Ooh… That’s a long closure. I was hoping to go over that way some time soon as I haven’t explored the east and south areas very much. Maybe I’ll go over just to see how they handle the closures.
Great to see the city cleared out the glacier. I rode through earlier this month and was surprised the glacier was still there, but there was a ton of foot traffic. Lots of walkers, runners, groups of people, strollers, bike commuters… So they probably got enough tickets to warrant bringing in the cat. I wonder if there’s a way we could design this thing better? I know we don’t want the glacier to freeze over the train tracks but I thought that was the purpose of the trench they dug around it. Prior to the pathway being build in the way, anyway. Don’t want to disturb the slope too much though I guess.
Today looks like it’ll be a great day. A bit of reprieve from the rainy season. Then back to the rain! It’s needed at least.
May 23, 2019 at 9:38 am in reply to: 12th Ave Cycle Track Improvements and Extension into Sunalta #8478Oh. Connection to the pathway system. That’s a big improvement. I don’t have much personal experience on this route but I hope the connection is done well. I’ll see about getting down that way a few times so I can contribute to the city page. Shame about the traffic control reversal, but I guess it was probably working a little too well? Unfortunately Calgary is still small in relation to some of these other cities that really need to control their traffic so it makes sense why people would have made a big guffaw over a reduction in traffic speed through the “thoroughfares.” Shame it’s seen that way but it is what it is.I can see trying to find the right balance.
Wish I could still remember where I found the study, but it’s been proven people react negatively to bike laws and improvements that “make sense” because of a strong us-vs-them mentality and anything that’s not a benefit to them directly as a car driver means it’s a negative that needs to be verbosely and emotionally shut down.
Basically yes there will be lots of opinions and emotions. The news article also mentioned that someone felt it was a waste of time for something that was already happening without much consequence.
Coun. Shane Keating said he isn’t sure the motion is worth the trouble.
“Why make something legal that is happening without consequence today?”So basically if I ever get a ticket for not putting my foot on the ground at a stop sign even though I’ve yielded and am basically at a stop already I’ll be forwarding my ticket to Mr. Keating to take care of. Does he think that’s all the legal system is for? Kind of weird.

April 19, 2019 at 1:43 pm in reply to: I think I found a stolen bike on Kijiji – 2007 Norco Atomik #8233This was a few days ago now but I suspect that stolen bike ads that follow this pattern are just out for a quick sale. However I’d report the person and the address to the police along with your suspicions, and they can scout the area out. Generally a bike thief doesn’t just hit once, but will have a stash that they store and sell like a rotating door. If it’s legit you might save someone else from having their bike swiped next.
After a stint of not riding, I carried up the little single speed from it’s basement resting spot, pumped up its bald skinny tires and went out and about the neighbourhood before visiting a polling station.
It kicked my butt. Literally. Shocked how fast it gets away from you. Was on a main street with a ton of mid-afternoon traffic, carrying my ulock on my bars since it was to be a short ride (my holster froze and shattered), and just that little span at 30kmh took my breath away. Looks like I’ll have to dig out the chamois and built those lungs back up! Maybe take up the trombone for a while. Ha.
Ah, watch out for the gravel for sure. Was on a side street with residential parking along both sides and I couldn’t find a great way to let a vehicle behind me pass as the gravel was all the way to the middle of the road. We were going the same way for a number of turns so I finally slowed down and just rode the gravel to give them an opportunity before they got angsty.
That’s interesting insight. It was probably overlooked in the grand scheme of things from the perspective of a culture that is car dominant, and because bicycles are generally much cheaper than the automobile counterpart. But in theory it’s actually an even better idea, because they’re so much more accessible given price point. Take for example some of the 2000-2500k ebikes available — how much more likely would they be taken up by commuters if they were 1500-2000k, or 1000-1500k?
The Giant Quick-E+ from this year looks like a fantastic commuter, for example, and is about 3.5k give or take. That product seems like a great one to subsidize for urban use. It’s at a much lower price point than cars, so it’d be much easier for a government sanctioned route, but maybe they’d get too much flak? Perhaps some sort of local subsidizing route would be easier. Or even under a different name/purpose, such as parks. Taxpayers love parks!
Oof! Surprised it’s freezing when even during the night we’re not below 0… Where is that one at? Image is small to tell.
Gyrospanner, are there photo’s of the Bowmont pond somewhere? That’s an important area to keep an eye on and provide feedback for since it was recently redone. The way the pond affects the pathway at various times of the year is something we should comment on.
Maybe some photos from someone on twitter or strava? Will take a look later.
Ask and ye shall receive! The warm weather is coming!
Awesome photos, thanks for sharing!
Someone get a photo of those signs :O
Yeap, looks like the strip of dirt was in fact a result of the new path being moved to merge with the pedestrian one sooner. The plow just didn’t know that on the first pass. Very nice! Good decision.
They also made an attempt during the chinook to replow the ice off the pathway earlier this week. Got a good bit of it but still a small section along parkdale with ice.
Shouldice was also bladed which is a hugely welcome change. All told this has been a very good year for winter cycling so far (despite the pathway detour/ice hiccup along memorial). Let’s hope the next big snow dump doesn’t come until the ice has melted and then the plowing job nails it. I’m optimistic.
Hm. Spams still not deleted. Ever get that spam blocker added?
Glad the pathway is open but yeah, it’s not in good shape. Not fun going over it in the dark. Was caught off guard by that tiny strip of dirt too.
They did plow the hextall underpass. Which was nice. That or it was someone else again (used to see non-city-workers touching it up). They even gave a go at smashing up the ice. If it was the city who touched up hextall, why not smash up the ice along the north river too? Surely it has a higher traffic use. Maybe 311 is open to that.
Got a lil horn love tap from an old man in a pick up truck. Still amused people think their horns are for their uncontrolled emotions. And that they’re seemingly ok with portraying so openly their insecurity with their own driving skills. He was halfway down the street when I made a left turn. I waved at him from the other lane after completing the turn at the same time he went beep. Gave me a laugh. Yeah man I bet you were scared, you were so close to t-boning me in your imagination I bet. Wouldn’t think twice if he had to completely stop for a pedestrian though. How dare I be in line of vision? So scary. Scarred for life. Seriously no where near me. Why drive if you’re that skittish.
Perfect.
The water folks told me the fences would be down Friday and open for the weekend. Glad to hear that was true.
With the snow falling today parks should be out in the next 24 hours or so clearing the whole thing. Fingers crossed that Monday is a full pathway commute that’s been cleared.Double fingers crossed for the hextall underpass. Can we get some 311s in for that section if it’s not done (again)? The first snowfall the plow literally just went around it on both sides. I realize it was closed for years due to the flood but that is no excuse now that it’s open.
Dang, the fenders on that e-bike! hyuge! Does it say “rad power”? Haha.
I’m ready for some nice new cold autumn* riding again. -
