Since I beat pinkrobe to it, I guess I will just start the weekly thread this morning.
River pathways through Bowmont and Baker Park were nasty with snow-covered black ice this morning. Almost lost it a couple of times, but my studs saved me. I ended up bailing off the bike paths at Silver Crest Dr and took the roads to work instead. Looked like two other bikers had the same idea based on their tracks. By the imprints in the snow, it looks like someone took a spill on the steep hill going down to the railway tracks where the construction is going on. Ouch! Let's hope this weather passes soon...

If the ride this morning had been mid November and our first snow of the year I would have tho't "wow, so pretty" but seeing as it's been a long winter and we had the pleasure of dry pavement for a few days, this morning was discouraging. Nevertheless, did it, made it, will do it again tonight and tomorrow morning....sigh. No issues except for the dude who blew past me this morning when I was stopped at a STOP sign, then proceeded to blow thru' a red light. I guess he must have one of those special permits.

The pathways from the NW and along the river are pretty much snow covered as of 7:30am. It's a few inches deep so it's rideable but a bit grabby on the steering in places. The south side pathway from Crowchild to Downtown is cleared but the lack of snow has exposed the underlying ice. I expect they'll continue clearing west this morning. Use caution if you are reading this before heading out.

McKnight Blvd Single Track - a bit dicey
Submitted by dmodderman on
Had to walk my bike along the narrow ridge between the airport fence and slope down to McKnight Blvd (north side), between Deerfoot & Barlow Trail. Commute took about 40% longer than if no snow (Huntington Hills to Barlow/McKnight area) without studded tires. Another few cm's of snow and this route would not be passable without a lot of walking the bike.

What alternate routes / detours exist for traveling between 32nd Ave and 16th Ave on the Nose Creek pathway, now that it is closed? I read on the city's website that there is a detour on the east side of Nose Creek. The option might be to take 6th street. Any recommendations, gotchas, etc.?

The detour is in great shape and maybe adds 500m to the trip. If your heading North, at 16th ave cross the train tracks travel around the east side of the golf course parallel to deerfoot (if it is rush hour you will be traveling faster than the cars and be going up hill). At 32 ave follow the path West again and reneter the Nose creek path proper at the Rockyview office. Be warned that the temporary path past the power substation is pretty beat up right now and is quite bumpy.

Bow river in great shape

I really am spoiled on my ride. The bow river path (west of DT) is in great shape as always, and makes a nice quiet second half of my ride after dealing with all the traffic and salt on Bowness Rd.
Apart from one idiotic truck driver, and a similarly stupid bus driver, this winter has been a more friendly one on Bowness Rd. I suspect that overall drivers are getting more used to seeing me on the road, or I might be becoming a better cyclist. Either way it was less stressful this year than last. Hopefully the trend continues.

Heavy "pea soup" fog on top of Nosehill... got nicely soaked down... then coming down Home Road the soaked jacket/pants turned to frozen crispy. Then once I hit the parkade EVERYTHING melted simultaneously - it was like standing under a mini-shower from my helmet defrosting.
A few sketchy icy bits along the 20km commute and a few motorists a little uncertain how to share the road - ranging from 6" passing space to about 1.5lanes over, stalking/tailgating, playing hopscotch with a CT bus, a bike-path wheelsucker (I ignored them) and yet again having my pick of bike stalls in the cage (only 2 of us using it the last few months).

Even Studs go Down!
Submitted by bclark on
I should've known, when the guy ahead of me was walking...or more shuffling down the pathway hill under the 10th street bridge. Hey, why slow down too much though? After all, I still have the studs on. Well, that wet sheen on the pathway definitely wasn't liquid water as I quickly found out when my back wheel broke traction. Whamo!
Okay, I'm exaggerating a bit, the guy ahead of me shuffling did give me enough of a clue to slow down...I just misjudged how much speed I needed to scrub. I almost held it together but my back wheel did start slipping out and, once it was out far enough, my balance was thrown so that I wasn't weighting the back end and it slid out. The studs did grip enough so that my fall was more a slow motion splay though. Anyway, aside from bashing my knee a bit I was pretty much unscathed and able to get back on and ride down the hill...slowly. I've still got hte full studded "Ice Spike" on the front and it kept my front end upright. After that it was only a matter of keeping the back end straight!
Thanks to the fellow cyclist for asking if I was okay after my spill though!

