Presentation to the Standing Policy Committee for Planning and Urban Development

Uncategorized
On the 7th October, Bike Calgary presented a written submission along with an in-person presentation to the committee at City Hall as part of the Committee for Planning and Urban Development. Our speech, supported by the Calgary Climate Hub who also presented, was to highlight to the committee that the 5A Map (Always Available for All Ages and Abilities) should be split into phases and the city should use this to access federal funding to enable the plan to be initiated in 2021. How can you help? Well you can help by writing to your councilor and ask them to not only support the plan to initiate phase 1 but ask them what phase 1 would look like in your Ward. Some councilors voted "no" to the city's overall plan…

Winter Riding? In Calgary………..really? Well yes, you totally can!

Uncategorized
Article by Nigel Swytink-Binnema Some think that riding in the winter is something that requires a huge expenditure, or only for those who have cold blood running through their veins and another bike fitted specifically for the conditions. Commuting or riding a bicycle is an alien concept when our weather shifts into minus territory. Well no, this doesn't have to be the case at all and the perception that your bike has to be hung up on first snow or you need a specific bike, are false. It’s probably a lot easier than you think. Year-round riding in Calgary is actually not only fun at the weekends but very practical to commute to work or even split a journey using the LRT, if you follow some golden rules. Dress for…

#sharedstreets alignment with City’s 5A Network plan

Uncategorized
"What's the 5A Network?" we hear you asking and, "How does this relate to the #sharedstreets campaign and the adaptive roadways (Covid lanes)?" Well, let us explain about the 5A Network and tell you about what we are doing to make cycling safer and more accessible for all Calgarians. Rest assured that we've not deviated in our efforts to retain the adaptive roadways. We realize that some of them replace missing infrastructure or address existing pathways that are insufficient for the volume of users. They need to be retained to bridge this gap. They will be used in winter as Calgarians don't hibernate until the thaw (see our upcoming blog about winter riding, counter to the views of the NY Times) and we need these spaces more than ever! But…

City’s proposed residential speed limits reduction

Uncategorized
City officials are set to meet this coming week on a review of the city's residential speed limits, with three scenario's being proposed; Scenario 1 - Residential Streets and Collector Roads reduced to 30km/h Scenario 2 - Residential Streets to 30km/h, Collector Roads to 50km/h Scenario 3 - Residential and Collector Roads to 40km/h The city advises that about 25 per cent of motor vehicle collisions happen within neighborhoods each year, with about 5.5 per cent resulting in serious injury or death. The societal cost for traffic accidents in the city is estimated at more than $1.2 billion dollars a year. The city has provided a calculation tool for you to understand the impacts of these changes. We put in a journey from the North West to the South East…

Our mobility by the numbers…Pathway Stats!

Did you know that you can view the City's embedded pathway counters online? Ever wondered what these things are? Well there are 29 counters embedded within the multi-use pathways around our city and you can view them online here. So what does it tell us? Well filtering out cars (not sure how they would measure on the devices, but lets humor ourselves there), and take the last 30 days as an average. Remember that side by side riding and walking is probably picked up only once and there is probably a factor missed by nature of the device, but they are stated to be 97% accurate. The City's detectors, with one additional locations not shown, on Wetlands Trail in Copperfield Peace Bridge has a peak of nearly 12,000 counts on…

#SharedStreets – Open Letter to the Mayor and Councillors

Uncategorized
As part of our ongoing #SharedStreets campaign, Bike Calgary has issued the following letter to the elected officials of the City of Calgary. As well as providing some relevant data, some of which is provided by the City itself, we are asking for a pause in releasing back the adaptive roadways and to engage with stakeholder groups to work together and focus in the right areas, where we can help our local businesses recover and generate community income by change as well as providing safe usable cycling spaces. What can you do? Write to your local member of Council in support of this letter. Contact your Ward community representative to ask how they view the pause and retention of the Shared Streets. As a business, especially local shops, bars, restaurants…
