I was annoyed when there was no nearby bike parking at my local 7-Eleven. Convenience stores are generally near where people live and work, so they should be “convenient” to bike to. I emailed a complaint for this particular store. But I was curious as to what the bylaws were. What I found was concerning.

The requirements are a “class 2” stall (outdoor rack/stand) for every 250 square meters of gross usable floor area. This is more than all 7-Eleven locations in Calgary and most convenience stores by a small amount. The average for convenience stores seems to be between 100-220 square meters.

To me, the spirit of the bylaw seems to want there to be 1 bike rack per normal convenience store location, but almost all stores are exempt.

So, how do I go about trying to change this?

Me too! The original body of this post does not seem to have gone through (I read there may be problems with the forum?)

I was going to ask if there was a Calgary bylaw for convenience stores to have bike parking as I had recently gone to a 7-11, which did not have any, and nothing nearby. I looked into it on my own and found that convenience stores need 1 “class 2” bike parking spot for every 250 sq meters of usable floor space.

This particular 7-11 was below the 250 cutoffs judging from google maps. Oddly most convenience stores in Calgary seem to be below the cutoff. I sent an email to my city councillor asking for the cutoff to be lowered, and hopefully, I’ll hear back soon. I’ve also emailed 7-11, so maybe they’ll put one in without the threat of getting handcuffed.
