How was your ride today? Week of March 4th

Some fresh POW! to make an interesting start to the week.. with more to come tonight... but very warm temps towards the end of the week.  Early evidence of another wacky spring in Calgary.

With daylight savings coming up this next weekend... who's looking forward to early morning dark commuting and why?

slip sliding away...

Fun morning. Poor guy in front of me went down like a sack of turnips on the sandybeach/riverpark hill. Always nortoroiuos with the thaw/melt but with a cover of dnow it was scary. Walked down most of the way. Other than that it was nice. Took the red sled (called this as it is my sled dogs pull bike) with big knobbies and single speed based upon afternoon snow accumulation. But we will have to wait and see. I hear car traffic was bad??

Nice AM, What does PM have in store?

It was a nice morning commute it today with a little bit of the fluffy snow on the ground. It will be interesting to see how much snow is out there at 4 and whether if a 'Snow Event' is declared if it will be more successful than last time (no bike pathways for me).

What I am looking forward to with the darker mornings in seeing the sunrises again!

Oh yeah!

And I also made it to work on time....me and the other biker were the only 2 here for the first 1/2 hour. Ah, these are the best days to ride!

Cleared a 6' Patch of Path

Cleared a 6' patch of the path from Strathcona Hill down to Sarcee/Bow this morning Cool

I was fiddling with my glasses and was going a bit fast for the patch of ice under the snow.  Cracked my knee pretty good too Laughing

Almost...

Ouch, that would sting - I usually have one of those falls at least once a year on the hill next to the Shag golf course.  Just a sheet of ice with the freeze/thaw cycle in the spring.  Hope the after effects don't linger too long for you!

I almost bit it this morning on the paved path on the south side of Bow Trail leading up to the new bridge.  I was the first tracks with only a sciff of snow.  I had some good speed going when I thought I should maybe slow it down a touch as I didn't know what was underneath.  I feathered the back brakes and my back tire quickly slid out about 6-8 inches.  Heart skipped a beat but I was able to stay upright without having to touch feet to ground.  Needless to say I slowed it down after that the rest of the way in.  No other close calls.  Otherwise it was a great ride in.

first day back!

Yikes, first day back after 2 weeks in the Bahamas, this is not funny!! I headed out pretty early and had a good ride. This afternoon may be different. I'm taking part in a survey where I track my travel and activities for 24 hours. Done by City of Calgary and Government of Alberta. Today is my travel day to keep track so no way in Hell was I going to NOT use my bike to commute. Anyone else doing this survey?

Survey

I am. My day is the 13th but I haven't got my journal yet - filled out the survey.....when did you get your journal?

I did it...

But my day was last Sunday (Feb 26) when it snowed, so I wasn't very motivated to go anywhere.  I did take a spin up to the library, just to get out.

I did it too

My day was Feb. 23, 85% of my trips under 5km were by bike or on foot.  The other 15% were on the way to Golden, BC [not feasible for walking].

Nokian studded worked well

My studded tires served me well this morning, not even a hint of a slip. And there were lots of ice under snow sections. I even  had the front tire inflated at 65lbs. I'll be going down to 15lbs for the ride home tonight, don't want to push my luck with hard tires on ice/snow.

Jealous

I'm a little jealous. No snow out here in Strathmore yet. This morning's ride was cool and windy, but pleasant. I love making fresh tracks, and I'm looking forward to the impending sunrises for Daylight Savings. Actually, this morning was the first day in about 2 weeks that I used my lights, it was definitely gloomier than normal. Looking outside my classroom window right now, it's really foggy, and it looks like the white stuff could start falling any minute. And to think, I went on a 50 km ride on my road bike in the sunshine yesterday afternoon. Any day on the bike is a good day, regardless of weather! Cool

Making fresh tracks

I set out for a night shift yesterday night and was surprised at how much the snow pushed my bike around.   Driving during the night shift was good, and biking home this morning was even better!   Everyone out there seems really stoic and cooperative.   Everyone at work remains skeptical of my choice in transportation.   I try to tell them I don't plan on changing, and that there are advantages...

- I don't have to warm my bike up every time I want to take it somewhere; don't have to plug it in

- it doesn't get stuck in the snow unless I'm doing it really... really... really wrong

- crashes are much more hilarious than with vehicles

- the pathways get cleared at or before normal roads, and it's often faster to bike for many routes

- the other clear benefits of normal everyday cycling still apply.

