Went again this morning. There was no more snow on the road all the way to the top and as far as I could see down the south side. Just a very small amount of (1 cm deep) slush in a few places, easily avoidable. Outhouse was open at the summit parking lot too.
Went up on Saturday morning from the north side. There was about 30 cm of snow/slush on the road, roughly 300 m from the summit. It’s probably doable right to the summit by now.
Also… any intel on Nosecreek? Any ice between say the Zoo and Beddington? What about between Beddington and Edgemont area?
Forgot to comment. Rode Nose Creek from the Zoo to Beddington/Country Hills on Friday. No sign of snow or ice at all. Unlikely that there’s ice anywhere on that side of town.
Bailed on WBTWD 🙁 I was looking forward to it, but the unkempt state of the roads this morning would have made for an extremely dangerous ride in. I knew I made the right decision when I saw a car that had slammed into the median on the exit from 10 st to SAIT and subsequently broken its axle. That person would have skidded right across the bike lane. Man, I wish there was a feasible pathway route from my area of town!
Next week is looking pretty good for biking once they get the snow cleaned up…
RichieRich, thankfully that wasn’t me blowing past you… I didn’t see any other cyclists on Monday and I spend very little time on the Memorial pathway…
The e-bike does keep me warm. You still have to do a fair amount of work, especially when it’s cold out. The drivetrain is still frozen like a regular bike, and the motor simply can’t overcome all of that. On Monday I was sweating quite a bit by the time I got to the top of the hill on 14 St by the winter club. I also find that the only time I go faster is up hills and into the wind; my total journey time is roughly the same because I can’t pedal fast enough on flats or downhill…
I think that e-bikes will be a gamechanger in terms of commuting over the next few years. I’ve already put 1700 km on mine since July, ONLY riding on days when I would have otherwise taken the car. I still ride my regular bikes whenever feasible.
Great idea, Gary; how can I nominate them (the property management company)? As far as I can tell on the website, there is a form for nominations that is coming soon…
It was -34 at my home weather station this morning and didn’t warm up to -30 until after 9 am… didn’t bike today as I had to stay at home for an appointment. Hopefully it’s a bit warmer tomorrow, my e-bike was not that happy with the cold temps yesterday.
Here are a few photos I took when it was brand new in spring 2017:
In addition to space for well over a hundred bikes, there is a full size wash bay with hot/cold water taps, and a detergent system if desired. There is also a work area with tools and a smaller wash bay for washing parts, wheels, etc.
First real winter day on the e-bike today. It did reasonably well but I brought my battery charger to work and I’m glad I did as the battery was already below 30% when I got in, notwithstanding a test ride I did yesterday to see how many layers I would need. Normally I can do 2 full round trips to the office on one charge.
I wonder how much salt one has to throw down on the road to make it liquid at -27. The 10 St cycle track south of 16 Ave, and all of the streets downtown were disgusting. Glad I could give my bike a hot splash in our excellent bike facility at work.
Lots of surprisingly bare and dry pathways this morning, except Egerts Park which was about 50% shiny ice due to melt/freeze running across the path… and the south end of the Peace Bridge was a disgrace. The whole triangle was basically a skating rink (I put in a 311 call about this).
This has been the earliest in the calendar I have been able to ride my summer bike from home with my normal route completely free of snow and ice. I hope it stays that way!
BTW, anyone notice that the Lime bikes have bar mitts on them now ? Good for them!
The fenders are indeed big and I love it!
The brand is Rad Power Bikes. Excellent value…
This evening was my last ride of November, as I have to take the car tomorrow. See you guys in December!
Took the long way home from Eau Claire around the Zoo and up Nose Creek to Kincora… Definitely wouldn’t have done that without the e-Bike!
Well put! I’ve got a new e-bike as well and it’s making such a difference. I’m enjoying not being a limp dishrag all the time. (Health issue took me off my bike a couple of years ago, after a decade of year-round commuting)
I have a Schwalbe Marathon Winter 29 x 2.0″ on my front wheel, and I am really happy with the handling, even in the sloppy conditions this morning. The sheer weight of the e-bike, as well as its long wheelbase and low center of mass (mid mount Bosch drive) keep it very stable. I slid out a couple of times last night in the fresh snow, but actually less than when I was running 2 studded tires on a mid 80s mountain bike.
Have you been out in the snow yet?
Today was my first day out in any snow. I’ve got Schwalbe Marathon Winter 26 x 1.75 on both wheels, I think I could do with something fatter once these wear out. The snirt on side streets was pretty unpleasant but I was very pleased to see that pathway and even sidewalk-pathways had been extensively cleared in my boonie neck of the woods. A huge improvement over previous winters.
The 10 St NW bike lane from 14 St all the way in was about 40% mess from parked cars and buses, but overall the ride in was pretty nice. Another winning day for the e-bike.
