Rear wheel making a new sound

Hey peeps!

Just noticed the last few days that there's a new sound coming from my rear wheel. Kind of a cross between a tick and a clank (metallic) sound. Almost sound like the spokes rubbing against something, but I know they're not.

Yesterday on the way home I figured out exactly how to make the sound happen. If I'm leaning into a left hand turn, it happens. Or if I lean the bike to the left, so the weight is on that side.. it happens. If I lean the bike to the right, or am making a right hand turn, it doesn't happen. And when I'm riding straight and level, it normally doesn't happen.

I'm thinking something broke - or is in the process of breaking - in the hub? Maybe a bearing? Any ideas?

Still seems to ride fine other than the sounds... but I can't shake the thought of my wheel busting off when i'm doing 50km/h downhill somewhere..

Sounds are hard

Check the spoke tension around the wheel. Make sure there is no play in the rear wheel when your skewer is properly engaged (a little play without the skewer engaged is expected and desirable). Inspect the entire wheel for damage and be thorough by removing the tire and rim tape so you can see everything.

Even if you can reproduce a sound it can be hard to isolate the cause. You could be sure the sound is coming from your rear wheel by swapping in a replacement and seeing if the noise goes away.
