Commuter Cycling Skills Program

Do you want to learn more about the rights and responsibilities of cyclists on the road?

Would you like to use almost any street in Calgary for your commute or daily trips by bike?

New dates added – June 29, July 20, and July 27

We believe anyone can learn to ride competently and confidently on Calgary roads, and we offer a fun and effective way to do so. Bike Calgary’s Commuter Cycling Skills program offers online training and instructor-led courses to improve your knowledge, cycling skills, and confidence with urban cycling.*

Bike Calgary has partnered with Cycling Canada’s national Can-Bike Program to deliver a one-day, instructor-led Commuter Cycling Skills course that will teach you the essential skills for safe and competent cycling on city roads, navigating everything from quiet residential streets to more challenging scenarios when sharing the road with downtown traffic. Our instructors are all nationally certified with Can-Bike, and we offer a low student-to-instructor ration (6-to-1 or less) so that you get lots of personalized instruction.

Our one-day Can-Bike courses run from 8:30 to 17:30 in the downtown area (including the CommunityWise Resource Center on 12th Ave in the Beltline, Eau Claire Market, or Hillhurst area, depending on space availability). Courses run the occasional Saturdays from June to September. Participants must be 18 years of age or older, although youths 14+ may attend if accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also participating in the course. Click here for the student checklist to prepare for the course.

As a special bonus, all participants who register for our one-day course will also receive access to free online training materials that will help make you a better urban cyclist. Much of this content has been created specifically for Calgary cyclists, providing a quick and easy way to educate yourself about rules of the road specific to Alberta and Calgary, as well as other Calgary-specific topics, such as how to use your bike on Calgary Transit or where to find resources for planning cycling routes in Calgary.

If you would like more information on our Commuter Cycling Skills program or our online training, don’t hesitate to contact us at training@bikecalgary.org.

If you are interested to enroll in our training, please click the button below to register on Bike Calgary’s EventBrite page. Based on the high demand in the past few years, we anticipate spots will be limited, so register early to secure the date that works best for you.

*Please note that our Commuter Cycling Skills training program is aimed at cyclists who are already comfortable riding a bike for moderate to long distances on city pathways or segregated bicycle infrastructure, but want to improve their skills and knowledge to feel confident riding in traffic. Unfortunately, we do not offer a learn-to-ride course for new cyclists, but we can put you in touch with qualified Can-Bike trainers, if you like (just contact us here with your request).
