Tell City Council You Want Funding for Active Transportation

This month the City of Calgary is going through their annual budget adjustments. While that might not sound like the most thrilling event, a big show of support from Bike Calgary members could mean big improvements to Calgary’s bike lane and bike path network! Budget adjustments are where the City chooses which projects should receive funding for the next year (and beyond). The public gets to provide their input on which projects we care about the most. This year, the city is considering a 46 million dollar investment in the bike path network, with more in the future.  We are asking you, Bike Calgary members, to come join us and tell City Council how important this is to you! Calgary's 2023-2026 proposed budget has been released and it has very little funding for supporting active transportation. For more information, please check out our previous post. The good thing is the budget has not been approved and there is still time to change it. There are councillors that support active transportation and that want you to speak out. Bike Calgary’s Response to the 2023-2026 Budget

The City of Calgary's proposed 2023-2026 budget allocates just $1.4 million to building active modes of infrastructure. This is less than 0.5% of the total Streets budget and is less than what it would cost to build the few blocks of the 7th Street Cycle tracks today. Read Project Calgary's excellent breakdown of the Streets budget here. Bike Calgary's letter to city council and administration addressing the lack of active transportation funding is below. We encourage everyone to speak or submit a written submission about why they support active transportation on Nov 22, when Council will be hearing public submissions. Ride for Veterans 2021

Ride for Veterans 2021

Following last years pilot ride, Tegh Singh (SGT Jesse Jones) and Pete Spearing are cycling again to commemorate our veterans and to raise funds for the Veterans Transition Network. The 35km route will contain Calgary’s military monuments and buildings on the 11th November, making a video blog at each point. The ride is raising funds through donations of support, with all the proceeds going to the Veterans Transition Network. You can donate through the GoFundme page here (where you can also get a tax receipt). Tegh Singh (SGT. Jesse Jones) is originally from Southern California. He enlisted in the US Army at age 18 and served for over 6 years as a Fire Support Specialist. Effective today, Bike Calgary is adapting to changing preferences in active transportation, and rebranding itself as "Scooter Calgary". "We have always supported active transportation in every form, and with the data from last year around the overwhelming enthusiasm for scooters, we have recognized we need to change with the times," explains Scooter Calgary president Gary Millard. "Thankfully, all the great work we have done on the multi-use pathways and network of downtown scooter tracks is still relevant to this growing mode of transportation." A group of local cycling advocates, namely Kevin Schlauch*, Lindsay Bliek*, Becca Cleaver Burke, Jessy Rajan, and Kourtney Brangan have started a petition to get the City to extend the 5 St SW cycle track south beyond 17 Ave SW. The petition is available to be signed at several businesses in the Beltline area.
