How is your ride this week, Dec.5 to Dec.9?

Into December we go....Smile

I hope I have more deliveries this week! Some of you may know, I currently deliver pizza by bike! =)

Stay Safe out there

Forums:

wanted to but...

There was too much snow for my liking in my neigbourhood (cougar ridge). Though I did drive part of my bike route and it looked passable. It would not have been an enjoyable ride. And I like my morning commute to be an enjoyable ride not a near death experience. Don't you? Here's what I noticed: 45st s.w was clear with the occasional snow berm going into the roadway from sidewalk snow shovelling. I'm not sure about the pathway coming down from coach hill, but I have my doubts it would have been cleared. Gven past experience with that section, it usually takes a day or longer for it to be cleared. I'll most likely ride tomorrow, but "for those about to rock, I salute you."

Snow...lots of it!

Aside from the residential streets that were covered in rutted snow, the commute in from Glenbrook down 26 Avenue was faily good west of the bridge over Crowchild and then it just went downhill from there, until Mount Royal, where every street was acctually plowed (26 Avenue is a priority 1 route, along with being a designated 'Snow Route' but it hasn't been plowed yet and there are still cars parked on the side).

It was a great day to brush up my snow riding skills!

Mostly packed snow

The MUP from Shouldice to 10 St. was mostly packed snow, with some bits of bare and dry and the odd glassy bit of ice. I suspect there's more ice hiding under the snow, so beware as things develop through the day, things could get worse instead of better.

As noted last week, there's a berm building up that makes moving from the MUP at the top of Bowmont park onto the top of Home Rd. tricky. If you come through here, beware, the situation is getting more challenging.

I managed to keep the speed nicely up from Edworthy along past Point Mackay and Parkdale, but did find that the snow conditions kept things feeling a little squirelly. More ninja dog walkers noted this morning than I usually see (or perhaps fail to see?!?)

If you're staying on the North side of the river and going under Crowchild Tr. (and don't ride studded tires) beware of some hazardous ice patches. They are on a section where you can pick a nice straight line before going over the ice, so you should be able to navigate it safely (as I did), but stay relaxed or you may not keep the wheels under you.

Maybe the mild temperatures predicted for the next couple of days will help clear up the situation...or maybe it will just get things nice and wet before it gets cold and ices up.

Some of my route is the same

Some of my route is the same as yours - I chose to sidewalk surf in my neighborhood (Parkdale) until I got to the MUP, crossed over at Crowchild and rode the south side, it was awesome, almost completely clear. Once downtown I was pleasantly surprised to find not a lot of brown snow and my route (8th Ave) was in good condition. My daily "worry" is the ramp to cross the river at Crowchild - this morning it was in good shape, we'll see what the sunshine does to it today.

Nice clear ride

My route (Bowness Rd to Bow river path) was basically an easy ride today, except for the stretch from my alley way to Bowness Rd. This 50 foot length of slightly uphill roadway ending at a 4 way stop, covered in compacted but breaking snow proved too much for me. I went down, and some of my pride went with it. I wasn't happy about the goofball driving the othe way who thought it would be helpful to honk at me as I stood up and dusted off the snow.

At least it was a soft landing though. I also made the mistake of taking my alternate route rather than wait for a red light. This took me off of Bowness Rd and into a snowy personal hell of poor road conditions which chased me to the sidewalk, and I had to wait for  train to pass :) . I think Karma was trying to tell me something today.

Gold Stars for the City

They plowed the MUP in Bowmont Park some time on the weekend (and, of course, Edworthy to downtown) so the commute in was great.  About 50% bare, 50% compacted snow.  JUST WATCH OUT FOR A LITTLE BIT O' ICE on the ramp that goes up to the pedestrian bridge under Crowchild on the west side of Crowchild on the north side of the river.  Same place as every year.....

As I blew by the cars "parked" on the fifth ave. connector at 30+km/hr I thought to myself "My toes may be a little colder than yours, but I'm definetely going to beat you into work!"

tough work today

1)WID path - max bell to 17th ave SE - cleared

2)17th bridge to bow river bridge - not cleared, some high snow drift. Ended up walking most of it, 5km/h, worst part of the trip

3)bow rive bridge to bird sanctuary - cleared

4)bird sanctuary to bonneybrook bridge - not cleared, uncompacted snow and lots of footprints made for slow tricky riding. Tough riding but at least i did not have to walk it

5)bonneybrook bridge to milligan dr se - cleared

6)lynnwood path - not cleared, hard packed foot prints gave my arms a workout.

good workout, more than what I bargained for. I think 5cm of snow will be my limit for riding if the paths are not plowed.

no problem, hopefully the info was useful

Ended up driving today on 17th ave and as far as I can see.

