You can request a bike rack on city owned land (ie. parks) but at malls and privately owned businesses you need to contact the owner. I did this and they did put up 2 bike racks (after they had taken the old rusted ones out and not bothered to replace them) quite quickly. However, they were both in big box malls and they put up one lonely bike rack beside the one store I mentioned at each mall. So the next time I went to either mall and wanted to go to another store on the other end of the mall I would have needed to park where they’d put the bike rack and walk across the parking lot to get to the store I wanted. Needless to say, I chained my bike to a sign in the parking lot. This means that I must contact the owner and present them with a list of every place I want a bike rack. But then, I need to contact every mall in the city or any other shop I may plan on visiting. It really isn’t feasible. Has anyone ever contacted the city about making a bylaw that shop/mall owners must have parking available for bikes? I’m getting frustrated chaining my bike to signs in the middle of parking lots. I feel like there needs to be a better solution. I’d just like to know what people have tried.
