Sunday's snowfall is the price we pay for good winter cycling conditions. Really, there are only a few days in each winter with more than 5 cm of snow on the ground... and this Sunday wasn't one of them, because it's spring now! Yes, we get most of our snow in the spring. Don't be surprised if we get another dump in April, or even May. And while you're struggling to work, remember.... this is making the farmers happy!

Friday after work, I rushed home, grabbed a water bottle and headed out for a quick road ride. Despite the fact that I was on the SS, I felt pretty strong and made good time. I thought, "YES, finally!". The speed was exhilarating...
Today I pulled off to the side of the road and waved a car past me. Oh, the humiliation. I even tweaked my back yesterday while shovelling the heavy wet snow from my sidewalk. The first km or so of today's commute felt like an unseen hand was grabbing my spinal cord with a pair of rusty salad forks and using it to give me an internal wedgie.

The bow river path appears to have been cleared Sunday afternoon, and it is in great shape. Looks like they did the bowmont park section later and it would make a great luge run.
I'm not complaining, really, I LOVE winter!

was not too bad this morning - the ice must have sublimed away.
Once the weather warms up again and the snow begins melting, I know we'll have lots of ice! I especially enjoy the long off-camber part off the path just north of the 52nd street ridge (by the Refored Church).

My recollection is that its been significantly earlier (early April?) the last couple of years.
Last year I had a nice crash on the ice coming down the hill on Crescent Drive SW, then another guy slid on the ice and crashed into me on the Mission bridge while I was stopped chatting to the volunteer.
I hope the later date will attract more riders.

I think my wife has officially had it with winter. On the ride in today, I heard cursing that would make a rig worker cringe. If there is an offensive word that you know, my wife spoke it this morning. Actually, she yelled them at the top of her lungs. At one point, I'm pretty sure she tore a hole in the space-time continuum with her salty language. If you happen to be on 25 St. S.W. and there is a dark-matter vortex sucking things in, let me know and I'll call 311 and get it taken care of.
Other than that, the ride was okay, if a bit challenging.

Aside from a couple of white-knuckle I-know-there's-an-icy-rut-waiting-under-the-snow-to-take-me-out moments, things went pretty smooth on the ride in.

This mornings ride reminded me why I like winter riding. Not too icy, not too windy or cold, the light snow muffling the sound of traffic. Here's hoping this weather lasts till July!

Yeah, nice riding today, just too bad I took my studs off last week. Friday night actually after all that nice weather we had and then Saturday came the big dump and it iced up again. Oh well, just have to be careful for a while longer.
The slush is on its way though, we'll see if the seat on my shell pants is still water proof.

I completely blanked on what -16C meant as I started off on my way to work today. Normally, I'd wear a heavier jacket, but I forgot. 2 minutes away from the house I'm thinking, "Oh yeah - -16C". Sigh. I'm very tired today, but I don't know why. The ride in was fine, and the icebergs on the road are clearly visible. I'll be happy to have warmer temps starting on the weekend.

A generally pleasant ride in this morning, other than a douche in a pickup truck driving almost a block on the wrong side of the road to get around us. We caught him 1/2 a block later anyway, then passed him at the bottom of the hill. GAF 983 - looked like a recent model Ford, charcoal grey.
Traffic volume was low through downtown. I even had my own lane for a while.

Wind from the West at 30 km/hr, with Gusts (Hmmm, that sounds like crusing speed to me). Expect to cruise at speeds 10% to 20% higher than normal, and expect to BLAAAASST the straightaways on Memorial and by the river at speeds between 35 km/hr and 40 km/hr. Watch for the occasional icy patch, which should disappear sometime soon!
Expect to accomplish very little at work today because you will be anticipating the ride home in the warm sunshine. Go buy some shorts at lunchtime! And maybe a new pair of sunglasses, too, to celebrate spring. MEC has a bunch of new Bolle's......
