Blustery!
Rode the fast bike this morning. Found myself in the aero bars alot due to the wind. I was hoping to find the insert from my iPhone case that blew out when I had it on the bike rack, on the car, yesterday morning, and forgot to latch the case shut. No luck. At least my phone wasn't in it

Runoff
Submitted by sherryrunswest on
As sure as the sun rises, the runoff (freeze/thaw cycle) has started on the paved pathway beside Shag Golf course. Was expecting it this morning so able to navigate around it on the grass to the right. It looked like it was flash frozen, you could see the flow lines (very spikey - would hate to fall on that!) A couple of other smaller icy sections further down the hill but not nearly as bad as the section at the top.
Chunky Ice
Submitted by themacneils on
The top third of Qaurry Trail is bare but then quickly turns into a chunky, rutted (lots of longitudinal wheel ruts and feet) icy mess, not unlike some sections of the river. I was gripping my brakes pretty good thinking ooh that's gonna hurt if I fall. The rest wasn't quite as bad and the last switchback was dry but I think I'm gonna avoid it for the rest of the week...
Absolutely gorgeous weather though.

Clear sailing down in Fish Creek between Deer Run and Douglasdale. Nothing but fastness on the slicks. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...
Glad to be rid of the white stuff. This year has been a bad one for me. Normally I ride so much more in winter but I truly was not in that mindset this year. Been looking fwd to the heat more than usual. Winter doldrums got to me I suppose.
you missed out, Scott

best winter commuting season EVER! I've missed next to zero days on the bike.
Best day of 2012

Felt like the best day so far this year on the path, and was rewarded with my fastest commute time this year! Wasn't even pushing for it, just happened to catch all the green lights I think... I suspect we haven't seen the last of winter, but I'm going to enjoy this week's warmth to the max.
Broken glass

Careful out there! No bad luck so far but I've been seeing a lot of broken glass, esp. in the alleyways.
Other than that great conditions, couldn't ask for anything better!

... from waaaaay up North all the way down to 16th Ave? the zoo?
what about from Beddington westwards towards Hidden Valley? up to Edgemont?
Would be nice to add a few extra km's to either morning or eve commute, but I'd rather not end up on a skating rink or with damaged goods.
Nose Creek all clear...

From downtown to Harvest Hills Blvd. They've plowed all year again for that section. West of the Blvd there was some ice on the weekend, but I'd bet it's melted now.

Still some ice under the bridge at 16 Ave. but not hard to glide over. Just try not to hit it going 35 kph at dusk!

Opposite problem

I had the opposite problem today. You know it is windy when you have to pedal downhill to keep moving forward.
Glad to have drop bars today, I'll tell you!
Of course, no sooner did I get home than I realized I was late for a Bike Calgary meeting (folding bike saved the day and I hitched a ride most of the way!).

10th St NW today

Just north of 16th Ave NW. Not so busy at 8:30am today, even though the light had just turned green a few seconds earlier (Oh, and, in case you are curious I did pull off onto the sidewalk to take the picture!).

10 Ave SW
Submitted by 2wheeler on
I rode 10 Ave SW both directions this evening. There were 6 other cyclists heading westbound at 6:30pm, and all of us had to dodge in and out from the parked cars. The automobile traffic is still pretty heavy that time of day. Seems to me the hours this is a bike path should be extended, or preferably be made a full time bike lane.
Isn't there a thread specifically for 10 Ave? I couldn't find one.
Yes

A Bike Calgary board member has been working very hard on the 10th Avenue issue.
In regards to parking. I spoke to the CPA today and was told that, unless there is specific signage to designate "no parking" they cannot do any enforcement. I believe 10th Ave SW has specific signage but it appears to be hidden amongst a smattering of other signage (not that this is an excuse for parking in the bicycle lane). As far as other bicycle lanes, CPA is unable to do any type of enforcement in the absence of explicit signage denoting "no parking". The signage denoting "reserved lane" (i.e. the diamond with the bike, bus, taxi, whatever vehicle symbol) for bicycles is not, in their opinion, sufficient to qualify for enforcement, despite the fact that the signage itself explicitly denotes the lane is for a specific purpose only.
This has also been communicated to other Bike Calgary BOD members. Anyone with concerns on this should contact 311. 311 should refer the matter to Transportation Solutions.
Last minute detour

Got to the pathway on the south side of Bow Trail leading to the new bridge when in the distance I saw what looked like a dog/coyote. It was still quite dark so I slowed down a bit to see what it was. It had run across the path and then back onto the grassy park area - figured it was a dog but it looked like it could be a pitbull (short, muscular, small ears and big head). I didn't see any owner in the near vicinity so I decided to u-turn and go back to the lights at 26th/Bow Trail and cross there. Didn't want to run the risk of riding past whatever it was and spook it and have it charge me.
Probably a good choice.

Probably a good choice. Personally I would be more concerned if it were a dog, rather than a coyote. I meet up with coyotes once in awhile on the river pathway (one time I even saw one out my window on my sidewalk). They are singleminded and looking for a mousey!! They pay no attention to me and just keep on going. I suppose if it were more than one at a time I might feel differently. On the other hand some dogs will be agressive when seemingly unprovoked. If they are at large and no owner about I stay clear!
I Agree - Coyotes are not so bad

I ran into one on the hill in Stanley Park once and stopped and watched it for about 15 mins. He was mousin' and only about 10 or 15 feet away (needless to say, I was off my bike and the bike was between me & him!).
But then there was the time I let my dog out for a pee around 3 o'clock in the morning and she chased after 3 coyotes who were in the alley garbage pickin', and I was running down the alley after her in my underwear! They eventually turned and gave her the "ugly snarl" and she came back to me pretty fast with her tail between her legs and a sheepish look on her face.
Left out one bit
Submitted by sherryrunswest on
Once I got close enough I realized it wasn't a coyote. This dog didn't have a tail which quickly ruled out the coyote scenario. It had a 'nub' like a doberman or rottweiler - but it didn't look like either of these breeds. I would have been fine going past a coyote, like you said they aren't generally interested in us humans. Have seen a couple along the river pathway too and passed them closely without incident, didn't even seem to startle them.
Dog incidents in that area
Submitted by theorangejacket on
Two incidents in that exact spot actually - it's on my commute as well, the first one I out biked the dog (I can move pretty darn fast when a dog is growling and snapping at my heels) and he gave up eventually.
The second one a few days later make me wipe out on some grass in my effort to escape and I lay the bike down. The owner came running up, all apologies, no damage done, but I was absolutley furious. The dog was a big goofball and friendly but I was so spooked by the first incident that I wasn't thinking right.
You were wise to be cautious in my opinion.
Hey, that's not snow...

Had a speedy ride in and a pretty nice ride home today. Forecast was for sun this afternoon, so I dropped my commuter gear in a pile, inhaled some food and went for a 2+ hr spin out towards Bragg Creek. The wind was fearsome, but the searing pain in my quads made me forget all about my glacial speed. A little bit before my pre-determined turnaround point, a buddy zips by going the other way, does a u-turn and rides with me the rest of the way out and then all the way back. I get home, pour myself a glass of wine and the skies open up with hail. WTF? Oh wait, I forgot I live in Calgary.
Good times!
