bikes on Shaganappi Trail

I have been searching around in the Alberta traffic laws and on the city's web site but I can't seem to find anything on this topic.

I was wondering if bikes are allowed on Shaganappi Trail (or any other major road where the speed limit is quite high)?  I saw someone slowly riding up Shaganappi yesterday and it started me wondering if it is legal for a bike to go so slow on a road that has a posted speed limit of 70 kph.  I know that there are laws governing slow moving motor vehicles but do they apply to bikes?

Thanks.

They Are

There are only 2 roads in Calgary where you can't ride bikes - Stephen Avenue Mall (during working hours when cars aren't) and Deerfoot. I don't think bikes are expected to go the speed limits on any roads because at time going 50km can even be a challenge.

Yup

What he said.

Now, whether riding your bike on these high speed roads is smart is another topic entirely. :)

Fun ride downhill

One time I took Shaganappi from the top of Nose Hill Park through to the pathway - probably the fastest I've ever gone on a bike. It was Sunday afternoon, traffic was light, and I was moving with it. I'm fairly certain I'd never be caught dead doing that route uphill though... too much of a difference between bikes and cars is a recipe for dangerous roads. Would be great to see a parallel MUP like other high speed roads (14th St on the east side of Nose Hill).

night is your friend

Roads like Shaganappi or Sarcee are great at night, especially downhill -- limited traffic, usually calmer winds and people usually wonder what they hell those two or three flashing lights ahead are and slow down a little.
