Got a call from a nice fellow in Water today about the opening of that pathway segment. He left a message saying it should be open Friday, November 30th, and therefore open for the weekend. Here’s to hoping!

I am very done with parkdale after the lack of clearing at the end of 4th ave / along 1st. And particularly the pedestrian ramps, which you’d think would get detailed for accessibility. Alas, I shouldn’t expect such an attention to detail. The pathway will be a welcome reprieve.

edit; as for parkdale itself, here is what I gathered from my ride yesterday.

      – If you followed the dark green line, the road was ploughed and clear.
      – The lime green line was not fully ploughed, but used enough that the pavement was bare and passable.
      – The red line is the pathway and it was not cleared, with foot ridges and ice.
      – The orange line was not cleared, and was snirt, mashed potato and generally not nice (though the houses had shoveled their sidewalks so that was an option).
      – additional option along 29th St of taking the north side homes driveway [on 4th] onto the sidewalk and not having to make the left turn to the bikelane intersection.

Oh no. I didn’t go downtown today because I figured the parkdale detour would suck. 🙁 How was the return route? And has anyone figured out a tolerable winter alternative yet?

Oh. And there was a lot of traffic out there for my ride home last night.

Just kidding, it was peaceful and quiet. I like winter. (I’ll like it more when it’s all on pathways again; hint hint nudge nudge city workers)

I’ve got a new e-bike as well and it’s making such a difference.

Oooh. You know what I’m going to say already, don’t you? Let’s see the new e-bike 😀

Your post never disappeared for me :O I saw it at work the past few days. What sort of browser you using? I wonder if it had a caching error. If it happens again instead of reloading the page normally try reloading it with ctrl+f5 (this forces a cache refresh).

Running and cycling ninjas: actually down in terms of raw count! The first year I was riding I never saw a pedestrian with lights. I’ve seen a lot more this year and it’s awesome. Hopefully it catches on even more.

Crowchild: I hear you. Decided Thursday I’d ride the south side Friday to see how bad it was, but then it snowed. So decided not to since the ice would’ve been hidden. On November 9th it was pretty bad (and ‘officially’ closed, with the gates down and a notice online). The waterfall had frozen slick glace ice over a large portion. Another fellow fell as I was crossing. We had that period of 10 degrees between then and now, but Edworthy is shaded so I really doubt it melted to a usable amount. I have a video I can edit if you’d like but I’m muttering nonsense to myself the whole time. Here’s some pictures instead.

Remember, these were on November 9th. After yesterday’s snowfall I can’t recommend Edworthy, I doubt it’s any good. Especially next week when it pops over freezing again, since it will all ice up.
For me I made peace with the Crowchild detour by popping an earbud into one ear. Last night I went through the entire “Sound of Silence” version from Disturbed waiting for one light cycle.

Bike Calgary: The site was offline and unstable for a really long time. It’ll take time for people to come back to it 🙂 So long as a few people keep posting the others will eventually creep on in. Maybe invite some folks on twitter back over to post their “winter essentials” lists somewhere.

Took the north detour on the way home tonight. Have to say, not impressed. Figured by now it’d be ironed out. The directions actually point you down an alley, across a sidewalk culdesac with no ramp, and down a street without snow clearing. 0/10, F-, beyond mediocre.

I’ve always prefered a solid light both up front and in the rear. But I’ve considered the usefulness of a second blinky. Unfortunately I never got a proper rear mount for my single speed so I’ve had to mount it to my bag. Definitely wouldn’t consider blinking that at people close to eye level.

I haven’t bothered trying the north pathway detour at all. I’ve stuck entirely to edworthy. With the snow now, is the north side worth it? Let’s say you don’t ride at a time where other commuters would be out and about to follow… Got a map for the new route?

Yeah. I saw the post about the “crowchild bridge open” sign being a bait on the old forum too late.
Went in earlier in the week, saw the sign, and assumed the north side of the river was open. How naive of me.
Then I took my fenderless singlespeed with rim brakes through the unploughed edworthy. Needless to say I’ve discovered rimbrakes are never coming out in the winter. Four years of disc brakes being able to stop across ice and snow didn’t prepare me for looking sideways at my rimbrakes causing it to go FLOP immediately. Woops.

One day I might break down and create a guerrilla foldable shovel system to leave all over Calgary so we can ‘illegally’ shovel the unplowed/poorly done pathways and sidewalks. Honestly I’m very surprised they didn’t plow edworthy knowing how popular it became as an alternative to their northside detour. It’s not like that pathway is in good condition to ‘preserve.’

Hope they finish up soon. It’s eye opening every time a major detour like this happens to the pathway system in regards to how much it influences my desire to choose to ride. Just that level of “how annoying is the alternative inconvenience?”