My ride, actually more of a prolonged slide, down Tuscany Hill pathway sure woke me up this morning. Even the paths that looked dry were slick and covered in ice. Even with studs that was my most scary ride of the year. After I got down, I hopped on the roads for the rest of the ride to work and all was good. When I did finally get to work, I had to crack about one-quarter inch of ice off my jacket to unzip it though! LOL

I almost lost my rear wheel about 10 times, but surprisingly I only saw one accident. Some poor cyclists took the corner from the Edworthy park bridge onto the bow river MUP a little too fast and went sliding across the pathway. He popped back up and said he was fine.
I did hear several emergency sirens though, and so did everyone else at work on their commutes.

Studded tires that is... Great ride this morning, studded tires and reduced speed kept me upright but I almost fell over a couple of times when stopping at red lights and putting my foot down. Studs are the best
Submitted by dailybiker on
Met a rider this morning warning me about the icy conditions. With regard to traction, I did not even notice the ice on the paths today. My > 300 studs per tire (2 new ones installed 3 weeks ago) work wonders. The studs are noisy and slow, but when you don't even notice the ice from freezing rain, I would say that they are certainly effective. Can't say the same for my glasses, the ice totally covered the lens.

I don't mind the bus, in fact thinking I might use it more next winter, specifically during those big snow events. I'm faster than a bus on any day that doesn't involve massive headwinds, and on a big snow day I'm faster than all the cars too.
This is due to excellent snow clearing on the Bow river mup. I ride Bowness Rd in the traffic lane until Shapanappi, and on a heavy snow day this is where the parking lot for downtown starts. After that I'm still doing about 20-25 while the cars are lucky to do 10.

Although half my route is on the wonderful MUP, the second half is on city streets. And on bad snow days I'll often opt for back roads with no cars rather than risk a spill on a main road where the car behind me might not be able to avoid running me over.
On these days I have about 5 km of pretty miserable bike riding on occasion. Icy death, snow drifts, unshoveled sidewalks when the road becomes unridable.
But even in these circumstances, I could never imagine wanting to be on the bus. But again, the difference maker for me is the other half of ride is always pleasand, peaceful, quiet, and plowed. It makes up for all the hard bits.

Colder than normal spring predicted by Environment Canada
By Jordan Chittley | Daily Brew – Wed, 23 Mar, 2011 1:01 PM EDT
Even though spring has officially arrived and Canadians may occasionally get a small taste of warmth, it's going to be a while before you can put away the parkas.
"Forget what the calendar says, this is Canada," says Environment Canada climatologist David Phillips. "Ten per cent of snowfall happens in spring."
Canada is the snowiest country in the world, the second coldest country and winter is the longest season.
"Last year we had the earliest and warmest spring on record," says Phillips. "It was a gift."
By the end of a nice spring, Canadians believe it's the norm and only remember the last year. However, not only does it usually snow in April, but a third of the time it snows in May. That's more of what we can expect for this spring, he says.
Phillips predicts a colder than normal April for everywhere west of the Ottawa Valley. That will include more snow and April showers. East of the Ottawa Valley he's predicting normal conditions. He says it's much of the same for May and June with it to be colder than normal in the West and normal in the East.
As for Atlantic Canada, which has been battered by storms almost every week during the fall and winter, Phillips says spring will arrive there last.
"More than a quarter of Moncton's snow comes in the spring," says Phillips. Water still has ice in it and therefore prevents the Atlantic provinces from warming up faster.
But there's some good news. Even though it's difficult to predict what summer will be like this far away, Phillips says the models show a warmer than normal summer.
"We feel we are owed warmer weather, but nature takes its sweet time," he says. While we may not be able to sit on a patio in shorts tomorrow, "everyday it becomes more difficult for winter to return."
"Spring is like the buffet of weather types, everything can happen," says Phillips. "But I'm not going to write the obituary on winter just yet."
