Falconridge to the Jubilee Auditorium

I'm looking for suggestions on getting from Falconridge to the Jubilee. I'll probably be on my 10 speed so prefer pavement wherever possible.

Thanks.

8th is not fun

I tried the 8th Ave Bridge headed East yesterday. It was not fun. It's posted single file for cars and bikes, but the drivers just don't get it and will attempt to squeeze past you. Either take the lane or get over in the rough.

Here's another route that is a little longer, but I think it's better. It uses the ped bridge instead of 8th. I used to commute on 24th Ave and it was good. You could try 18th Ave instead but I'm not familiar with it. It also shows another route through the East side.

alternative to 8 Ave NE

8th Ave NE bike route has had some recent upgrades, and the bridge has fog lines to demarcate a bike "lane". But yeah, either you ride in that marked area on the side (and it may not yet be clear of gravel), or you bomb down the hill and take the whole lane. OR, you just ride on the sidewalk on the north side, which has now been designated a bikepath.

But since you're coming from the north, you can avoid that bridge altogether, and the ugly hill on its west side. Come south on whatever street you like, then get on the 25th Ave Northeast Regional Pathway and cross Deerfoot on the ped bridge, then take the pathway down to join the Nose Creek pathway. Just south of 16th Ave, there's a zigzaggy path up the hillside into Renfrew, and from there you can get to the 8th Ave bike route. Enjoy!

Falconridge to the Jubilee Auditorium -- Good Route ??

I start evening classes in a couple of weeks at the U (Social Sciences Bldg) and will be looking for a similar route from north of the airport.

Any comments or experiences on this route? I have ridden "...to the 25th Ave Northeast Regional Pathway etc." But then I always head N or S on the Nose Creek Pathway system.

I mapped out a couple of other routes, but would like to avoid Coronation Park, if possible. It is just too dangerous as I will likely want to be "motoring along." Work ends at 5 and class starts at 6:30.

The other route I mapped was from the "...zigzaggy path..." head north of the trailer park and wind my way to 20th Ave. Follow that to 19th W, turn N to 24th and then to the U? This seems dangerous especially during rush hour?

Any and all thoughts will be appreciated. Weather permitting I will take a test run this weekend.

Oh yeah, is it even worth considering leaving my bike at the U for night classes or will it be gone when class is out?

not sure what the foot traffic

is like at night these days but I wouldn't leave the bike near the "back doors" that lead into the social sciences basement. The main doors maybe or mac hall ? I know I locked my road bike up at the main entrance when I took summer session classes in the late 90's/2000.

20 Ave NW - works but not ideal

I was living on 21 Ave. around Centre St. a couple of years ago and rode 20 Ave. westbound regularly to 19 St to get to Foothills Hospital. The lane width is tight with the parked cars and the traffic tends to move fast - it's used as an alternative to 16 Ave for crosstown travel. It is doable but you need to be ready for people cutting close and/or getting angry with you for just being on the road.

You ruled out Confederation Park, so an alternative that is a bit friendlier (but more roundabout) than 20 Ave. is to go south from the trailer park/EMS station (on 8 St or 6 St NE) and then westbound on 12 Ave NE. Cut through SAIT, continue along the south side of North Hill mall (on the road or take the path south of the LRT tracks), head north to take the overpass over Crowchild at 21 St NW, and head up through Banff Trail to campus (a pathway runs by the Volleydome and swimming pools/arena if helpful).
