I biked into work today. conditions were extremely variable. A very thin layer of snow covered whatever was underneath. The Christmas heat has melted most of the snow into ice. Lots of icy patches and some pathways were entirely ice. Very little grippy snow left.
That being said I only had to hike a bike once up an icy incline and didn’t have any wipeouts.
January 9, 2024 at 12:31 pm #121066Much better today. The snow has stuck to the ice and created a higher traction surface.
January 10, 2024 at 2:58 pm #121067Lost a rechargeable hand warmer, blue, about 4 X 9 cm, this morning on the bow river pathway somewhere between Montgomery and downtown. N side of pathway until Crowchild bridge, then S side of pathway. Thank you.
Fairly difficult ride this AM as the sweeper hadn’t yet been out to clear the fresh snow.
January 10, 2024 at 3:34 pm #121068Hopefully they have cleared the pathway on your way home.
Hand warmer… Sounds like a nice piece of kit. I’ve been freezing fingers this winter!
January 29, 2024 at 8:34 pm #121078I’d love to hear if the pathways (Bow River South?) were clear today or have they become icy with the freeze/thaw
February 23, 2025 at 9:42 pm #121549Rode the canal pathway to Chestermere today. The part through Calgary has been plowed this winter and have been in superb shape. The bumpiest sections have been repaved (last year) which makes the pathway for a real nice ride.
There is a short 100-200 m with snow halfway to Chestermere.
March 23, 2025 at 5:07 pm #121555Where is the best place to park to start such a ride? I’m thinking of taking my kid or a friend out on that route. Would be nice to have some options like 40km, 60km, 80km versions. Am coming from far NW Calgary.
April 3, 2025 at 8:50 pm #121556The canal pathway starts near the canoe club off 17 Ave SE. There is parking at the canoe club, or nearby in Inglewood, ride across the bus bridge over Deefoot. The start of the pathway goes under deerfoot and then alongside Inglewood golf club, a part of the City that not many people get to see.
For shorter routes you could start at the Ogden road boat launch ( or slightly further south) and ride across Ogden on 50th Ave bridge to the canal pathway.
You could start at Glenmore and park at the Glenmore Inn. For shorter try 69th Street SE or the Heatherglen golf course.
November 18, 2025 at 10:52 pm #121800With the current weather forecast, watch for icy conditions in the morning. Time for studded tires!
