Bike Calgary welcomes City’s new cycling coordinator
Significant Cycling Strategy action Item has been met through hiring of Tom Thivener
07 May 2012
Bike Calgary is excited to welcome Calgary's new Cycling Coordinator, Tom Thivener. Calgary’s largest transportation cycling organization is hopeful that Mr. Thivener's five years as Tuscon's Bicycle and Pedestrian Program Manager will result in implementation of the City of Calgary’s Cycling Strategy actions to the benefit of all Calgarians. According to Bike Calgary director Brent Clark, “because significant financial resources have been dedicated to the Strategy, it is important for an experienced and receptive individual to take ownership of the cycling file and ensure these resources are invested appropriately while being held accountable that cyclists’ needs are being met.”
According to the position profile, Mr. Thivener will conduct a significant amount of engagement with internal staff, Council, special interest groups and the public on issues related to cycling. Bike Calgary has been heavily involved with engagement with the City and looks forward to meeting with Mr. Thivener when he begins work in Calgary this June. If Bike Calgary’s request to the Mayor’s Office is fulfilled, June will be declared Bike Month making Tom’s arrival perfectly-timed.

I am excited to see that the City has filled this very important position and hope that Tom can help us all realize our dream of Calgary as a fantastically safe and fun place to cycle.
I've said it before and I'll say it again - I believe Calgary can easily become the best cycling city in North America because we already have what other cities don't - the MUP's - all we need now is signs and paint!
Welcome to Calgary Tom, looking forward to meeting you.
Cue the well worn discussion ....
