Awesome.
Do you ever record the rides?
This was supposed to be a “C to C Trail” from Calgary to Cochrane, opened on time for the Centennial all the way BACK IN 2015!!!!
It’s so insane to me that this has not happened yet. I was actually looking to purchase property in the new neighbourhoods because of the announcements, thinking that 2015 was going to be so sick for biking back and forth for like, yknow, Cochrane ice cream. But then not only did the communities take forever to get approved and started, the pathway never happened, and now it sounds like it’s mediocre and sucks.
So stupid. To be honest, I thought I was being rough on Calgary all these years for thinking its been “mediocre”, and describing things as such, but this one is definitely just… So mediocre. I expected a Calgary to Cochrane bike connection to the city-wide-greenway in 2015, but its now almost 10 years later.
Needless to say I did not even bother to keep up with the development news.
Speaking of taking a peek… It looks like the forums are still having some technical troubles! Where’d all those posts go? Half the ones I responded to in summer lost the first half of themselves. Sadly I don’t think the forums will pick up like they were in 2014-2016 without reliable tech.
I don’t think it was just that twitter was hip.
The Forums here had a long period of time just as bicycles were starting to really “pop off” in Calgary where the website could not be loaded, or it was outright down, and then they were upgrading these forums from the old tech to the new, and then another period of time where they didn’t work correctly.
Something like that will kill a forum very quickly.Gotta just keep posting though. Some of us still come by every few months to take a peek 🙂
my post isn’t showing up here D;
halp.
short version: google translate now translates pdfs!
Based on The Masterplan PDF: https://www.calgary.ca/content/dam/www/pda/pd/documents/main-streets/what-weve-learned/bowness-road-streetscape-masterplan.pdf
I ride around on “The West End” in the vod.I had forgotten all about this until I went out last fall for a little look-aroundsie and came across them putting some finishing touches in.
It was looking really good and I’m looking forward to checking out the completed project at some point.
I have a video of a small section of it here, timestamped to when I get on mainstreet
311 is definitely the place to register concerns, as even if they don’t do something right away the data point lets them revisit it in the future.
For situations like this, I think enforcement is hard and it boils down to better use. What I mean is that, if the route is populated with more walkers/joggers etc then they will naturally start expanding if there is no other use-case there as often. You see this growing pain a lot in, for example, American cities that make a wheel/heel lane over a bridge in the same manner as a Dutch city that has a wheel/heel lane over a bridge. The Dutch city has constant bicycle presence which reminds users of where they’re going to be, while the American city walkers get surprised by the bicycle actually showing up (and ringing a bell at them to get outta the bike lane).
So I guess the situation boils down to, is this ever going to be a high traffic route? Is the heel lane space big enough for their use-case? Is there infrastructure on either ends of the reservoir/connector paths confusing and reducing bicycle traffic? Do casuals not feel like it would be a good route for them to eventually wind up on naturally? etc. If none of that is a concern, maybe the route is just too new and still growing into its position.
Is there video or images of this route available somewhere?
I used to cross 3rd St via 3rd Ave but I don’t recall a bike route so it’s hard to picture. Does it connect all the way up to Barclay Parade? Not looking for a bike shop 2wheeler; I know they’ve been open as essential service. It’s on my ebike and for some reason nobody wants to touch the stromer even just for tires so I’ve got to take it down all the way to MEC. Wasn’t a fan of my last summer tires on it either so still humming and hawing if I want to order new ones. My Kona is ready to go though. Just bunker hidin’.
Still hiding in my bunker. Mainly because I want the bike shop to handle removing my gnarly winter tires/new ones. I’ll be the one riding my double studded tires in August whenever I get around to making that happen. Haha.
Glad to hear cycling is going big right now. Hopefully something good comes of it.
I think I might miss my studded tires once they’re gone. They announce me so well against the pavement that people often look back before I’m even in bell range. But I think I’ll change my mind if I buy some new tires and see how good they look and how smooth they ride. Think things will be a little too crazy in April to get that started though.
Maybe. I definitely remember better when I have a video archive and I have not been recording as much since swapping from backpack (where my gopro was mounted) to pannier. Been trying to think of a way to get the session5 on the front of my helmet without being weird or off balance but no luck.
That said the days I do remember were definitely just that one major day in November. I have some great clips from that because I pre-preemptively brought the camera knowing it wouldn’t get cleared well. 70% still is above average so we’re mostly in agreement 🙂
Fast forwarded a bit, right around here is where I get onto the bow river path and we get to watch some squirrely riding: https://youtu.be/aqn5ohFZ2eM?t=468With lights, I think those are people who saw the nice weather and came out to play a bit too early. Don’t think they put lights away, more that they never had them…
Here’s to another weekend of snow! Second winter! I’m staying indoors of course. Participating in all that self isolation goodness.
I thought this years plowing was really well done. It’s tough to manage when we get that week of -30 directly into +10 that solidified a lot of ice. I’d say it was A+ for 90% of winter, and it only got dodgy recently with the freeze thaw cycle.
So in total for me there was 1 day that was not plowed on time (it snowed all day and there was a foot of snow or more on the ride home). And about 1 week of icy conditions. The worst of it in Bowmont on “that” hill–apparently the bobcat also had troubles and spun out off the pathway and down the cliff. In case anyone was wondering what those snapped trees were about…
All in all very happy with it.Had my first “American” experience a few weeks ago with a black pickup truck rolling a CDN-1888 license plate. Was coming down 3rd which narrows a whole car width space past 2nd so I took the lane to discourage passing. This idiot comes blaring down at +60kmh from two blocks away, gets stuck behind me at a red light then starts honking and yells to get off the road when he can’t instantly pass me at the green. Wound up passing within a spitball length. Sucks because I haven’t updated my camera system on the new bike yet so the paint licker gets away with it. Hopefully the next time he does it he gets the sharp end of a gopro/police report and doesn’t send anyone to the hospital.
Enjoying the warmer weather a ton.
The site was offline for a long period of time. It takes a lot to regain traction once it’s lost. My recommendation would be to start writing some more in depth forum posts with length and photos, or discussing new areas of development with the same, as they’re not exactly easy to have on Twitter.
For example someone used to make a thread for each street discussion on revamps and routing possibilities regarding infrastructure.
Maybe you can start with a description of your winter riding gear? 😉
I was tempted to do a post for the cold snap this week, but unfortunately I’m sick and won’t be venturing out in the -30 this year. Bundle up, don’t have skin exposed. -
