Here’s what I posted on some link on FB: the Fuzz only focus on cyclists. Never runners, bladers, scooters, walkers, dogs, wanderers, roller skiis, those un/plugged and clueless, those on the wrong path (when divided is provided), or little kids meandering about at the peak of rush hour whilst their clueless parent(s) don’t consider risks to everyone.
Actually myself and quite a few of the folks on a road riding club think the Stoney reroute under the Bow near Tuscany was rather poorly done. literally quadrupled (probably more) the length of path that was there before. Oddly done. In any case it’s open and being used and for that I’m thankful.
Tuesday I passed someone still on studded tires. Isn’t the general rule that it only snows on May long weekend campers?
Dagnabbit I missed the big breakfast!!?? aaaaw man! hey but at least I caught the north side of Peace Bridge handouts of oranges, bars, and Honey Stingers!! hmmmmm lots of friendly volunteers and people stopping by at the relatively late hour of 750am’ish. Very much appreciated.
Even had a few words of appreciation for my ride (and confusion why I’d commute on it)… it’s a Ti frame.
Great job Team Bike Calgary!
oh Gosh Cindy… Crowchild MUP has been open since mid-winter. In pretty good condition regardless of whether you’re approaching from north or south sides.
OH OH the “seasonal riders” are coming out with their noisy bikes and clueless riding. Oh them and the Zwifters who attempt time trial/intervals riding through busy areas.
Yep Quarry Road trail didn’t have any moisture on it now… some tackier areas but nothing sticking. So nice and fast on the way up.
Also noticing a lot more bikers on the paths, more bikes in the racks, and a lot more dazed-and-confuzzed riders out there, and also pedestrians both of whom wonder around like lost sheep in every lane and direction. Sigh…. We all know 20km/hr is the “speed limit” however just a note to keep it slow in the slow areas like Eau Claire, areas with less visibility, areas with gravel, and high risk locations. Another riding buddy said he saw some of the MUP “police” handing out “awards”. Of course to cyclists only.
If it snows blame me… I traded in my studded tires for the ‘cross wheelset yesterday. So nice… quiet… easier to spin up and hold speed too. Gotta wonder how long until some of this gravel is swept up – sure has copious amounts in some areas. Was also wondering about Quarry Park… don’t want to dirty my freshly cleaned shiny commuter.
Also… any intel on Nosecreek? Any ice between say the Zoo and Beddington? What about between Beddington and Edgemont area? Thinking I need to start adding some km’s and fitness build by way of a longer commute home.
Lastly… already more folks on the paths, many without lights. Am thinking it’s still too early to be putting about the lights.
Another comment about the Sien Lok Park that Gyrospanner mentioned above… gotta say that the new lights are really great in terms of being able to safely cross and not feel like I’m running the gauntlet. Only problem is they didn’t align the path with the crossing very well in terms of cyclists… but it is somewhat manageable. I just hope they fix that 25meter stretch of sidewalk to the west to make it work better.
Moreso I’m concerned about this summers pathway closures near and around downtown, north and south sides. Seems to be a new interactive type of map here: http://www.calgary.ca/CSPS/Parks/Pages/Pathways/Pathway-closures.aspx
Summer tires?? you’re tempting fate just talking about it!!
I’ve gone as late as end April with the studded tires… and often felt like a fool EXCEPT for those inevitable hard freeze, frost, snow, meltwater days…. but gotta admit, it’s surprisingly dry out there right now.Hey Gyro that might give me the mental boost I need… but I also need the physical recovery. On the positive side buying a new bike always makes me feel good. Other than the wife asking (again) if I’ve grown another butt, since I only have 1 butt why so many bikes?
Anyone out there able to give advice on having a cycling addiction issue (ok extremely frequent bike commuter regardless of weather) AND trying to recover from Mono? Just got diagnosed after a few weeks of feeling like crap. Need some encouragement here… thanks.
The ice cometh?? On this evenings commute home… balmy temps I may add… my impression heading from downtown westward was that in many places the snow is converting to ice, or possibly just sublimating revealing the ice that was there before. This could end up sketchy as we slowly warm back up.
Speaking of ebike…yesterday I had some dude on his ebike come past me quite briskly as I slogged away with my frozen drive train that felt like I was going uphill through mush. Rather than be annoyed I must admit to some envy* but I also wondered… if the bike is doing that much work plus with that much wind chill, does the rider still generate enough heat to stay warm?
* – the rider seemed to be riding in a responsible manner and although could have provided more notice when passing it wasn’t that unusual. Not to mention they were about 1 of 8 riders I saw during my 10km commute so hardly an issue with being a traffic jam, unlike the bumper to bumper Memorial Drive traffic.
I would agree with you too. An excellent resource.
The coldest weather I’ve ridden in this year is -15’ish… this -30C suddenly has me doubting my layers and trying to figure it out again. -
