Calgary Ride to Work Day - April 11, 2008

Today I noticed the Bike To Work Day sign for April 11.

Last year, they were handing out goodies under the 10th st pedestrian bridge on the south side. I picked up a water bottle, patch kit, and a couple other things. I'm sure more details will come as I think a few bike shops and the city sponsor it. I didn't even have to stop! They hand it off to you like in a race...

Ride to work day

It would be awesome if they were out earlier to catch the riders that travel the pathways between 530 am and 6am.
Missed out on the stuff last year as I travel early.

Contact

The organizers might appreciate a volunteer at that time of the morning to open up one of the info stops. They can be reached at (403)269 -7300.

The freezing slush last year

The freezing slush last year was so inspiring that I took the coupon out of the give-away water bottle straight to cyclepath and bought another studded Nokian.

I also left for work late and detoured in and out of down town just to take part and "get counted"

Just one

I'm traveling from roughly MRC to the U of C and so none of the checkpoints were along my commuting route. That day I promised to arrive on campus near 8:00 for an interview with Shaw's channel 10. I usually get to work near 6:45 and hit the gym, so I had to use up[ the extra hour and a quarter. I left home half an hour late, rode downtown, and then back up to the University, I picked up a bottle at the 10th street/bow river check point on my way out of downtown.

Anyone know when and where

Anyone know when and where they'll be giving out stuff? I work in Chestermere so I know there won't be anything along my usual route, but I could take a quick ride down to the river in the morning just to be counted?

Bike to Work location

Last year the location was the south end of the 9A St SW pedestrian bridge underneath the LRT tracks. It was cold and rainy, so it was a good thing they had were able to tuck under the bridge.

Just one day?

Just one ride-to-work day? Last year I rode to work roughly 260 days (and 100 other days on top of that). If anyone tries to limit me to just riding to work on April 11th, there's gonna be trouble!

Mayor's note to all city staff

Here's the email that went out to all city staff today, promoting the Bike To Work day this Friday.

Looking for a fun way to get those steps into your day?

Get involved in Calgary's second annual Bike to Work Day! Set aside those car keys, grab your helmets, and hop on your bicycles to commute to work.

Mayor Dave Bronconnier proclaimed Friday, April 11, 2008 as Bike to Work Day. This annual event encourages Calgarians to improve their health and reduce pollution and traffic congestion by commuting to work by bicycle.

Anyone biking to work on Bike to Work Day can visit the following locations for free snacks, prizes, a quick tune up and a posture adjustment:

  • 4th Street and Elbow Drive, near Mission Safeway
  • The pathway on the south side of the Bow River at 10th Street S.W. (under the LRT Bridge)
  • The Prince’s Island pedestrian bridge
  • 8th Street and 10th Avenue S.W., near Mountain Equipment Coop
  • The pathway on the south side of the Bow River, at MacLeod Trail S.E. (across from Harry Hays Bldg.)

For more information check out the official Bike to Work Day website.

That was a great treat this

That was a great treat this morning, to have so many volunteers out and giving goods to the passing cyclists. Thanks so much to anyone that was involved! What a great way to promote biking.

Thanks, Joel.

Practice What You Preach

Early last week I telephoned the Mayor's office to see if Bronco Dave wanted an escort on his ride to work last Friday. Cycling on Macleod Trail from points south of Fish Creek can be a little harrowing and one tends, at times, to feel unsafe. Despite the proclamation extolling city staff to cycle to work I got a return phone call from a humourless assistant in the mayor's office saying the Mayor would be in a meeting with the media first thing Friday morning and therefore could not cycle to work. I guess the media conference was not about 'Bike to Work' Day.