17th ave - WID bridge to bow river bridge - all cleared. Unfortunately this was not cleared last night on my journey home so somebody worked hard last night or early this morning.

Thanks oggie for the update on the pathway. The short section between alyth rail bridge to bonneybrook bridge now cleared as well.

The snow clearing so far this winter has been really quick. Thank you once again city of calgary. 1 full working day before the path I was using was cleared.

Looks like I don't have an excuse for not riding tomorrow.

Good to Know!

Nice having options, I hate riding up silversprings blvd & up Nose Hill when theres snow&slush on the road, and having to deal with cars as they pass you at 60km/hr.

Thank You!

Silvercrest Drive Parking

There is also a lot of parking along Silvercrest Drive (west end near path), just in case you ever go to SS Blvd and none there.  But you have to ride through 'Waterfall Valley' if you start there (mostly an issue in the spring).  Wink

The priviliged few

After reading everybody else's horror stories, i have to admit living in Silver Springs is pretty cushy.  I just wrote another post here mentioning how my bike hardly even gets dirty in the winter, but the fact is I don't have to ride in the slop very much.

Oh well, my taxes are going up again if that makes the rest of you feel any better.Wink

Lucky fella...

I'm up Sarcee from you in Citadel and getting out of there is a disaster.  In fact over the last 3-4 winters the city has been doing less and less clearing and what they have been doing has come slower and slower.  At times it's a "connect the dots" to link safe blocks together.  I've consistently found that south of Crowchild the bike commuting is substantially easier although it sounds like Tuscany is also lagging behind w/ reasonable & safe winter cycling routes.

I may have to very seriously consider driving down to Silver Springs and going from there.  I wonder what the safety is like for vehicles there?  (being ~1block from the Fuzz Central probably isn't much of a deterrent for some).

Thanks gyro

I would bet that it is all plowed, if your stretch has been done.  They almost always do the whole stretch west of Home Road on the same day. Thanks for letting me know!

It was really nice coming home tonight

I'd say it'snow 75% to 85% bare after some wind and sun helped the remaining snow and ice sublime off.

WARNING FOR UNDER THE 14th STREET BRIDGE!  (South Side of River) - the weird little bit of water has dripped there again and iced the path up, so BE CAREFUL THERE!

311 call a couple weeks back

I placed a call to 311 to ask them to fix the burnt out light for the 14th Street underpass.  It had been out for several months by the time I called (kept forgetting once I got to work!).  I even mentioned that it'd be nice to have it working again especially with the colder temps and the ice that always builds up under there so you have a chance to see it and then avoid it.  I've been off the bike due to a knee issue the past few weeks so not sure if the light was ever fixed.

Missed this altogether!

Thanks Julie.  Not sure how I missed your post - it never showed as "new" so I completely missed it.

Been back riding this week and boy does it feel good to be at it again.   Knee is still sensitive but I couldn't stand relying on transit or driving anymore!

Just this morning I requested a followup to my 311 phone call to have that light fixed.  I'll post when I hear something back.

Splat zone

with an incredible amount of snow still on our roadway (bus route that is still un-plowed) there was no way I was taking on the nastiness.  Even the vehicle tracks weren't down to pavement this morning and instead were several inches of squishy squirmy gross stuff that my vehicle even had issues with.  My undrifted sidewalk had 20cm and drifts much deeper.  By comparison it's truly astounding how little snow there is downtown.

My kids should have fun this evening... I piled all the deck snow up and build a gradual toboggan ramp down from our deck onto the lawn.  They were busy inside last night when I did this so I just had to take a few runs myself to pack down the snow.

Awful!

Just an awful ride in today.  I ended up doing a lot of walking this morning and was quite late for work because of it!  What a difference having plowed paths make, I hope they're all been done before the trek home.

...and still I prefer it to driving, how did that happen?

South Calgary (Bankview) SW To Downtown

As of this morning

26th Avenue SW snow route-not yet cleared

14th Street-Cleared

Prospect Avenue-Cleared, as usual, not a designated snow route but I'm not complaining.

8th Street SW-Cleared, but sketchy in spots

The extra phat mud guard on my front fender means absolutely no splatter on my shoes, legs or pannier.  Thanks @bikebike @brodiebikes!!!

10th Avenue-Cleared

Overall, a good ride, however the parking ban on 26th Avenue was being largely ignored.  No doubt many warnings were handed out there.

Mixed Bag

It was a total mixed bag today. We were surfing the brownsnow on 25th Ave. SW, riding pow on Prospect and getting the CaCl exfoliation on 8 St. all the way into downtown.