I try to tell them with jokes like "Oh man!  I just locked myself out of my bike while I was letting it warm up!", or that it's been really expensive to fuel my mode of transportation lately.    It's funny how people can take the skeptical side of things when they see it empowers someone.

And if you do get stuck, you

And if you do get stuck, you just pick it up and move on. Try that with an SUV!

And what I consider the most important: in snowy conditions it is very, very difficult to kill or maim someone with your bike, or destroy thousands of $ worth of property, unlike with a car. 21 injury and 280 non-injury collisions yesterday.

And on a day like today: faster.

I don't need to be at the office until a little later so I am going to miss the morning crawl hour. The pathways should be in good shape by 10:30 or so.

There's no beer at work

One would have been nice to have in the shower.

Shovelling the walks and driveway followed by riding to work today made for quite a work out.

Northbound the wind played a big role and the streets varied from clear on down hill north facing slopes to drifted and rutted on the lee side of those same slopes.

The portion of paths I use looked smooth and unbroken but really were just drifted smooth over yesterday evenings pedestrian tracks. So you're rolling along thinking "i found it" that perfect smooth rool in snow and then bump bump bump and you're searching for it again.

fatbikin

Finally had a chance to take our Salsa Mukluk demo out for a test ride in real winter conditions - what a blast!  Rode for about 2hrs yesterday and then back into work this morning.  Was able ot clean the Quarry Trail going up last night and absolutely flew down it this mornign - so much fun!

Anyone is welcome to take it for a test ride, just call ahead and book it.

Here is a little video - http://youtu.be/J2Pp0FAt7Ew

me cranky

Shoveled all the sidewalks before leaving the house. Then tried to ride the neighborhood streets, gave up and jogged pushing the bike - ahhh, the bike path, what a relief, nice and clear and easy to ride. Then the beltline - yikes - was on and off the bike more times than I can remember, did the half run half ride scenario, finally made it to work a bit late but close enough. I hate to say it but I will anyway - running in sand is much more pleasant!

First!

I was first tracks this morning on the top of Bowmont, approaching Home Rd. But only just. I decided I didn't want to risk my skinny-tired fixie on the slime and slush on the roadway going down Home Rd., so I rode over to the adjacent pathway and pretty much slid the entire length, standing up, holding onto my bike beside me. I probably should have ridden down the road, it turns out. I saw a rider on a mountain bike head down the vehicle tracks as I started down the path. Once I got to the MUP (shortly after 6am) I found it hadn't been cleared up to Shouldice. Once past Edworthy, the variable packing from the prior bike and pedestrian ruts meant I couldn't keep a line to save my life. Really hard slogging with the speed staying in the low 'teens. I met the westbound pathway plows near 29 St. and the ride improved greatly after that. Gave the drivers each a wave as they went by. Overall, my commute time was 50% longer than normal and my knees are pretty sore from pushing the fixie hard with pretty low revs. Looking forward to the homeward trip on a cleaner (I hope) path.

I'm convinced

I've been wondering this winter if I wouldn't be better off with a single gear bike for the winter, especially as my commute doesn't really involve hills, but reading this tale I think I'm probably better off sticking with my many gears.

I hope your knees feel better soon.

SS/Fixed

I find, like many things when commuting through the winter, we have to make choices that are tradeoffs that we don't have to think about in summer. E.g. you could put on the studded tires. Do you take them off whenever you have a bunch of dry pavement or suffer through the added rolling resistance and wear and tear?

The choice to ride fixed means a couple of things to me:

  1. I can choose 1 gear and 98% of my commute is flat, so I bias my gear choice to what's nice to ride on the flats but is geared down enough to handle a bit of snow. On days like today, that's a struggle. I could choose a much easier gear and find myself spinning like mad on a bunch of days when I riding the bare and dry.
  2. Like with studded tires, I could make the decision to swap equipment more often and spend the extra few minutes on a given day, selecting a gear more optimized to the conditions (like today, I might have added about 3 teeth to my rear cog, sheesh!)
  3. The payback for having to either spin fast on the flats or struggle in certain conditions or on certain grades is a much simpler job when doing my own regular maintenance.

