I rode to Bragg Creek and back today. The shoulders of Glenmore/Hwy 8 are coated in gravel and who-knows-what up until you reach the city limits. As soon as you pass that threshold, it's like a magic wand has erased all the gravel and debris from the shoulder, all the way to Bragg Creek. There are one or two spots by the dirt roads where there's a little bit, but it's pretty smooth otherwise. Hopefully the other road routes just outside of Calgary have been swept as well.
I talked to a Conservation Officer who works out of the Elbow station, and he said that the shoulder is probably swept all the way out to the winter gate on Hwy 66!

Hwy 1A

I've been getting in as much road time as the weather will allow and the out of town routes are generally looking good.
The only crap spot I would try to avoid is the 1A just East of Cochrane, the construction there spills onto the shoulder and I found myself having to use the traffic lane. Once you get to Woodland Road it's all good again.
TWP 262

One could use Township 262 instead, which is much nicer, fresh pavement and only slightly longer/hillier.
At the top of the Gleneagles climb, go strait and continue north for 1 mile (until you can't) and turn right on TWP 262). You can connect to Lochend or Bearspaw roads (but not Woodland) from 262.

I prefer and recommend 262.
Highway 66

Highway 66 is clear until the end of the pavement (second-hand knowledge). The road is still closed to traffic, too, I believe.