Things were a bit drier on the way home, but there was still plenty of brownsnow to deal with.  I also dislike how 25th is plowed 1.3 lanes wide, which, while better than a kick in the ass, still means riding up hill just right of the middle of the road.

My knees are killing me. It's a race to see which works faster, Advil or Zinfandel...

said thanks

Saw one of the SW pathway plow guys and had a good chat with him mentioning that we appreciate his hard work and we would be up th creek without it. He really appreciated the thanks and the fact that we recognize his hard work and the 24 hours he spend plowing the pathway from glenmore reservoir to fort calgary.

Remember to say thanks when you do see them.

I agree!

I was thinking of getting a couple of coffee gift cards to pass out if I ever come across them on my paths.  I definitely want them to feel appreciated!

That's a good idea!!!

Will do the same.

I've also thought about giving the Canadian Forces guys & girls who are out "doing their march/hike" something as well, so now I'll be ready with gifts.

BEATUIFUL weather this

BEATUIFUL weather this morning, but terrible roads.  Squishy snow as far as the eye can see.  Spent my fair share of time on the sidewalk, but managed to keep the rubber side down!

A call out to my Southern brothers and sisters!!  Anybody have a really good winter route form let’s say the Southlandish area?  My normal route takes me from the Southland C-train station (drive in from Okotoks)

-          Haddon Road (plowed)

-          Heritage Drive (plowed)

-          5th Street (YUCKY SLUSHY MESS)

-          5th Street from Glenmore to 58th (plowed)

-          5th street winding down to Stanley park (SLUSHY MESS, BROWN SNOW GALORE)

-          Elbow River pathway (plowed)

-          Misc. Downtown roads (plowed)

The starting point is not so important since I drive in anyway.  I just like the option of taking transit home if I so desire (never have).

ANY THOUGHTS OR IDEAS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!

Southland Park

One option is to park at Southland (Dog) Park and take the path along the Bow river to downtown. Parks has been pretty good this winter about plowing the path within a couple of days and there is only one hill in each direction. It is not as direct as your present route but you don't have to worry about brown snow, etc. I don't think there is any transit service to the area. Another option, which is next to a bus stop, is to park in the small lot under Glenmore Trail at the east end of Heritage Drive and follow the path along the Bow. Access to this lot via car during rush hour can be a little tricky.

Thanks Oggie

I will give that a whirl.  My first winter, and the side streets that normally keep me safe in the non-snow months become a REAL detrement in the winter.  Like you said, not as direct, but a hell of a lot prettier I bet.

Stiil don't understand why the city wouldn't have put a bike lane on Elbow when they spent 6 zillion dollars on it.

Huntington Hills to Glenmore/Macleod

Decent ride; glad it was a crosswind and not a full headwind.

  1. MUP between Huntington Hills and Beddington - not plowed (used Beddington Trail)
  2. MUP from bus trap at Golden Acres to Zoo - plowed
  3. MUP along Georges Island - not plowed - used road across St George's Bridge
  4. MUP from bridge to Elbow Pathway - plowed
  5.  MUP along Elbow River thru Stampede - plowed
  6. MUP to Stanley Park - plowed
  7. 5th Street -  heavy slush in less used areas; bare car track in center lane near 58 Avenue

Vast Improvement

The ride in from Glenbrook was so much better today. My side street (43 Street) was even plowed (had a lot of fun maneuvering that yesterday - don't know why I didn't just use 45 Street but I like a challenge I guess). 26 Avenue SW was plowed sometime yesterday, but on my ride home yesterday I did find that along most of the route the snow was just plowed into the bike lane so I did find myself having to veer into the traffic lane quite often. Thankfully it was nice out this morning (9 degrees) and most of this has melted. Prospect Avenue was clear, but the hill down 9 Street, south of 17th Avenue was tricky as is was soft, uneven snow and it was dark so I couldn't even see anything so I had to use my feet to balance! 8 Street would probably be the way to go at this part of my trip when it snows....

Warm!

Overdressed this morning. Depending on the weather source, the weather was apparently somewhere between -1 and +7 on my route.  I dressed for the low end, but it felt like +10!

The pathways out of Tuscany were in fantastic shape today.  Those pathway crews are really doing a great job this year!  A pleasant surprise I encountered was a cleared path down Silver Springs Gate NW to the bus trap in Varsity (although the bay on the other side was a sloppy mess that I had to walk part-way through). Overall a great ride this morning, though.

