Proposed 9th Ave SE Bike Lane updates

I found these links on another website (SSP) so I am not sure how definite they are. http://www.calgary.ca/Transportation...ontext-map.pdf http://www.calgary.ca/_layouts/cocis...f&noredirect=1 It looks like the city is going to address the "bike lanes to nowhere" that begin and end on 9th Ave SE at 6th St. There is now a proposed continuation of the lanes from 6th St E to the bridge over the Elbow river. So far so good, it looks like there will be a loss of the right most east bound traffic lane that exited to 7th St SE southbound to the bus barns. Where I am starting to have concerns is that it appears that the sidewalks on both the north side and the south side of the bridge are to be used as part of the bike way for E/W traffic on 9th Ave. Bike ramps are shown to jump up onto the side walk from the terminating bike lane at the bridge in both directions. I dislike this as there are tons of pedestrians on the north side sidewalk usually and it leads to a big slow down and interactions. The bike ramp on the west bound lane is just in front of the Deane House and right before an essentially blind corner (due to trees) where the MUP comes to the bridge. If you are going street speed it is going to require a huge slow down to cross the bridge safely per this proposed arrangement. The transition off the bridge into the new bike lane in front of Ft Calgary on the west bound route looks reasonable, but again you could be interacting with east bound pedestrian traffic as you cross their path. The transition off the east bound route over the bridge is a mystery to me. It looks like they bring the pathway to the corner of 8th St. Not an ideal place to rejoin traffic flow as you risk being hit by traffic turning right onto south bound 8th St SE. Another area where there could be difficulty is the right turn from 7th St SE to eastbound 9th. This has poor sightlines as it is and I forsee drivers having to nose out in the bike lane to see if they can make a safe turn. The other wild card in all of this is potential addition of a new pathway bridge over the Elbow where it meets the Bow, essentially tying the MUP at Ft Calgary (and Riverwalk) to the Inglewood MUP. Hopefully this would take some of pressure off this proposed 9th Ave route and take some of the slower bike/ped traffic onto it's own river crossing. The 9th Ave bridge is a choke point for all traffic into Inglewood and beyond on the 9th Ave corridor. I understand what the city is trying to achieve with these changes and it would be ideal to have a E/W express of bike lanes on this corridor into and out of downtown. I just have reservations about using the sidewalks on the bridge to achieve this. But the alternative of losing one of the three traffic lanes on the bridge to create new bike lanes would probably cause an even bigger uproar than the new bike/bus lanes through Inglewood. Sorry for the long exposition, just a topic near and dear to my heart.

Does the bridge need 3 lanes?

If one lane is enough inbound to DT, why are two lanes needed heading into Inglewood? If they allocated one lane on the bridge (in halves) for bike lanes, they could still have the east bound roadway go back to two lanes after the bridge and heading up to the traffic lights.

more sidewalk bike lanes

Stupid and dangerous. They want 30+km/h bike traffic "merging" onto the bridge sidewalk?! It seems most prudent to cut it down to two vehicle lanes and one bike lane each direction as winterrider already suggested.

An additional minus for this plan is that the eastbound bike lane will nearly always be blocked by any vehicles trying to make a right onto 9th.

I have to agree - no way I'd

I have to agree - no way I'd merge onto that sidewalk on my commute. Too many pedestrians. The bike lane should just go through on the bridge. Car traffic has to go to 1 lane during peak times on 9th anyway, might as well reduce it before the bridge.

As for the peak hour bike/bus lanes, to me it makes more sense to use bidirectional lanes. with the red X lights above the lanes depending on time of day. Have 1 lane for opposing flow traffic, 2 lanes for rush hour traffic, 1 lane for bike/bus. I bet they'd see a higher compliance rate if they did that too. Right now many drivers ignore the bike/bus lane signs, despite police presence.

Agree, sidewalks are for pedestrians

Popping onto a pedestrian-filled sidewalk and either riding slowly, or walking your bike - then getting back on the road - makes no sense. Riders who are comfortable will continue across the bridge with traffic, riders who aren't confident will simply not bike.

Saw these were painted-in

Saw these were painted-in today (first ride for me in a while). By Fort Calgary into downtown, the added bonus of a 305(?) double-length bus stopped in the bike lane kept me on the sidewalk this AM.

Is Sidewalk riding not illegal?

I've always wondered why the city seems to force cylists to merge onto sidewalks, cross major intersections at corsswalks/sidewalks, etc. when riding on a sidewalk is illegal.

Always thought it would be funny if drivers had to get out and push their cars across intersections with other transportation options (such as railroad tracks). It would cut down on the number of SUV's and trucks on the roads though.

Thanks, but no thanks

Thanks for the effort City of Calgary, but merging bike traffic onto a sidewalk will cause more problems. Now that its signed and painted drivers will expect cyclist to use the sidewalk. No thanks, cycling on the road (or bidge in this case) is my preference and not illegal.

Merging onto sidewalk is unsafe

Really busy pedestrian area and the supports on that bridge are right in the pathway.  They've just created another conflict because now there are going to be sidewalk cyclist merging into the road cyclist at the ramps.

Should have just ended the on-street infrastructure at 6th St SE until the new bridge is done.

Agreeeeeeeed

Tried the lanes this morning and agree with everyone who has posted above. I come in from the north side of 9th on 6th St. SE so dismounting to cross 9th (unlike SOMEONE who blasted by me in a crosswalk today), the awkward merge onto the ped bridge, and then the condition of the roads along 9th past 7th St. SE (is that just me or are they terrible?!)... it's more trouble than it's worth. I'll stick to the paths along the river.

Poor City of Calgary, at least they're trying!

Sidewalk Entrance?

So I couldn't help noticing the WB sidewalk "pathway" entrance seems to be angled wrong... they had barricades around it and I was merging into road traffic, so I may be wrong. But then, I also noticed they have a very thin triangle to let you merge back into the new bike lane after the bridge, and again to me it looks like the angle would have you almost needing to come into traffic lane before you could adjust into straight lane. All supposition so for, but that looks far less dangerous than my current merge into the single lane is now. Do we really need traffic calming for bikes on a commute?
