We've had a few inquiries lately about bike theft prevention and how to go about reporting a lost or stolen bike. The following information and more can be found in the FAQ's section of our website. While bicycle theft numbers are down in Calgary, there were still over 3600 reported bike thefts in 2017. Here’s a nice simple list to follow to help prevent bike theft, as well as how to report a theft. For more details on locking your bike, see below. Lock your bike properly by securing the wheels and the bike frame to something solid. Do this even if you are using secured bike parking.Use multiple locks.Take easily removable items with you (bells, seats, lights).Don’t leave your bike locked in an easily accessible place for long periods…

Like it or not, we cyclists tend to get painted with the same brush, so it behooves all of us to remain courteous on the pathways, cycle tracks, and roadways. As ridership numbers continue to increase in Calgary, year-round, more and more drivers, pedestrians, and other cyclists are encountering bike riders. I like to think that Bike Calgary members are the most courteous riders out there, so there is decent chance that this post won’t reach the people it should, but I’m going to try to get this message out anyway. Feel free to share this message (politely) with other cyclist. Support the making of a cycling documentary – “Undeniably Young”

Check out this animated documentary being made called UNDENIABLY YOUNG, about NORA YOUNG (1917-2016), one of Canada’s most important early female cycling pioneers. The film makers are looking to crowd fund this film. Nora was a top competitive cyclist in Canada in the 1930s, at a time where women were just starting to cycle. She opened doors for every female cyclist to come after her, for which she was recently inducted to the Canadian Cycling Hall of Fame. She also was a women’s cycling advocate, cycled for recreation and transportation throughout her life, and kept riding right until her late 80s! Lawrence Hong Advocacy Award Lawrence was a tireless advocate for all modes of transportation, and volunteered with Calgary Car Share, Arusha Open Streets, Bike Calgary, Cyclepalooza and countless others.
