Calgary Commuter Challenge

Canadians are getting good at going green! Employees from 1,636 workplaces in 159 cities and towns across Canada gave their cars some time off for the annual National Commuter Challenge during Canadian Environment Week last year and we’re gearing up to see numbers sore for this years event,  May 30 - June 5, 2010. The event continues to grow in popularity with 44,109 individuals logging on and tracking their commuter impacts last year, almost 12,500 more than the previous year.

Bike to Work Day - Friday, May 7!

Slow is the New Fast workshop

There's a workshop taking place on April 16th to look at new alternatives to managing traffic that will make the city more liveable for cyclists and pedestrians. A noted Dutch designer will lead the workshop at the Delta Bow Valley Hotel. If you've got the time, please consider attending. Maybe your community association will foot the bill to have you represent it. Check the PDFs for details.

There's also a preview session the evening before, at the Richmond School. If you can't take off time on the 16th, you may be able to get the gist of the ideas by attending the evening before.

Check the two attached posters for full details of these two welcome events.

If you do go, please post your learnings here.

New bike bridge at St. Patrick's Island

The winning design has been unveiled in the contest to replace the aging bridge across the south channel of the Bow River at the west end of St. Patrick's (Zoo) Island. You can read the story here.

Survey for female cyclists

The Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals (www.apbp.org) is interested in gathering input on transportation cycling issues. This particular survey is just for women and girls (sorry fellas). We're guessing that APBP is taking note of the fact that in many cities the bike-riding population on the streets is overwhelmingly male, and is interested in learning more about the reasons for that. You can find that survey here.
