How was your ride? Week of April 30th

Nobody? Ok, I'll go. Awesome ride in this morning. Although a little to chilly for the shorts. Got ahead of myself there. Don't forget its BTWD on Friday.

Easy ride in

Non-Eventful.  It wasn't too chilly, I wore long pants.  I had expected rain, but that came later.  Not worried as I have my gear....

Sure wish I could leave the office now!!!

Windy ride home

I faced a headwind riding east to the zoo but then a crosswind shifting to an almost tail wind for part of the trek north.  The dog people were out -- most had their leashes attached (don't get me going on this one).

Tomorrow its going to be wet and I will ride the bus (and likely catch some nasty flu bug).

Tail wind was amazing

I had a fast ride home (due west from Downtown), and near the end I was almost able to keep up to my wife when she passed me in the car. Not bad on my winter bike on a slight incline. Gotta love the tail wind!

Saw so many cyclists today!

Wow I saw a lot of cyclists today, especially on the roads in places I don't normally see them.  Fantastic, especially given the weather forecast this morning.

The disappointing part was that I watched people ride by as I begrudingly (and grumpily) drove my car.  Sigh.

Fewer Cyclists today

I counted less than 10 bikes in our cage this morning - Buy a raincoat all you Hydrophobes!!!!

And I've had a few people asking me today whether I rode or not and I STILL get the "You Are Crazy" Look.  They seem to have a bigger problem with weather than I do.....

The Antidote

I keep a spare set of clothes (including a raincoat and a pair of wool socks) in my office.

I also have a small fan that I sometimes use to dry my shoes over the course of the day.

Fenders?

Seems like fenders are too obvious, based on the large majority of commuters I am seeing that happily spray goose poop water all aver themselves and anyone unfortunate enough to be riding behind them.  To each their own, I guess...

Warning for Ogden Road Commuters!

Cyclists on Ogden, be forewarned! Ogden will continue to be closed tomorrow and I just got home from the detour on Blackfoot, which was extremely confrontational. I believe that I will be taking the bike path tomorrow am!

Nice week

So far, it's been a nice week of riding. I rode the 'nice' bike on Monday and headed for home before any moisture. Stayed home Tuesday to greet the plumber, which was too bad, since I kind of like riding in the rain (goose poop notwithstanding). Had a tough ride in on Wednesday morning, with a bunch of stuff in my backpack and the commuter-bike's tires were due for a top-up inflation. Homeward, the tires were still soft but the pack was light so it balanced out. Today, I topped up the air and rode in against a light headwind. Seemed busier on the pathway than some days.

Looking forward to tomorrow! I convinced at least one co-worker who doesn't regularly bike-commute to ride tomorrow morning. Me and the other regular rider will meet him at the breakfast. I figure I'll just head down there early and keep eating until they arrive! :-D

I hope to see the MUP full of commuters, seasoned and otherwise! Latest forecast is for cool but dry tomorrow morning.

Morning Scones

Well, today I was able to make a little detour to my favorite scone spot, Sidewalk Citizen Bakery on Stephen Ave and 2nd Street to pick up some for me and co-workers! If you haven't tried it you should! I generally don't have to ride through downtown and am always reminded how annoying it is that you can't ride bikes down Steven Avenue because of the lack of N-S routes across the tracks south of downtown, but it is what it is - I can just be thankful I don't have to drive a car downtown, try and find a parking spot and then pay a whole shcwack of money to do so!

Lovey ride in

There were more bikes than usual on the paths today, especially heading west near Foothills hospital. I wonder if bike to work day was advertised there.

I did have one idiot honk at me on 8th ave because I was riding out of the door zone between 8th and 9th streets west where 8th ave narrows. I caught her at the light and exlained I was trying to avoid being killed. Her response was that she had no room to pass. Nice to know what drivers think is important.

She didn't even have anything to complain about since there is rarely oncoming traffic there and its quite easy to pass a cyclist, even if they're on the yellow line. She did in fact pass me (without any difficulty), and then she promptly got stopped at the red light 100 feet down the road at which point I was able to talk to her. But I was really ruining her day....

You...

You selfish, self righteous scofflaw;)

When will cyclists get it? Roads are for cars, not people.

...And certainly not for poor people, and clearly you are poor, otherwise you'd be driving a car. Right?

Like Margret Thatcher (my hero) once said "A man who, beyond the age of 26, finds himself on a bus can count himself as a failure. ".

I'm pretty sure that 'bus' and 'bicycle' are pretty interchangable.

Great Day for Bike to Work!

Unlike previous years when I stood shivering, coffee in hand and chewing on fridgid pancakes, this morning was very pleasant and it seems the good weather brought out lots of riders. The pancake breakfast looked to be well attended, a great event for sure, enjoyed chatting with other regular riders and those who ride occassioanlly. Good to see everyone out enjoying this sunny morning (and enjoying pancakes, sausages, fruit, juice and coffee!!) Thanks to Bow Cycle for the quick mini tune. Directed a few that I chatted with to visit the Bike Calgary booth :)

Beautiful morning!

Yeah, we really lucked out on the weather!  What a beautiful morning.  Took a detour to hit the downtown breakfast before going to MRU.  It was nice to meet more members of the cycling community in person!  Thank you to Lonny and Andrew and everyone else for putting on such a great event!  Hoping we get some nice weather for MRU's Bike to Campus Day next Thurs!

I forgot something

On my ride in this morning I was idly wondering when I would see my first goslings of the year, and 1 minute later there they were, so watch out for the cute little fluffballs. :)

Oh My Gosh

I completely forgot, I saw my first goslings this morning too, I wonder if it was the same bunch. I saw them just west of the Crowchild ramp (north side of the river).

Stupid driver tricks

I was crusing on the MRU campus road this morning, which has a speed limit of 30. I was doing about 30, but I could hear a car behind me, and you know how sometimes you can 'feel' the impatience? I then had to slow to let a pedestrian cross but quickly got back up to speed, and then with a roaring engine a smallish car passes me --- by this time I was doing about 35 (downhill section). Then came the three speedbumps. I caught up to the car as it slowed for the first one, but I guess she did not want that to happen again and roared over the other two, bottoming out the car with a loud clank each time. All this so she could pull up into the parking lane in from of the main entrance and wait for someone and she was still there after I put my bike in the locker and walked to the door!
