I didn't ride in today, but a coworker rider of mine indicates that the water is bad in the SE, north of Lynnview area in the Beaver Dam flats, as well as the underpass under the railway tracks at Alyth Bridge. Anyone else run into water there? These are both low lying areas where the river can overflow. He is wondering about the ride home, and i am wondering if it will clear for tomorrow's ride.
Water on the pathways

Pathways around the Elbow
Submitted by RyanC on
Pathways around the Elbow River in Mission to Victoria Park/Talisman Centre are flooded as of yesterday. The Elbow pathway from the Stampede Grounds to the Bow/Inglewood are dry, but with rising water levels that could change in a spot or two.

North side of the Bow river on the Zoo Pathway is closed.
The Gate was closed on the west side of the zoo section...
Submitted by rustabout1981 on
Heading from the NE
there was nothing to indicate the path along the zoo was closed. Ended up biking through water deep enough to soak my feet. The gate just east of Baines (?) Bridge was closed.
I'm definitely going to abide by the closure. Not just for risk of a fine, but if the water is any deeper you'd have to walk your bike about 50 meters or risk getting water in your bearings/bottom bracket/etc... Just not worth it.
Someone was rescued last year

I think it might have been a bike calgary member whose bike was salvaged from the river after they rode into waist deep water on that section of path. Be wary!
Alyth Bridge
Submitted by Oggie on
Path immediately under the Alyth (CPR) Bridge is flooded and barricaded. It is still possible, as of late this evening, to detour around the closed section and continue south to Ogden Road or north to 9 Avenue. Not sure of the status of Beaverdam Flats, I took Millican Road and 18 Street instead of continuing along the pathway.
Beaverdam Flats
Submitted by Bluhrgirl on
Beaverdam is gated closed, stick to 18th. Ogden Road is not the most comfortable to ride, but is good work-around under Bonneybrook/Alyth. I promise you will not be the only cyclist out there, as a lot of us never went back after the delayed construction on Sanctuary segment of path.
Pathways under water

... here's a video I took yesterday. At its deepest, the water was mid-shin, on the crank downstroke:

Boy you really need to know the path ahead of time for some of those sections by the look of it.

Wow, couldn't cycle that distance with large sections underwater. You pretty well have to memorize every bump, dip to know that route to deal with submerged path sections.
Your other video on Bike to work Day commute ride to Eau Claire this year, I found latter section useful...just to show family members (in Toronto) what Calgary looks like...the video does highlight ..the flat prairie from a bike saddle.
If anything your commuter route bike videos show um..low density sprawl of Calgary while on the bike paths/routes..well in a slightly nicer way..under the glow of sunrise.
You do this ride in winter @-25 to -30 degrees C? Geez I couldn't those areas daily in super cold temps. with all that expanse of openness in very cold air and winds sweeping along.
Lots of water

I recognized parts of that watery ride. The water seems higher this year than since that big flood (2005?). Anyone know when the Bow River will be cresting within the city of Calgary?
City website finally has more

City website finally has more specific closure info at http://www.calgary.ca/CSPS/Parks/Pages/Pathways/Pathway-closures.aspx
Flooding closures All low-lying sections of pathways along the Bow River and Elbow River are closed due to high water levels.Bow River:
Elbow River - all pathway underpasses
Please follow and obey all closure signage.
Glad to see the detail
Submitted by DarrenB on
Glad to see the City responded so quickly to add the detail. I don't know many of the routes well/at all, but superficially some seem like critical links in the pathway/off-street cycling network. I wonder if adding some redundancy might be worth some thought in the future? It would be great to hear from people who use these routes and live nearby so that we can start a list of key needs for redundant routes to mitigate seasonal closures like this. I am not sure such thinking is on the radar of Parks given that they don't have a transportation perspective. Perhaps Bike Calgary could help in this respect with some suggestions.
Zoo area update?
Submitted by bike-run on
I have to go from the Albert Park area west on the Bow pathway tonight, to drop off my car and ride home.
I can't tell from the City's list how much of my route is affected:
After crossing Deerfoot trail, is the pathway under the (railway?) bridge near the weir accessible?
I don't know a way through if it's not. Are there any other options?
Also, is the path along the river by the Zoo clear yet?
thanks.

Centre Street

The northside path at Centre Street was open but had (shallow) water the whole way accross this morning.

It would be swimming now. They're all closed as far as the Zoo bridge. (Actually, the centre street one is still passable, but closed).
The zoo section is flooded.... again...
Submitted by rustabout1981 on
The zoo section was deeper than ever this morning. Unfortunately I was late for work already and did't have time to double back. Finding a detour is highly recommended.
lots of water
Submitted by critninja on
Diamond Cove area near the bridge is completely closed although there is a single rack around.
The path on west side of the river under Deerfoot near Lafarge plant is closed.
Beaver Dam flats is closed.
The Zoo path is closed and has fast flowing water that is up to your knees - I know, I rode "upstream" in it yesterday and almost didnt make it out.
Careful out there folks.
Immersion
Submitted by InglewoodGuy on
I've always wondered, how bad is it for the bottom bracket, hubs, derailleur etc to be submerged in situations such as this? OK for a short time?
I love an Adventure...
Submitted by chaingunsofdoom on
First ride of year for me in from McKenzie. An extra 8 KM was not the best situation. :)
As mentioned West side of river near Diamond Cove is flooded. Did not want to double-back 5 more KM, so I drove thru to the Sue Higgins bridge from the south. Water up past hub and shoes wet.
On east side of river just before the Driving Range, there's around a 25ft section with foot deep water. After that, it is good thru to Quarry Park where I took the detour to the street and hung a left on the freshly paved road.
At dog park, crossed over to the west side and it was good up to Heritage Drive. Cars cannot turn right since road is closed, but path is dry, so I took the Glenmore bridge over to the hill.
Stayed on the ridge until the apartments and then streeted over to Ogden Road and used the pathway to the Alyth section. The CP section is majorly flooded, but the cement barriers under the bridge are open and dry. That new section all the way to 9th was normal.

"Its worth mentioning closures in Fish Creek as well - as of last night, the pathway on the east side of the Bow between 22X and McKenzie is closed, as well as the pathway north of the creek and south of the Acadia Drive entrance. (there may be more closures that I didn't find)"
Thanks

That was my comment!
I should have mentioned that I was on my road bike and sticking to the paved paths - I wouldn't even want to start listing shale and gravel paths that are underwater.
