My wife says I have started to drive like a learner, and honestly she is right, because my Toyota Fortuner has begun to shift with a hard bump between first and second gear, especially in the morning. After ten minutes it calms down a bit, but then in slow traffic it does it again. The car has about a hundred and twenty thousand kilometres, and I live in Sharjah, where it sits in the sun all day and spends a lot of time in stop and go traffic. I went looking for answers and found an Expert guide on why an automatic gearbox shifts roughly, and what I took from it is that old or low fluid, a dirty filter, a weak sensor, worn parts inside or even a software issue can all cause it, so it is not always the end of the gearbox. That helped a little, but my brother says I should just ignore it, and a friend says rough shifting is how gearboxes die slowly. So I want to hear from real owners. How do you tell a small problem from a big one? Does a rough shift only when cold point to something different than a rough shift when hot? Is changing the fluid a safe first step on a gearbox that has never been serviced, or can it make things worse? Should a shop scan for codes before they touch anything? Can driving style or heavy traffic make it worse? Is it safe to keep driving to work for a few weeks? How long does a proper check take, and what should it cost? If your car shifted roughly and you found the cause, please tell me what it was, what you paid, and what you would do differently. Easy answers help me most.
