Hello BC folks,
Yes, we’ve had ‘event’ bike racks previously. They have been our ‘long pipe racks’ built and maintained by other volunteers and me over the past ~ 14 years.
There will be 50 (fifty!) upscale ‘event’ racks forthcoming when they find their way out of the galvanizing shop.
Our Folk Festival Bicycle Lock-Up cage will host the debut of the FIRST of these 50 racks. Here’s the sign I’ll post on this single rack (for demo purposes):
This rack represents a new era in City of Calgary’s provision for bicycling infrastructure and its promotion of non-single occupant motor vehicle transportation modes.
It is one of 50 (fifty) forthcoming ‘event’ racks that you will see at future Folk Festivals as well as other community festivals around the City.
The ‘event bike rack’ program was one of the key actions identified in the June 2011 Council approved Comprehensive Cycling Strategy enthusiastically supported by Calgary’s bicycling community including Bike Calgary, an overarching coalition of bicycling interest groups.
Clipped from page 8 of the Strategy: “C41 Purchase temporary bicycle racks to set up at festivals and events around Calgary to encourage people to cycle.”
Congratulations to The City of Calgary’s Transportation Solutions Group and Calgary Recreation’s Arts and Culture Production Services crew for bringing this dream to reality!
Particular thanks goes to Debbie Mah, Transportation Solutions Group (off on well-deserved holidays at present) for having the resolve to make this happen.
Visit our Folk Festival Bicycle Lock-Up from today until take-down on Monday (30 July) morning to check out more bikes than your have EVER seen in one place in Calgary. It’ll make you feel you’re experiencing a normal occurrence in nearly any European city! Rain forecast for tomorrow / Friday. Expect lower Bike Cage usage. We’re located on Price’s Island Park, immediately W of the Island’s main N ó S through path, between the lagoon and river bike / ped bridges.

To clarify: this note comes from Bike Calgary director Jeff Gruttz, who's designed, built, and deployed those DIY bike racks. The amazing Laura and Chris Grant of Alberta Bike Swap have also contributed 30 of their signature orange racks to the FOlk Festival and previusly to Sled Island bike lockups. Big props!

At Mardi Gras today there were 3 racks, and by the end all were utilized! For events as wide spread as today's was, is it possible to get signage to put at entry points? I went around with chalk at locations where there were several bikes loaded into City of Calgary bike rack or chained to signs/trees or in one case, each other!