Clearly, the choice to ride ss/fixed is a personal one. Fixed isn't for everyone, but I sure enjoy it on most days. @winterrider, given your flat commute, I'd say you'd be a great candidate because it's only on the really snowy days that the flats become challenging...and how many of those do we really get out of a winter's-worth of commuting? Besides, they say it improves my pedalling technique!

Whatever we ride...getting out on the bike is always great!

If it ain't fixed... It's broke!

One reason I prefer fixed is when I was riding to rehearsal last night, the fog was freezing to me and my bike on contact. I had to take my glasses off as a result, just so I could continue to see where I was going. Ice was also accumulating on my front rim making my brake nearly useless. I was glad that i could still "backpedal" to control my speed, otherwise I would have been in trouble. The rim was iced up so bad, I could squeeze my front brake lever tight and there was barely any resistance.

Fixed gear/singlespeed is most definitely a personal preference. I have a t-shirt that reads: "Singlespeed. In the right gear 5% of the time."

I hate Freezin' Up!

My glasses were freezin' up last night, as well.  I stopped to wipe them off 3 times.  My biggest hate when riding in this transition weather was with my derauiller cables : So I went full cable housing.  As you can see from the pic I took yesterday, I wouldn't have had a very good shifting experience due to the ice buidup on the downtube!

I'm sure that I have been "saved" at least 3 times this year from running my cables on the top tube -effortless shifting.  And if you want to do this cable re-route and need the seat tube cable housing stop, go see Shane at the Bike Shop on 11th, he perservered me pestering him several times until he found some and they have them in stock now.

Cable routing

Agree about the pain of cable-freeze.  I stripped down an old frame and had a bunch of work done on it a couple years ago.  Part of the work involved rerouting the cables along the top tube.  My old commuter had them on the downtube and they would ice up or gum up with muck so badly that shifting was almost always compromised in winter.  The cables on the top tube make a huge difference, though they will still also gum up over time (I'm not running full housing).  Cable routing is definitely something to consider for anyone shopping around for a bike to commute on year-round.  Assuming that person doesn't want to go single speed.

Still No Crashes

My new winter vehicle hasn't let me down yet.  Today was hard pedalling almost all the way, except for 26th Avenue.  Few drivers and those were very foregiving.

variable today

Wet asphalt, deep fresh snow, packed snow, and brownsnow

Pathways were good except for Crescent Heights hill. Why is that never cleared???

Here's hoping for not much of the brown stuff on the way home.

Yup, this morning was a slog.

Seems that I spent as much time going sideways as I did going forward for the first half of my commute.  Sure was glad to see the pathway cleared from the nursing home at Home Road on into downtown, though.

Better morning today...but keep your head up!

The ride in on the MUP was much better this morning. But keep your head up on the MUP as there are lots of icy patches! I kept the wheels down all the way in, but there were a few spots where I was doing alot of 'hoping' as I cruised across a slick bit. Also, it felt chillier than the reported -9°C.

Back in the Saddle

Bravo to those of you who rode in the last couple of days.  I can imagine it was at times frustrating, at times exhilerating and overall a sense of accomplishment!  This was my first ride after the big snow and things went pretty smooth.  Definitely snowy pathways up in the Dalhousie and Varsity area.  53rd Street NW bike lanes were half-cleared, i.e. the City did plow part of the lane so one could (sort of) ride within the bike lane.  52nd Street NW bike lane looked cleared but I didn't go that direction.  Icy sections, like seacloud noted, along the river until crossing over onto the south side at Crowchild.  Things were much clearer from there to downtown.  Downtown roads were decent.

What a difference

Wow, what a difference a workday makes.  The ride to work this morning was deep brownsnow on some of the residential streets.  Tough slogging.  But it magically disappeared over the course of one day, and the streets were bare (albeit wet) when I came home!  What a great surprise.  I am still baffled at how fast that melted.

Agreed - what a difference

This morning, the paths in Bowmont were about 60% bare, 35% compacted snow and 5% ice.

Coming home, in real true to life March weather, it was more like 90, 5 and 5.  Amazing what +5C and sun can do to burn it off!

The only downside is that there's gonna be a lot of ice on those off camber hills in the morning, so bring your skates or your luge, or whatever....