Signal Hill --> Downtown Conditions

In case anyone here takes some of the same route as me here is an update from this morning:

  • Simcoe Blvd/Christie Park Hill/Lower part of Strathcona Dr  - roads are clear with the usual wet salt spray.  The only exception to this is the bus trap/sidewalk that connects 58 St and  Costello Blvd - lots of foot traffic in the snow.
  • Sarcee/Bow - Path down from Strathcona in good shape and the path down to Edworthy Rd in good shape too but the transition from the path to the road has a bit of mashed potatoes.
  • Spruce Dr - clear and wet, fast
  • Quarry Trail - Very mushy and lots of different tracks and ruts which make your bike jump and swerve all over like  a drunken sailor (esp with my lack of technical prowess).  I almost lost it a couple times up on top, though the bottom half was better.  I think I'll use the paved path up to 26th or Edworthy for a while until it freezes up and smooths-up again.  Once I pick up my winter bike from the shop with my studded tires I may have better traction who knows.
  • S Bow Path/2nd Ave/3rd Ave - nice

T'is the season!

I already have tomorrow planned. Our office is having a pre Christmas cocktail party right afterwork - so I will "hoof" it in the morning and use a taxi chit for the homeward bound trip. Great timing to avoid that nasty (foreacasted) cold and potentially icy trip tomorrow.

Cant win for tryin

Yesterday I rode legally on the road and was squeezed into the curb at the light at 17th ave sw and richmond road by an asshole in a big white truck. He saw me and basically chopped me when the light turned green. Then today I rode illegally on the sidewalk in same location and had a pedestrian purposefully block my way and tell me to dismount. I even tried to tell him why i was on the sidewalk (my son was onboard) but he just ignorned me.

Assholes.

For the most part, when I'm

For the most part, when I'm on the sidewalk with the kiddie trailer attached I have gotten a lot of positive reactions from pedestrians. They smile at the kids and make room for us to go by if they can.

Sucks to hear that someone would be that much of an idiot. Oh well.

Idiot driver

Here is a tale of the dumbest thing I've seen a car do recently.

My ride home involves crossing 6th Ave SW on northbound 11th St to hook up with the bike path. 11th has three northbound lanes, the left lane turns left onto 6th, the center lane can either turn or go straight on, and the right lane is a go straight only lane.

Since 11th is blocked right now due to lrt construction, the only car traffic on this road comes from the two parking lots connected to the alley way, so basically one or two cars per green light.

The other night I arrive there with no cars around, and take a position in the center lane so I can proceed straight and connect to the bike path. An SUV pulls up, turns on his left signal light, and then proceeds to pull up to my right in the straight through lane.

This looks fishy to me, so I get him to roll down his window and ask him if he's turning left, after putting down whatever device he was texting on, he says yes. I proceed to explain to him that he can't do that, that he'll hit me, and he should back up (in the empty road) and use one of the two turning lanes.

He looks blankly at me for a minute, and then says that he'll let me go first, and then throws in "You shouldn't be out here on your bike.". I couldn't believe it. Here he is not paying attention, and blatantly breaking two laws (texting and an illegal turn) and he's trying to lecture me. I don't think he had any understanding of what he was doing wrong.

          Love these guys

I had a fun one the other night too - I'm EB on 20 Ave NW, at 14 St and in the left lane, first at the intersection (right hand lane is usually right turns) waiting to proceed straight through. A Jetta pulls up beside me and stops, obviously trying to beat me through the intersection on the right and cut me off. Light turns green, I go (studded tires away!) and the Jetta guns it, spins his wheels long enough that he gets stuck behind a parked car on the other side while the line of traffic that built up behind me on the red light and I go flying by. Karma can be a bitch sometimes...  I was somewhat terrified he'd try to merge into me in the intersection, but fortunately he didn't try to squeeze me into oncoming traffic. Doesn't always pay to pass the cyclist...

          I'll add another "story"

WR and S&S - It must be the weather that is F%#&'n up these people's brains.I was coming down Home Road this morning and a silver BMW decides that as he passes me he will squeeze me into the pile of snow by the curb.  Who did something in his cornflakes?  Then he gets down to Bowness Road and then he parks right up against the curb so I couldn't pass, even though he was going straight through.  AHole!  So I hopped the curb and cut in front of him.  Just before the light turned green I left early and moved into the lane about a foot or so and the guy layed on his horn for about 5 seconds.  Then he turned into the Safeway parking lot and I seriously considered looping back around and spitting on his windshield or pissin' in his doorlocks while he went into whatever store he was going into, but then I decided he wasn't worth the effort.

There are so many haters out there....

          Sounds familiar

I work in engineering and construction, and as an industry we are very safety focussed. Because of that, we start every meeting with a safety moment to remind everyone that we need to be thinking of safety all the time. Basically someone picks a topic on being safer in day to day life and talks about it for a couple minutes.

