New Dedicated Bike Lane in Calgary

As of this week, Calgary has another dedicated on-street bike lane for cyclists. This new lane runs north on 9A St. NW from memorial drive to 4th ave. You may recall that 9A is actually a one-way street travelling south. As such, this bike lane is a contraflow bike lane, in that it travels counter to the designated flow of traffic.

This marked and signed lane allows cyclists to safely travel north on street from the 9A bridge that runs underneath the CTrain tracks all the way to 4 Ave. N. without having to travel on 10th street or the pathway east of the CTrain tracks, which can often be busy.

(Also worth noting is that it is legal to cycle on the eastern [northbound] sidewalk on 10th street that travels up the hill. But only on this one particular stretch of sidewalk)
