Cameraman on Zoo pathway

The ride south down the Nose Creek Pathway and then west from the Zoo to downtown was fairly typical, except for the CTV camerman who was dangerously located near this morning's accident location. I dinged going around that blind corner and almost startled the fellow as I came up the hill.

That blind corner needs to be changed. I have narrowly missed other riders as they speed through the corner into my lane.

No one goes 20 kph on any pathways in Calgary. The city needs to upgrade the path system to accomodate more riders and speeds upwards to 35 kph.

Be cautious, folks!

Sounds just like drivers

Are you a dreamer or out of this planet Cword? If they bump the speed limit to 135 kph people will drive 160! If you think I am wrong check any speed limit zone - 60 or 80 or whatever. Most of us tend to drive above the limit regardless.

Pathways or Commute ways?

20KPH is TOO SLOW for commuting. It is fine when I'm out with the family on the weekends relaxing. When I commute I do so to get from point A to point B.

Of course right now I'm too fat to keep a decent speed up but even so, I normally ride in excess of 20KPH on level ground.

Foggy and no lights

Fog engulfed me along Country Hills Blvd this AM. Without lights I was likely not very noticeable out there. I did have my lights in my panniers as I discovered when I got unpacked at the office. Next time I will stop and look for them, instead of being so risky.

fully decked out in rain gear

Was fully decked out in rain gear and heavy clothes this morning, expecting rain/snow as Environment Canada suggested last night. I ended up sweating buckets all the way to work!

For the first time, I took my single-speed (48x20) from Crowfoot to work in the north east (28 st NE x 14 ave NE). I thought I'd be completely physically destroyed, but I actually got to work around the same timeframe (maybe 2 mins slower?) and my legs aren't feeling any soreness.

Riding buddy

I rode in this morning with my wife for the first time in a couple of weeks. She's been doing well in my absence, getting a lot more assertive. I hung at the back of the ridiculously long line of traffic on 4 St. this morning while she zipped up on the right and slid in behind a taxi. I thought to myself "Well, THAT was easy", so off I went. Inevitably, I got squeezed out by a white BMW, but another cyclist rode by us both in the gutter and made it almost to the front of the line. By that time, the light had been green for a while and we started moving. I passed the gutter-rider, dialled it up to 400W, changed lanes on the far side of 10 Ave and had clear sailing right through to 4 Ave.

Yesterday I rode to a bike polo game in Hillhurst from my home in Bridgeland. As I pulled onto the bikepath at the Langevin Bridge, a guy on a bright-red Specialized road bike came up out of the bridge underpass. "Mind if I draft you?", I asked, and pulled in behind him on my fixed-gear bike, just to see what the ride would be like. Pretty soon my pedals were flying as I struggled to keep up with him. I reckon he was doing easily over 30km/h (and me too, following behind). As we got close to the Prince's Island bridge I backed off, thinking for sure he would also slow down in this constricted spot, but no, he just booted it right through there even though there were peds on the path. I guess he didn't want to have to change gears...

C'mon people, there are not many spots on the pathway where you need to slow down, but the bridge intersections are definitely one of them. They're posted 10 km/h for a reason.

10th Ave

There was a huge crane that had shutdown 10th Ave this morning. It was great riding there with no cars. It was so quiet and it's nice not having to look over my shoulder or guess who will cut into the right hand lane at any moment.

The lair of the Google cam

The lair of the google cam on TwitpicI rode out from downtown to Bow Cycle after work to pick up my wife's bike that had been serviced, then ferried it back to Bridgeland. Riding back with 2 bikes took only 5 minutes longer than riding out with only one, unless I measured the time wrong.

As I rode through Bowness I suddenly spotted a familiar sight: the Google StreetView camera car that I'd seen downtown a couple weeks ago. Same Ontario licence plates, yep. I had discovered the lair of the Google cam!

Looks like the person they've contracted to do the street-view pictures of Calgary is living right there in Bowness. So if you're commuting one block south of Bowness Road in the next few days, stop by and check out the technology on that car.

Yes, I've seen that car a couple of times this week in the NE.

This morning it came out of the Deerfoot Mall parking lot. After my morning sprint on 64th Ave I tried to not look like a panting dog...not sure how successful I was :)

I got cut off by a motor

I got cut off by a motor cycle tonight. I figured the one group of vehicles that does have a heavy presence on the roads and whom get a lot of press regarding drivers being vigilant of motor cycles would be more considerate. I was stopped on 37th street at Glenmore trail. I decided to stay in the queue and took my spot on the right hand side of the lane. The motor cycle pulled up along side of me, in my opinion no harm no foul. When the light turned green I started rolling/ accelerating while the bike was fiddling with the gears (I recall hearing grinding adn clicking from him). Then I heard him spool it up and was expecting to have him pass me and fill the widening gap between me and the car in front. Well he did, swerved in front of me hit the brakes and made a swift right turn into the plaza on the east side of 37th street. I avoided rear ending bit my lip and hammered as hard as I could just in case there was a stunned car behind me. Short of that though what a great night to be on a bike.

Yikes, that sounds terrifying Scott!

I found this week to be a really awesome week to commute! The weather was beautiful and I saw a few goslings along the river which made me smile...even though they were on the path. I hated to think someone might take a corner too fast and accidentally take out a gosling. Almost got poo'd on by a flock of birds too! Not thrilled by that, haha. The wind the last 2 days coming in to downtown was a little tough on me and my heavy 1 speed cruiser, but I made it with maybe a little extra leg muscle gained? Let's hope. I hope it's a nice weekend and a nice commute next week!

For the winter mornings that I prayed / wished / begged for a reprieve from the cold, the snow drifts and the oppressive dark: this morning's weather is what I was dreaming about. Hurray for summer biking!

Now if only something could be done about the number of roadway detours that appear in summer...boo.