A couple of weeks ago, a fellow pipes up that now that it is winter all the cyclists should get off the road lest they obstruct his commute to work. He honestly uttered the words that he would just hit a cyclist than risk his car swerving around them. The meeting kinda went downhill from there.

I took his comments to his supervisor, and was told "that's just the way he is, ignore him". So I basically now assume our corporate good words about safety are utter bullshit.

There are some seriously ignorant people out there.

          Gross

Sorry to hear, Sean.  I had a grumpy old man this morning block me going uphill on 29 St today asking for a cigarette lighter (full out, arms stretched out, stop like something's really important). This stretch is even marked as ped-bike share since it's the big uphill section there. I had to dismount because he stopped me in my tracks... Gave me a laugh and I moved on, but still a pain in the ass.

          New strategy 10 Ave SW

I had another go at westbound 10 Ave SW during rush hour - I'm a glutton for punishment. As ridiculous as it sounds, I sailed along the last stretch between 12 and 14 St by pulling into the empty vehicle lane, passing all the cars stopped in the bike lane, and merging back in where the line is dashed and cars are supposed to enter. The design of that stretch is defective enough that I'm not sure enforcement will have much effect. Maybe the new cycling planner(s) in transportation can tackle that one.

          FWIW

The 10th Avenue stuff wasn't designed by Transportation Planning, but by a different department (Traffic Optimization). Of course, they didn't talk to each other. Not an excuse for poor design, but it *is* at least a reason...

          more signage

I submitted a 311 request for more signage along the stretch from 11-14 St. SW - it might help if the lane designation is more clearly indicated through to the end at 14 St.

          Scraped when I rode it

I went up 52nd at around 5pm and the lane had been plowed. It wasn't down to asphalt but I had no problem getting through. Path from the corner and up along Home Road was essentially dry. Were you earlier?

          Yup

I was there just after noon.  I've been adjusting my hours to ride in the sunshine as much as possible.

icy spot south of new alyth bridge

Just south of alyth bridge, there was some ice under the light snow cover at the first turn. Some icy spots just under the bonneybrook bridge as well. I took my first real fall there and took it real slow after that on hills, turns and under bridges. I did not see anybody on the trail before the fall but a cpr truck was driving by just as it happened so he got some entertainment. I found a motorola cell phone busted up on the westbound lane of millican drive before the hil. Going to let it dry out a bit before checking if it works and return to owner.

Pumphouse Closed, 11St closed - Beltline to University

Since 11St SW is closed, I've been riding from Beltline (10 St/15Ave SW) to the university, via 11 Ave SW, across the tracks under the Bow trail bridge, past the pumphouse theatre which is usually a pretty good route, and snow-cleared (kudos). This morning there was a backhoe in the way and a construction site opened up, so there is no passing this point, and the snow was too deep to go through the park. Had to ride back down pumphouse road to detour around the construction. Otherwise the pathways were clear, not too cold and having a great time riding in the winter!
          -Ben

10 St. bike lane -- southbound

Yesterday (Tuesday), I was coming from a different direction (had to drop the car off at the garage) and so was on a route I rarely take. I came Southbound on Edmonton Tr. to 20 Ave. and turned East. Then to 10 St. and turned South. I arrived at the lights at 16th Ave. and found I had a rules-of-the-road dilemma:

          • My light was red. There was a bus on the extreme right. There was another cyclist stopped in the bike lane, to the left of the bus. I pulled even with the cyclist.
          • There's a sign that clearly says that cyclists are to go on the advance light, same as for transit.
          • The problem: The bus needs to move to the left, essentially crossing the imaginary bike lane through the intersection but, the cyclists are to the left of the bus.
          • In this case, what happened was as follows: I had drifted about a bike-length ahead of the other cyclist, because I was anticipating the light; on the advance light, the bus started up and moved (to my mind, quite agressively) to the left; since I was uncertain how to handle the situation, I followed the other cyclist's lead, who stayed put while the bus pulled out, but since I was ahead, I was uncomfortably close as the back end of the bus tracked across my path and I moved to the left to stay away from the back corner of the bus; we both headed across as soon as the bus was clear.
          • This didn't work well in the long run, partly because I felt I could have been across the bus's intended line more quickly than it was across mine. Also, it stopped at the first bus stop on the way down 10 St. and I had to hold up, since there wasn't a decent space in traffic to get around the bus, and then had the same thing happen at the next two stops. Had I gone ahead, we'd have been out of each other's way for the rest of the way down 10 St.

What are your opinions? How should this situation be handled by cyclists and transit drivers, respectively?

