How was your ride May 28-June 1?

I am working at home today but I am sure everyone else was riding in this beautiful sunshine inspired by the first Canadian to win a Grand Tour event!

How was your ride this week?

Forums:

Great!

The sun was shining, the birds were singing, pavement was dry and I had on the exactly right clothing. Drivers were accomodating and everyone seemed to be in a good mood! All's well.

Record time!

I'm not Ryder Hesjedal, but I made it from beltline to U of C in under 19 minutes today. Must be the warm weather, fresh air etc... perfect day for a ride!

Thought I FINALLY found a rack that will fit my Norco Scene (has disc brakes and doesn't have the regular connectors for racks, just the axle bolt).. I picked up the Axiom Streamliner Road DLX at Cyclepath yesterday and went to put it on last night and it wouldn't fit no matter what I tried.  Need to bring it back now and try a different model (Streamliner Disc DLX).. they don't have it in stock, but said they could order it for me.  Woke up this morning and my rear tire was flat..  There was some broken glass on the road on the way home yesterday that I didn't see until the last minute.. tried my best to avoid it, but apparently didn't do a good enough job!  Between that and the saddle soreness... it's been a frustrating couple days!

Hopefully everyone else is having a better go of it this week! Laughing

We can probably give decent advice about the racks if you provide more information. Like front or rear?  Look into the racks from Old Man Mountain (half their models) or Tubus (just one or two models). The nice people at Bow Cycle stock OMM racks, which is the way to go if you're not totally sure about fit. For Tubus racks, you will need to special order.

Took a detour on my way to

Took a detour on my way to the office (still working nights) through Sandy Beach, slowed down and really enjoyed my commute.

Glad to see so many of our Olympic hopefuls out on the paths today, it appears they were all training for London.

New commute to the SE

Cycled to my new work location for the first time this week. My work site is in Douglasdale Glen. For the most part, it was lovely! I ride the sidewalk along Heritage and fear for my life. (It's against my principles to ride on a sidewalk.) And the intersection at Deerfoot/Southland/Blackfoot leaves much to be desired! But Acadia is lovely and the pathway on the east side of the Bow was such a joy! Dogs playing in the river; a fly fisherman; wonderful wild flowers; cherry tree blossoms; rowers on the reservoir. Delightful!

Replaced my tube last night

Replaced my tube last night and put on the new Axiom Journey Disc rack.. took off the gel seat cover.. first day riding with a pannier, and therefore the weight on the bike instead of the weight on me..  what a difference!  Really enjoyed the ride today.  The climbs are getting easier again too.. which is nice!  Just wish the mornings would warm up a bit so I could shed the jacket..

getting use to it

Getting use to all the bikes on the pathway now and the rest ofthe pathway users all seem to be getting use to each other and playing nice. Little chilled this morning but refreshing.

Happy Hump Day!

Loooovely ride in this morning, but I was blown away by the congestion where the Peace Bridge path meets up with the pathways along the south side of the river. So good to see so many people out of their cars! There were also about 20 goslings that blocked the pathways as I headed into Inglewood, I had to stop or risk being batted off my bike by a couple angry mama geese Smile

good ride

Hands felt a little chilly at start and glad to have a shell. The wid path between 17th ave and ogden rd was not that busy. Only saw another rider going north.

Edworthy Park closed Wednesday afternoon

At 4:15 I arrived at the bridge to Edworthy park to find the police and fire departments have the park closed.

I detoured to Crowchild. This is the first time in the 19 years I've been riding this route that I've found it closed. It was still a wonderful ride home.

With one exception, a dark Gray short box truck with over tinted windows and license BBB1945 who insists on buzzing cyclists, over reving as he does so. I've only ridden 29th st SW twice in the past month and both times I've encountered this obnoxious asshole.

This morning riding home I

This morning riding home I decided to tak ethe long way. Left DT and went through Sandy Beach, around the reservoir, and got hopelesly lost in Fish Creek park. Ended up being a 40 km ride home with all my detours (some on purpose, and some accidental)

Anybody else ever get lost in there?

Close call

On wednesday evening I took the east bow river path out of downtown - heading to a friends house to watch the first game of the LA-NJ series.  I found myself following a messenger through the detour to the 9th street bridge into Inglewood.  As we were riding along the sidewalk on the north side of the road, auto traffic at a standstill, an SUV came roaring through a gap and pulled into the parking lot at Fort Calgary.  He just grazed the back wheel of the messenger, who luckily stayed upright and kept going.

I was about 3 seconds behind him so had plenty of time to stop, but it could easily have been worse.  I know riding on the sidewalk is dangerous, this is just one more reminder, but what alternatives do cyclists have in that location?  Crossing 9th Ave at 6th St. and riding with traffic isn't very appealing, particularly if you want to get back on the path at the Deane house.

I'd be curious to know how regular riders on this route deal with the detour?

Pathway (Not Pathway) Near Fort Calgary

The City has totally obliterated the pathway near Fort Calgary.  Last fall, just before freeze up and snow, they closed the pathway from the 9th Avenue bridge across the Elbow river to the foot bridge across the Bow onto the Zoo Island.  They only worked on it last fall for 1 to 2 weeks, but left the path closed all winter.  The suggested alternative was to ride along 9th avenue on the sidewalk past Fort Calgary.  This was not a good situation.

As of this week, the situation is much worse.  The pathway on the west side of the Elbow river has been closed (for destruction) under 9th Avenue.  There is now no safe way to cross 9th Avenue near Fort Calgary.  There is a pathway on the east side of the Elbow river with the opportunity to cross at the traffic light (but this light seems to almost never change at morning rush hour (always red to cross 9th avenue).  The pathway on the east side of the Elbow also is rather unsafe at at least 2 spots with narrow passages and blind corners under bridges (with steep descents on both sides).

Note that before the pathway on the west side of the Elbow was destroyed, it was perfectly adequate.  It was smooth, wide and in good condition (rebuilt only recently).  Now for an extended period, we have no path and as taxpayers have to replace the previous perfectly acceptable pathway.

So where to ride????  I will be riding on 9th avenue in the middle of the driving lanes both east and west in front of Fort Calgary until the pathway is rebuilt.  It is not safe to ride on the sidewalk (which is at least partially blocked in several locations due to large signs advising of road construction).

wildlife

As I road out of my driveway this morning a cute little baby bunny hopped across my yard, then as I was approaching the Crowchild bridge I saw the beaver in the water just along the north side of the river, haven't seen him in a few days, nice to know he is still around. Then the ride eastbound on 8th ave presented the 2 legged variety of wildlife. The travelling lane of cars was at a standstill, as I (and a fellow cyclist behind me) were bombing along in the "bike" lane, a passenger from one of the stopped cars decided to get out!! Door wide open - I shouted - HEY, HOLD THE DOOR! The guy on the bike behind me shouted much nastier things :(. The man at the car made himself skinny and pulled the door closed as much as possible with himself wedged in it leaving ample room for the 2 of us to pass without incicdent - all very interesting, just another day on the morning commute.
