Saskatoon's Ice Cycle Ride hits 200+

Why do so many Canadian cities have a winter bike ride or celebration and we do not?

Another example of a fractured bike community?

Saskatoon has been hosting a winte bike parade called Ice Cycle and this year's event had over 200 people participate in a bike parade through downtown, story here http://www.thestarphoenix.com/travel/Temperatures+rise+during+coldest+bi...

I think everyone could agree that winter cycling numbers seem to be up dramatically over the last couple years but why no interest in a winter bike festival?  Ice races at Eau Claire?  Bike parade to the ice races?

It would get a lot of attention

It would get a lot of attention here in Calgary, and draw the public eye to cycling, particularly winter biking.  Would be good to help put down the naysayers who claim its just not POSSIBLE to bike in the winter here in Calgary. Love the idea!

This is exactly the sort of thing the City needs to help promote via their Cycling Strategy.

Is there a weight limit

I know the UCI enforces something like a 6 kg weight limit on bikes. I was thinking for the ice race you might want to make sure everything is fair and bring a scale.

Based on a recent weighing of my commuter rig (I was trying to figure out why every little hill seemes to darn hard!) I would suggest a 20 kg limit :), anyone with a lighter bike could have a panier with some heavy rocks stuck on the back.

Winter activites are great. But...

Any and all winter activities for cyclists are great I feel but I want to play devils advocate here and suggest that ice racing or any other event that could be deemed dangerous to NOT be categoried into something that benefits the cycling community on a city wide level as far as promoting it goes. A race of any kind is for the die hards who like a thrill. If you want to promote and spread the word, tame functions that are child friendly and allow for older people and handicapped cyclists - all need to be able to attend and take part.

I for one would dig an ice race. fyi. Sounds interesting.

Where?

You might have mentioned... where would we do such a thing? I know of two outdoor lit arena's down south in Queensland by me but thats far for most people. Do you have something like this up that way?