          Probably would have waited

From your description, I would have considered the bus to be the first vehicle in the lane (i.e. the bike lane...unless you mean the far right of the driving lane?) to the stop line. I would have stopped behind the bus and proceeded on the signal after the bus. From your description this would seem to be my safest option and would not inconvenience me. I would have no reason to assume that I had any rights to proceed ahead of the bus unless I could safely assume it was stopped for an extended period. Correct me if I'm reading the description wrong.

          Patience Grasshopper

Don't take this as a suggestion that it's always best to back-down, but sometimes life is a lot less stressful by understanding that yes you're in the right, but backing off instead of stewing about it for hours/days may be the right path.  Put another way... if proving you are correct can result in your personal injury (or to others), is it worth it?

That said if someone is blatently being an @$$, choose the right time and a place to return the favor.

I have no problem with backing down

I truly felt that I was in a situation for which I didn't have a set of rules that applied. Probably best for the cyclist would be to pull in front of the bus, on the right hand side, so that as we all start moving, the bus has room to move to the left, without the cyclists and the bus having to cross paths (the crossing having effectively taken place while the bus was stopped).

Having experienced this once, the next time I go into that situation, I'll have a little better understanding of the expectations of the bus driver and should be able to figure out the best place to be and the best time to proceed. In the meantime, I'll enjoy my regular commute on the MUP.

          First in, First out

If I got there before the bus, I would have gone first for sure (especially if one could have stopped "in front" of the bus). I agree it's a little ambiguous though.

For others: at the intersection itself, there is (from the right-hand curb) a bus stop, the bike lane, TWO through traffic lanes, a left-turn lane and then the northbound lanes. The two southbound lanes merge just after SAIT. So busses typically take their advance-blue thing and merge left two lanes as they drive through the intersection.

One solution would be to say "bikes use advance light when no busses present" but then we're way into over-the-top rules territory. Or just kill the bikes-allowed-to-use-advance sign. It takes a few times through such an intersection to even see how it works, at which time you can "just go for it" on the bus advance blue if there's no bus...don't worry, most motorists have no idea you're allowed to right now, so give you dirty looks anyway.

(p.s. as someone brought up before, how are those things activated? Do they even go on if there's no bus around -- I can't remember).

          I don't think there's a bike

I don't think there's a bike lane next to the bus stop. Did they change it?  South across 16 AveThe pic on the left was taken when they put it in back in October. There's just a big bike/bus lane.  The "bikes proceed on |" sign is there so bikes don't hold up the bus that's waiting to go behind them.  The advance signal is activated by the bus operator, so it's never on when there are no buses. It does go in both directions, though, so you might get it northbound if there's a bus going southbound.

My advice: don't pass the bus unless it's stopped for passengers, and get in front of the bus if you do. Don't wait to the left.

          Was it the #5?

I've had some problems with the #5 Bus on S-bound 10th.  So much so that I actually complained to the City (and I'm not actually a complaining-type).

The bus should see the cyclist and know the rules.

In my case, I was WALKING my bike across the pedestrain lights by SAIT and the bus continued to move through the intersection (even though he could easily have stopped and should have).  The driver was staring at me (I guess to see if he hit me), and pulled into the right bus stop right after the pedestrian signal.

What's the problem?  Well... he didn't hit me, but could have.  I'm paranoid enough to assume everyone is trying to kill me at all times.

The bigger problem is that his right-side is the bike lane.  As he was staring at ME on the LEFT - he did NO shoulder check on the RIGHT and would have creamed any cyclist that may have been unfortunate to have been riding South.  Yipes!

          Report to CPS

Failing to yield to a pedestrian and entering a crosswalk when pedestrians are present are fairly serious traffic offences.  Given what you have said, it sounds like this is a very dangerous driver and you may wish to consider reporting him to the Calgary Police Service if this was a recent incident.  You will need a description of the bus and driver (route and time are not likely sufficient). You can phone in your report to the non-emergency line at 403-266-1234 and ask to report a dangerous bus driver.

          Bike lane not necessary

I've had buses cut me off to pull over at a stop on Bowness Rd. In this case the bus is behind me going under a railroad overpass. I take the lane so the buses see me just fine, I then take the right lane just past the railline where Bowness Rd goes from 1 to 2 lanes and every once in a while I get a bus trying to overtake me only to stop 50 feet further on.

There is no way any bus can safely overtake me in this distance so the end result is always an illegal lane change that threatens my life if I don't stop.

When this happens, I have reported it to City transit. I don't know what action has been taken after that.

For the most part though, I find transit drivers in Calgary to be mostly accomodating of cyclists, maybe 95% seem good to me, perhaps more. So it is worth complaining when you get an idiot in a bus as in my experience they are rare.

