How was your ride today? Week of March 16th

There was some weird ice fog/mist this morning. It didn't collect on my glasses, but I could feel it on my cheeks. Not really slippery on the roads today, although I still take it easy around corners. My brakes were wet and squealing all the way in...

Not slippery?

Maybe roads were fine, but the bike path was quite slick with the frost over frozen puddles. I saw quite a few patches where some unfortunate person had hit the ground.

This morning I was glad I still have my studs mounted.

Is spring sprung?

It's less than a week 'til the official start to spring and after only riding four times since the "Big Snow" of Dec 12, the bike got tuned-up over the weekend and I am ready for another three seasons of everyday biking.
Roadways not slippery, but messy brown snow. Pathway slippery with frozen puddles.
Worst hazard is all the build-up of garbage from over the winter. (Oh yeah and the coughing up of a lung, cause I am not use to the physical activity!!)

Nice Morning

Great to be out again after a longish bout with the flu. Had the pleasure of being able to ride with Cword who was nice enough to wait for me on the hills :-)

Avast, ye studs of yore

I put the studs away a month ago (and promptly left the country for three weeks, missing all that nasty -25C stuff you all "enjoyed" a fortnight ago. On my return this past weekend, I was delighted to find mostly bare roads. True, in places there are lots of freeze-melt ice rinks, but with a steady hand, and foot, these are easily crossed. With the first day of spring arriving this weekend (right in time for the Bike Root grand opening at the U of C), I'm betting I won't need to drag out the studs any more until next winter. Well, are ya feeling lucky, punk?

Too confident..

I loved the ride today.

Less ice on the path compared to yesterday, but man now we have to watch for loose gravel. Can't quite take corners at a fast pace just yet? LOL No damage, but maybe I impressed some of the drivers with my one foot control. I am sure that is why they were honking? LOL

Still have to be aware of the winter hazards on the roads and paths.

Off to Edmonchuck tomorrow, but back at it again on Thursday and hopefully even less ice.

Snows when I put my slicks on

The past 2 Saturdays, I've put my slicks on, only to have it snow the next day. So for the last 2 weeks I've been running a slick on the rear and studded on the front, for traction on those frozen puddles. The forecast looks good, so I'm going to take a chance on screwing the weather up for everyone by putting my front slick on tonight. If there's a foot of snow in the morning, you guys will know who to blame.

Single track is getting soft and sticky;

My route has me taking about 1K beside Country Hills Blvd which is unpaved, uphill (in the morning) and dirt (now mud) single track. I am glad I have showers at work as I really need them now.

While in Edmonton yesterday I witnessed that their bike lanes are not much better than Calgary's. I thought that they were further advanced than Calgary for Bike infrastructure? I followed a bike commuter from the Grant McEwen Campus just north of downtown to the High Level Bridge and he had three near misses, as drivers don't seem to pay attention to the "Share the Road" sign. I have a picture, but it is directly into the sun and is silhouettes only.
