Volunteers Needed for Stephen Avenue Redesign Survey

Stephen Avenue is one of Calgary's most iconic, busiest, and recognizable streets. The stretch of 8th Avenue SW from Olympic Plaza to 11th Street SW is known for its retail spaces, restaurants, historic buildings, cultural spaces, cycling infrastructure, and top-notch people watching. The City of Calgary is undertaking a redesign of Stephen Avenue to maximize its potential and draw visitors above and beyond the downtown lunch crowd. The redesign process includes a survey of public space and public life on Stephen Avenue and the City of Calgary and Gehl and Urban Strategy are looking for volunteers to help collect survey responses. Do you wish you could make a few extra bucks during your commute? Well, the employees at WSP can do just that by choosing to ride their bike to work. With the goal of bringing together the multiple WSP offices and business lines as well as creating a community of sustainability and wellness, WSP believed that incorporating cycling in their employees’ daily commutes would be the perfect vehicle (pun intended). To jumpstart this initiative, they introduced some healthy competition and incentives. Colleagues track each others’ rides through leaderboards on the Strava app. As well, participants receive $0.10/km commuted by bicycle to-and-from work and three prizes of $150 are given out every month. Memorial Drive Bike Pathway Closures : April 1st – 20th

Starting on April 1st, the City of Calgary will be working on the Sunnyside Flood Barrier project. From April 1st - April 20th, there will be various closures of portions of the bike/shared path on the north side of the Bow River between Centre Street and 10th Street NW as the city collects data with respect to groundwater, ground conditions, and the current condition of the existing barriers.
