Fenders

Fenders...who uses them? I guess if you commute in winter they are great. Calgary is pretty dry though. Who uses Fenders? I have and took them off because I rarely needed them.

Forums:

because of June

We usually get 90mm of rain in June. It's our rainiest month. This is the month that makes fenders worth it for me. That, and the shoulder months where you get freezing slush flung up on your clothes if you don't have 'em. But those who are fair-weather riders sure wouldn't need them, and you can get in a lot of riding and never need them.

Sprinklers...

I use fenders.

There are a lot of properties lining my commute that run their automatic sprinklers for too long or sweep their nozzles past the edge of the grass. The road winds up wet and the bike paths wind up completely soaked. Some spots are soaked like this every day in summer.

Plus, it always seems there's someone around whose decided to use their new power-wand to hose down their driveway and they've chased all the dirt out into the middle of the road.

About the only time I won't encounter a single puddle on my commute is when the city has started issuing fines because the reservoir is low.

yes

It might be nice to take them off sometimes in the summer, but whenever I do there ends up being thundershowers or something. Plus I'm lazy, so they stay on most of the time...

Yes to fenders

...for the exact same reasoning as "mikewarren."
A couple of the stays broke earlier this year and I jimmied a repair that lasted until last week when I was forced to remove them completely. But with the over-watering as mentioned by "scwood" and the rain yesterday, I was soaked last evening, so I am looking for new fenders or hopefully just replacement stays.

Downtube Freezeups

I thought of a front fender for those days when it's close to freezing and the slush freezes on my BB, and on the cables for the the rear brake and derailluere, but fenders don't protect you enough.

I've thought of trying to make a shroud out of a kokanee mountain size can, but never got around to it.

If I ever do, I'll post a picture of it.

Cheers

no fenders

I am a no fender rider year round just cuz I got no clue how to put them on! of course in the rainy season you don't want to know just how far the road dirt gets to.....no matter what I wear.

Just Never used them.

I can fully understand Fenders but I've never used them. I have a rear rack so that keeps me from being "skunky". I've ridden, commuted, toured etc. in all sorts of weather but just never put on fenders. The biggest benefit I can see is for my feet when it is cold and wet, they'd at least fare a bit better but wearing booties takes care of that for the most part.

I guess this is another one of those "personal choices".

Try them, you might like them

" ...I guess this is another one of those "personal choices"..."

If I may make a suggestion: you should try both options and then make your choice. Of course, you can do as you please, but GOOD fenders make a big difference in wet weather. I've used the clip on Zefals and the full coverage Planet Bikes - the full coverage fenders are much better.

rear racks as fenders

I see many people on the pathway using their rear rack as a fender. Its better than nothing, but I still see the tell tale trail of road grime on their backs. It just starts a little higher.

<3 Fenders

I have a beach cruiser so my fenders are just part of the visual appeal for me, I wasnt going to settle for a bike without them, personally I love the look of fenders on all bikes. However, I sure am extra fond of them, especially the last few days when I see layers of mud all over my bike, but none on my clothes.