          Not sure

But I would argue that bus drivers who won't stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk are a whole different ballgame than drivers who cut you off.

          Not cutting off

It's worse than cutting off, they change into my lane while I'm occupying it, as in next to the bus. Without emergency breaking the result is being run over. Depending on where in the crosswalk the pedestrian is, and how fast they're going, this can be more dangerous than failing to stop for a pedestrian.

In fact, it is the equivalent of failing to stop for a pedestrian such that the pedestrian has to suddenly stop walking to avoid being run over.

Reading one of the early rants over the 10th St bike lane, I imagine this will be a reoccuring event on this bike lane. Hopefully not though.

          Well that's something

Well that's something different entirely. Yes, obviously that is a dangerous practice and should also be reported to CPS. Drivers like that are eventually going to injur or kill someone if this is common practice.

          Props to the City

I'm really impressed with how clear the streets are.  In past years, I'd still be riding through 6" of brownsnow.

Getting out of downtown has been a gong show all week.  Obviously, I need to skip out much, much earlier.  Tongue out

          -20 with windchill this

-20 with windchill this morning? Damn! That means winter is officially here, better put some pants on.

CTV is saying + temps again tomorrow. Good, need it to freeze/thaw the residential roads making them easier to ride on.

          Yeah but bone dry

On most of the Bow River Pathway from Edworthy to downtown anyway! I probably wouldn't feel the need for the studded tires if not for the icy sections up in the NW.

          YAY ME!

Officially the coldest I have ever ridden my bike to work in!!  (Also the latest into the season)

My thanks to everyone here.  I have tried to commute in the winter before I found BC, but with no information on routes, clothing and equipment it was pretty easy to give it up as soon as the temp dropped.  So far this year (With the exception of a week and a half battling a cold) I have ridden at LEAST three times a week (exactly what my goal was) and have now ridden down to -20 (my other goal)  I was going to make -20 my cut off, but I think with better shoes, and a good face mask I could easily make -25.

Any face protection suggestions from the peanut gallery.

          Thanks again!!!!

          Face Mask

MEC sells a neoprene/fleece lower face mask that works very well.  It left a meshed holey screen for the mouth, which I found really claustrophobic so I cut it out.

          Me too!

I felt crazy claustrophobic with my mouth covered even with the mesh part over my mouth and the nose holes.  I get all panicky and convinced I can't breathe and make a rediculous spectacle of myself trying to get it off!  I cut the mouth out completely and find that much better.  I usually end up uncovering my face half way through my ride anyway.

I made it down to -30 last year

...there weren't any colder commuting days that I know of, last year.

I have a lightweight under-helmet beanie with a windproof patch on the forehead and light ear coverage. I supplement this with a fleece neck tube (MEC circa 1995). Below -20 I will cover my mouth (but not my nose) for the first 10 minutes of the ride. I also find the pulling up the neck tube beefs up the ear protection too. Closer to -30, I might leave my mouth covered for the whole ride; sometimes I'll tug the tube down so it sits on my chin.

10 Ave. Parking, er, bike lane

There were at least a dozen cars parked in the bike lane on 10 St. between 1 St. and 7 St. when I rode through at 4:00 p.m. today. Even better, a CITY BUS was parked in the bike lane between 6th and 7th.  On the plus side, pretty much every driver that passed me gave me loads of room.  Normally, I don't take 10 Ave. [I prefer 11 Ave. S.W.], so I don't know if this is the status quo or what.  Other than that, it was a pretty decent ride in and out.  Crazy amounts of traffic on the way home...

          Towing frenzy

What we need is a Bylaw that authorizes City-approved towing companies to simply remove cars between the hours of 3:30 and 6:00 pm without a Bylaw officer present.  Encouraging the free-market, capitalistic, entrepreneurial nature of tow truck drivers trying to make an extra buck would clear up this problem in no time.

          Much nicer this morning.  I

Much nicer this morning.  I didn't see many (I mean none) cyclists this morning.  I saw one jogger in Stanley Park, me thinks there are many people off today for some xmas shopping.  Only 4 bikes in the bike room when I got in this morning, grented it was pretty early.  On a super duper yay for me note, I am on Holidays for 4 weeks starting at 15:00is this afternoon.

          I saw 5

I usually come in after the rush hour, but thanks to an early morning wake up from my two kids I decided I might as well go to work early. The 5 cyclists I saw is more than I usually would, but of course I never ride in so early so I've no idea what it means.

On the plus side, what a great ride in this morning. No wind, no snow or ice worries, light traffic, and a nice quiet bike path in the dark.

