Ok folks, here is a weekly forum spot to complain, compliment or otherwise comment on path and road conditions you encounter during the week. At the end of the week I will forward this thread to the City for their review.
Hopefully having all the comments in one thread will make for more efficient communication of the commuting conditions faced by commuter cyclists in Calgary.
Me first...nothing to report - yet. I was digging up my lawn all weekend!

First complaint of the week

Here's the first complaint of the week. Heritage Park has placed an object on the pathway that is designed to injure or maim pathway users. See this thread.
Seconded

I second, third, and fourth 'ride's' complaint. The bike rack on the pathway is ridiculous for many reasons, but the most is the injury potential, especially at night time. Hopefully the city can review this installation and find a better place for these bike racks. Great to see more racks added anywhere though.
went through there yesterday

what a disaster! not just the bike racks on the pathway, all of it. bollards everywhere, multiple road crossings, tight corners - brutal!
i do think the solution is simple though -
1 - remove the yellow line on the path that leads to the bike racks
2 - more importantly, the regional pathway should exit off of the path around the reservoir just east of where it exits now and should run through the parking lot north and west to where the existing path continues through to the residential area.
3 - install new signage to indicate the "new" route.
4 - paint "bike sharrows" in the parking lot along the "new" route
this would eliminate (or reduce) many of the possible bike/ped confrontations in the area close to the new development and provide a quicker and safer way to navigate through that area.
as it is right now, i would expect there to be many collisions/near misses going forward.
have a great weekend!
26th Ave SW
Submitted by critninja on
this road is suppose to have "painted bike lanes" from 37th st sw east to crowchild trail. currently, there are NO LINES OF ANY KIND! no centre line, worn off bike lane lines, and worn off bike sharrows.
i wonder when the city is planning on repainting this section?
as well, the bike sharrows that were painted on the road on 26th ave sw west from 37th st sw to sarcee trail are worn off.
Fort Calgary

Looks like construction will once again screw up the route around the Fort Calgary site. I saw some construction workers plastering signs up that they would be shutting down a section of the path system again this spring to add to the mess that they have not cleaned up from last year...I will try to read the sign a little more carefully this week and should I remember I will add some more details.
thanks for the heads-up!

if possible, try and post a picture or provide some more details on the specifics of the closure - as well as the proposed detour.
cheers!
Riverwalk

This is the project - RiverWalk

That website is mostly promotional goo, I couldn't find any specifics on the City website as to the specifics of detours, etc.
West Campus Blvd and Hospital Dr. NW
Submitted by Cword on
If you're using the path behind Foothills Hospital be aware of an asphalt patch that has deteriorated and now presents a hazard on the pathway.

Now marked
Submitted by Cword on
Yesterday this cut out got marked in white spray paint. The peak of the triangular cut out is now tagged white.
Looks like a repair is in it's future.
marked for repair

Hopefully it gets repaired before a cyclist has to be.
Repair Complete

As of 26 May this hazard has been repaired!
Photographed from a different angle for entertainments sake.
Kudos to the city for quick action on this one!

3-1-1 Success Story

I dialed in a complaint on the website about a broken sewer grate on Silver Springs Blvd last Friday ( areal tire grabber!) and .......
TADA! it got fixed yesterday
Today I'm gonna do another one for the pothole halfway down the hill on Home Road and see how long that takes .....
Cheers
Huzzah!

I think sewer grates rate high on the priority list. The city has publicly recognized the danger of sewer grates to cyclists and has made a point of mentioning their change to 'tire friendly' grates - the ones where the slats are diagonal and not straight across the grate.
Good luck on the pothole :)
I added another 3-1-1 request

I added another 3-1-1 request to the pothole.
One of the walkways in my neighborhood has one of those criss-cross "rap your knuckle or your knee" kind of gates, so I asked for a bollard. I'll let you know how that goes.
As for the grate - good riddance! The hole in it was 3" across - enough to grab even a DH tire.
Cheers
