off-leash areas under review

hi all

the city is currently reviewing policy pertaining to off-leash areas in calgary and have a survey available at - http://content.calgary.ca/CCA/City+Hall/Business+Units/Animal+and+Bylaw+...

many of us have to ride through or near off-leash areas and i know that i have had my fair share of run-ins with off-leash dogs, owners who are not in control of their dog, or being chased by dogs.

if any of this pertains to you, go to the survey and let the city now how you feel.

i am not a dog owner now, but have been in the past, and think that there are a few areas in the city where there are some serious pathway/off-leash conflict zones. maybe through this survey we can let the city know that commuter cycling could be affected by any changes that are made in the future - and maybe they could be positive changes.

there is an offleash park a few blocks away from my house, and the people who drive there are ridiculous. Only place when riding im worried about getting struck by a door, or possibly even some stuck up cunt with their dog walking out on the road.

I will gladly fill out this survey.
Why can't people just walk their dogs in the park like normal people, and if they do, remain in control of the dog (ie not having the dog go in the oncoming lane)

Thanks for posting this I am

Thanks for posting this I am glad that I could participate in the survey, not that it will make a big difference, but every voice does add up. I feel safer riding on Barlow than any off leash area, unfortunately responsible dog owners are of a rare breed.

Off leash parks have created

Off leash parks have created some of the worst users of parks in the city. Off-leash parks create the illusion that they are for dog owners only or that they are the primary or most important user of that park. It's bad enough to have the occasional old lady tell me I'm trying to kill her by riding within 40 feet of her, but dog owners yelling at me on a weekly basis during the summer and fall as if Calgary's parks are theirs alone is getting ridiculous.

Rare breed? No, anon, they are extinct.

Dog owner

I guess I sit on both sides of this argument... Being the owner of a staffish terrier (Pitbull for the ignorant), I rely on off leash dog parks to keep my dog fit and socialized! I agree with Swank that there are some crazy people who drive there dogs to these parks ,especially if its cold, and fling their doors open without looking, or cross the street without leash's on expecting no cars. Even the crazy old ladies that get scared too easy, but these things should be expected everywhere on the path not just in the park. My most frequented park that I commute through would be the center st hill one. In the summer I guarantee there will be at least a dozen dogs and owners in the park after 3pm. That is why the speed limit is 20 on the path, so you can avoid all those crazy obstacles ie; people, animals, cracks, floods, ice, and bums. That's why I don't take the path if the roads are nice.

I take pride in knowing I have an obedient, loving, and easygoing dog. If I'm letting my dog out for her walk, she knows that she has to share the park. I let her have fun, which means running and chasing and playing, as long as it's within the bounds of the park.

If anyone needs a good street route I am more than happy to recommend what I think would be your fastest and safest route. I know mostly north to 64th Ave North, from 20th street west to 26th street east but I'm always biking.
