How Was Your Ride Today? Week of Aug. 2

Yawn... How was your ride today? Looks to be another great week to be outside on your ride!

Today I decided to go into

Today I decided to go into the office late (since I'm technically on vacation) It was great riding to work in the sunshine instead of my usual 05:00 darkness. Absolutely no traffic, and not very many bikes. Lots of people off work this week I guess that actually got to stay away from work.

it was quiet

I was on the path at 6 A.M. and it was quiet (only saw 1 cyclist and a couple of joggers, at least until downtown and then it picked up).
Standing on my balcony watching the path at around 5 and noticed how dark it is. Sun doesn't rise until 6 so I guess it makes sense - I am just in denial ;-)
Also noticed how there are some people that don't realize that with the dark comes the requirement for lights, especially when riding in dark areas like Point McKay. Oh well, when they run into their first "ninja" jogger, they'll learn.

distracted rider

So I was riding home yesterday on the pathway by the old Science Center and I saw a guy who was riding with no hands and instead, it looked like he was playing with his smartphone/iPod.

I have been seeing alot about the new Distracted Driver laws that are coming in this September and was wondering if the rules also apply to cyclists? Could this guy have been pulled over by the cops and given a ticket based on the new laws or do the current city bylaws cover this kind of stuff?

The DD Legislation

I think it is good legislation overall and will make the roads much safer.

From the Fact Sheet below, I pulled the following quote: "
Applies to all vehicles as defined by the Traffic Safety Act, including bicycles" IANAL, but I believe it applies just on roads as the MUP's probably aren't considered under the TSA. But, not to mention that the City could add something to the bylaws if they wanted to.

As for practicality, I have no desire to talk or text on my phone, surf the web or play pokerstars.net while I am commuting!

interesting

So do they have mounting device for smartphones on bikes? This app would be quite useful on those new rides (at least, better than fighting with those fold-up maps).
Just sent a message to them asking if the app is for the iOS only or if they are also making an Android version.

It never rains it Pours + PayIt Forward!

Welcome to my life:

Tuesday my little bikes bearings were completely shot & had to turn around & go back home, hoping that I would make it.

Wednesday I was in the same area & my other bike decided to have a flat tire, & I, without a patch kit or tube, couldn't go anywhere or fill up & didn't care to take 2-3 hours of walking back home pushing this bike with a flat.

I was on the phone to someone, & a nice man spotted me $25 for a cab. & requested that I pay it forward. (Oh how I LOVE payitforward!)

I went to MEC dropped off both bikes. Learned how to replace a tube, & about watching for what kind of piercing was made ect.

I went on a short ride up to Maxbell yesterday with the repaired tire. Out in the country this morning we're hauling (into truck) the bike & it's FLAT...AGAIN.... all I wanna do is ride, there is obviously something wrong with this tire, something's pinching. IDK I read something online about the Leggenda Conino Lamborghini always having flats........... sigh I NEVER once in 8 months have gotten a flat with my other little bike. It's in the shop till Monday.

Commuter tires are your best

Commuter tires are your best choice for resistance to flats from the stuff that’s on the ground when you’re an urban rider. Look for tires that have a puncture resistant layer in them. My experience is that plain old mountain bike tires w/o a puncture resistant layer flat more often since they’re not designed to deal with broken glass and other urban detritus/crud.

seatpost

what size do you need? i pulled a 27.2mm on my breezer, upgraded to thomson. if you guys can use it, feel free to take it for free.

forgot to mention

I had to pull off the path this morning for a few minutes and before I could get back on I had to wait for a break in bike traffic, counted 22 cyclists going past me. This was at approx 7:30, just after crossing the Crowchild bridge north to south side, eastbound

wow

Glad I don't have to ride during "rush hour". At 6 A.M., I am lucky to see more than a handful of other cyclists. Usually makes for a peaceful ride although I had an interesting moment this morning when I encountered 2 very discourteous female joggers.
They were taking up 3/4 of the path and were letting their dog run off-leash on the path. I gave them a dirty look as I passed (but did not say a word) and they started beaking off. No matter what time of day it is, you can always encounter some strange people.
Also, as I was going through the wooded area just east of Edworthy, I saw some large, wet tracks on the path. They were fairly large (didn't look like a dog print) but closely spaced - I am thinking a beaver, which are common in the area and has the webbed feet and short legs. Just seems strange because I saw them on and off the path for several hundred meters. Maybe more than one?

It's all done.

As of Tuesday, August 2nd there are new bike lane markings painted on the west side of 52nd from Home Road to Bowness Road. It's pretty good, there are about 10 new signs, the lane markings are double lines, spaced a jersey-barrier width apart. The lanes clearly indicate 2-way bike traffic. There are now signs at every driveway entrance along 52nd to let oncoming drivers know that they're driving beside a bike lane. The paint is that super-reflective stuff that Roads uses, so that's top drawer as well. The only thing that I don't like is that there isn't a jersey barrier or anything right where the corner is by the Marinara Church. Cars approaching you (if you're riding up the hill) tend to take that corner rather wide and encroach into the bike lane. I'd way rather see the cars encroach into a concrete barrier instead of a cyclist as they go around that corner. :)

All in all, it's a really good job from the folks in Transportation.

Lots of bugs tonight

Tonight I came home with at least 1,000 gnats stuck in the sweat/sunscreen on my arms and legs. My wife wouldn't let me in the house. Had to hose off first. =)

Good ride other than that.

Thursday rode 100km with a friend ... Crashed once (front wheel slid off the sand/gravel coming out of the bollards on the path), flatted twice. Then he crashed when the handlepost simply broke off on his 7 year old Dahon folder... bummer.
