Ric McIver, a member of the Calgary tour de nuit Society and the former Calgary city alderman who put the cycling issue on the public agenda, (where it remains to this day) has been appointed Minister of Transportation for the Government of Alberta. Mr. McIver, a Progressive Conservative, was one of three CtdnS members running in the provincial election, the others were: former leader of the Liberal Party and Official Opposition, David Swann and Al Brown of the New Democratic Party.
Ric is married to Christine McIver, who as Executive Director of the Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta organizes the elite bike fundraiser, Tour for Kids Alberta. The cycling power couple will be on the 'Ride the Road' tour, Sunday June 3, 2012.
It is uncertain the degree to which Ric's extraordinary support for commuter cycling factored into the Premier's decision to appoint him to this portfolio.