Roads last night, MUP today

Last night, I had an atypical commute. I left the office at midday and took the train, with my bike, to Crowfoot for an appointment. Afterwards, I rode through a corner of Scenic Acres, down through Silver Springs to the old bus trap, through Varsity Estates and home, all on the roads. Except for the little bit of cul de sac on the Varsity Estates side of the bus trap (not actually a trap anymore), the roads were wet and clear of snow. The trip down 53rd St. confirmed what others have said about the state of the bike lane. It looks like it was cleared by the plows half or more of the width, but then the city sidewalk plow came along and pushed the sidewalk snow back into the bike lane. Less than 1/3 of the lane was usable.

This morning, the MUP was in pretty good shape. While there were many icy patches, they were small enough to be able to roll across with momentum and care. Nice morning today and looking forward to a pleasant homeward commute on the path later today.

53rd St NW

Here is what the bike lane on 53rd St NW looked like this morning. Hard to believe this is considered a priority lane for immediate snow clearance after a snowfall.

Missed the best part

Darren, you missed the best part, the big piles of snow that have been shovelled into the bike lane south of Varsity Drive!  There's no clearance at that end.

Interstingly, the section you put the video of seems to have been made worse by someone that drove along the curb lane and splashed big lumps of slush back onto the bike lane.   Not sure who would have done that or why but it complicates the problem.  The best-cleared section the NB lane between 40th and Varsity, they at least cleared to the curb there.  Not sure why they can't do the same along most of the rest of the NB and SB lanes as there is room to push snow off without it ending up on the sidewalk.

evidence

just more evidence that bike lanes maybe should be raised and running alongside sidewalks and cleared by the snow machine guys? There is no perfect solution but bike lanes beside cars will never work.

Yes, gets worse as you go south

I agree that it gets worse as you go south. I purposefully don't ride that stretch just because of that (hence no video).  Interestingly, I spoke with "Warren from Roads" at the City of Calgary a week or so ago, and he claimed that they won't remove snow deposited in the bike lane by residents and that I should go to Bylaw Services about it (something about too much volume of snow to move).  Anyways, I like holding up this stretch as an example because they have NO excuses here.

And that tire track along the curb is from the sidewalk snow plow, I believe.

Better North

I came down the entire section of 53rd this morning.  They had pretty much cleared the bike lanes right to curb both SB and NB north of Varsity Estates Drive.  The section you showed was driven over by a large vehicle again.  That entire length of snow ridge was packed down and whatever didn't get packed was thrown onto the sidewalk in big chunks.  Not sure if it was the City that did this but it was some sort of relatively large dual axle vehicle from the looks of the tire tracks.

Saw that too

I saw that too.  At first I thought Roads had come and tried to plow the bike lane and just pushed everything up onto the sidewalk.  But after a closer look, I think a school bus must have done that.  They often pull in and park in the bike lane just before the intersection of Varsity Dr.

This is a crappy video of the sidewalk (I was going to turn back and film it again, but got distracted by traffic).

Yeah! for Shorts!

Friday morning I took off my studded tire and put on shorts, a rear fender, and, oh yeah, a normal front tire.

Going home from work I wore a short sleeved shirt and a vest.  Spring is here!

Blinding

As I approached the 14th Street underpass at about 6:15am (on the south side pathway) I had to slow down to a crawl as I was blinded by the headlights of a van that was parked in the underpass.  The truck had a bucket and it looks like it was trying to repair the light under there.  They took up one full lane and 1/2 of the other.  With them parked on an incline their lights were aimed right up into my sight line, making it hard to see if anyone was oncoming.  Slowly manoeuvered through their 2 pylons in front of the truck and again 2 others once I reached the other side.   Nice that they were fixing this light that has been out forever.  I guess there never is a good time for them to be doing this repair, there is always pedestrian or bike traffic (unless middle of the night!).

How are the paths in the city?

Thinkin' of coming in to Calgary (from Canmore) to ride the pathways tomorrow - Sunday March 11.  Is it fairly clear riding at present?  Has anyone been on the Lake Chestermere path in last few days - is that snow free?

Thanks for any local intel...

Pathway conditions

all the pathways I've been riding have been really good, just a little ice in teh morning form the runoff.  Not sure about the canal pathway, but with the weather we've had for the past 3 days I can' t imagine there'd be much snow.