            I was later than usual

In contrast to @winterrider, I was later than usual. My typical ride time is around 0600. I usually see a few other cyclists and I find that the runners who are out tend to be lit, or at least reflective. My morning departure time has been sliding over the last couple of weeks and I found that today, with my ride between 0700-0730, I saw fewer cyclists. Also, it seems that this time of day has more ninja walkers/runners, than does earlier.

On the up side, as I came out of the neighborhood onto the top of Bowmont, I got a great view of a nearly full moon, very orange, low on the western horizon.

On a completely different topic, a tip of the hat to whomever got their shovel out and cleared an access-way between the pathway on the top of Bowmont park and the roadway at the top of Home Rd. That really makes the transition easier.

            That full moon

I live in Silver springs and know that "view" that you're talking about - looking out to the west with a full moon on the horizon.  That is a pretty impressive sight when the light is just right!

            Gross

If you're eating/drinking this might gross you out.

Anyone else suffer from winter nosebleeds?  Apparantly it's fairly common and known as "Calgary Nose" (according to a friend, who is an ear-nose-throat medical doctor specialist).  Being outside day after day w/ exposure to Calgary's dry air can be a problem for some folks.  Hope you're not one of them.

Dang nose started dripping ~10mins into my ride and I didn't realize it for another ~10-15mins.  Grossed myself out when I figured it out and realized I probably looked like a victim of violence.  Glad I keep a few sealed wet-wipes in my commuting kit so I could clean up in the bike cage before showing my face in public.  Another reason to carry some basics when commuting.

            Yes

I had one two nights ago. I get a few of these every year, but that was the first time it happened near to a bike ride, so I don't think cycling has much to do with it in my case. Meaning I'm no more/less likely to have a problem while on the bike.

            nose bleeding

I had a really bad case of this for several winters, with nose bleeding on the ride in to work  a huge inconvenience.  I went to several doctors, got prescriptions for nasal moisturizer and steroids.  Neither worked. In the end and what worked was putting Vaseline in my nose before bed every night. A doctor recommended it to me.  After a week I was cured and i think I've had 2 nosebleeds in the past 3 years.  Sometimes the simplest solution is the best.

            petroleum jelly ftw

As a lifelong winter-nosebleeder (which, oddly enough improved significantly when I came to Calgary from a wetter climate) vaseline is a lifesaver.   I do it in the morning before I head to work however.   If you put too much on and you're a back sleeper, it can make its way into your lungs and cause lipid pnemonia.

At least that's what the ol' doc told us when I was a kid.

            Original Polysporin

My doctor recommended the original Polysporin (not fast healing, super strength, or the other variations out there) about 15 years ago.  Fixed my problems and I have never had any complications.

            Really enjoyed the ride this

Really enjoyed the ride this morning. I am sporting "new to me" tires - second hand from a friend, little used and altho' not studded are better for pushing the snow out of the tread than the ones I've been using. New light for my b'day in Oct - 300 lumens.  Of coures it's like summer riding right now with snow cleared and very little ice - the ride thru' the park in the dark was a cake walk.  Who could argue with winter riding in these conditions :)

            LOTSA' SNOW!

Just mid morning and I have cleared my walkways twice already, tomorrow could be very interesting. I am using my B&D tubo (200 mph) leave blower, it takes the snow right down to the cement and leaves nothing behind, how nice that would be to have on the MUP instead of the blade that makes everything turn into ice. Regardless, am grateful it is maintained and look forward to the ride tomorrow - if for no other reason than the entertainment of it :)

            yikes, that's nasty - of

yikes, that's nasty - of course mine is electric (as in a super long cord)!! but there are also those rechargeable battery run type. I suppose there could be a battery operated blower that runs off a generator on the little machine - now I'm getting silly - the blower only works on new dry snow. My sidewalks are fabulous by the way :)

            Beautiful day!

Had to ride to MRU this morning to meet a reporter (doing a story about new bike lanes on 50 ave sw) and had the pleasure of riding through all that light fluffy powder on my dutch bike. Very impressed with how easy it was to ride that bike in such deep snow.

Get out and enjoy the conditions!

Also keep an eye open on openfile.ca for the story about the new lanes.

            Spruce/Cedar Cres/North Path/10th St N

Spruce is clear and wonderful.  Side streets are softer snow and require care and attention in order to not slip.

The Cedar Crescent decent is semi-soft snow - so I had a couple times when I came out of the rut and got a "wake-up" call.

North Path (Crowchild underpass to Kennsington) was clear and fine.

10th Street N-Bound bike lane was cleared.  Yesterday, I nearly lost control and slipped into traffic, but it was clear today.  There are some compressed snow "patches" both up and down the hill - so be extra careful.  Especially coming down the hill just after the SAIT roadway. (slightly S after passing under the LRT tracks)
