Bow River Pathway Update: Inglewood Bird Sanctuary Reconnection Project

Infrastructure
A message from the City of Calgary: Work as part of the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary Reconnection project will resume again in early 2023. From January to April 2023, Bow River Pathway users may experience some delays between 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., on the 900m section of pathway south of 9 Avenue SE, adjacent to the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary.  Expect most delays to be 5 to 8 minutes, and the maximum delay would be 15 minutes. There will be flag personnel on site to direct pathway users and the construction equipment. For safety, we request that the cyclists follow the direction of the flag personnel.  These delays will allow construction vehicles to safely deliver materials for the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary Reconnection Project. This project will restore healthy ecosystems and habitats and…

The 2023-2026 Budget and a Win for Biking

Advocacy
The City of Calgary 2023-2026 Service Plans and Budget hearings kept cycling moving forward in Calgary. Many of the City’s planning documents point toward expanding the 5A network (Always Available for All Ages and Abilities) of walking and cycling routes, building safe active routes to schools, and closing gaps in the existing pathway system. Throughout 2022, Bike Calgary engaged with City Councillors and staff on these priorities–including guided cycle tours through most of the city’s 14 wards. However, in early November 2022, Calgary’s proposed four-year budget dedicated little if any funding to these critical projects. Bike Calgary sent an open letter to Council outlining our concerns with the budget. Then, at public hearings on November 22 and 23, City Council heard directly from dozens of community members that active transportation…

New Board Directors

Uncategorized
Bike Calgary is pleased to announce the re-election of Molli Bennett (President) to the Board of Directors, and to welcome three new board members: Volker Mendritzki, Brad Randall, and Leithan Slade. Molli’s continued leadership, and the addition of three new members to an expanded board, creates an incredible opportunity for Bike Calgary to build on its past work and grow in new directions. The 2022 Annual General Meeting saw members vote to increase the number of directors from seven to nine. This grew out of the need for Bike Calgary to have more consistent operational support. You can read all about the new board members here. Here are a few highlights on our new and re-elected members: Molli Bennett (she/her) is a lifelong Calgarian, year-round bike rider, and bicycle-focused educator…

2022 – 2024 Strategic Plan

Strategic Plan
“Making cycling better in Calgary.” That’s the focus for Bike Calgary’s 2022-2024 Strategic Plan. You can read the short-form or full strategic plan here, so we won’t summarize the whole thing in this post. Instead, let’s talk about why the strategic plan will help us achieve that goal. Bike Calgary is a volunteer-run organization, so a strategic plan with specific tasks helps us get the most impact out of the time we (and you) dedicate to our work. It establishes short-term actions to ensure long-term success. The 2022-2024 Strategic Plan includes four Strategic Objectives—items that guide our focus. Each of these objectives asks what will be done in the next six months to ensure success in the next three years. The four objectives connect Bike Calgary’s internal processes - governance…
