#sharedstreets alignment with City’s 5A Network plan

"What's the 5A Network?" we hear you asking and, "How does this relate to the #sharedstreets campaign and the adaptive roadways (Covid lanes)?" Well, let us explain about the 5A Network and tell you about what we are doing to make cycling safer and more accessible for all Calgarians. Rest assured that we've not deviated in our efforts to retain the adaptive roadways. We realize that some of them replace missing infrastructure or address existing pathways that are insufficient for the volume of users. They need to be retained to bridge this gap. City’s proposed residential speed limits reduction

City officials are set to meet this coming week on a review of the city's residential speed limits, with three scenario's being proposed; Scenario 1 - Residential Streets and Collector Roads reduced to 30km/h Scenario 2 - Residential Streets to 30km/h, Collector Roads to 50km/h Scenario 3 - Residential and Collector Roads to 40km/h The city advises that about 25 per cent of motor vehicle collisions happen within neighborhoods each year, with about 5.5 per cent resulting in serious injury or death. The societal cost for traffic accidents in the city is estimated at more than $1.2 billion dollars a year. The city has provided a calculation tool for you to understand the impacts of these changes. Our mobility by the numbers…Pathway Stats!

Did you know that you can view the City's embedded pathway counters online? Ever wondered what these things are? Well there are 29 counters embedded within the multi-use pathways around our city and you can view them online here. So what does it tell us? Well filtering out cars (not sure how they would measure on the devices, but lets humor ourselves there), and take the last 30 days as an average. Remember that side by side riding and walking is probably picked up only once and there is probably a factor missed by nature of the device, but they are stated to be 97% accurate. The City's detectors, with one additional locations not shown, on Wetlands Trail in Copperfield Peace Bridge has a peak of nearly 12,000 counts on…

Bike Calgary welcomes TCR Sport Lab to its membership scheme!

Bike Calgary welcomes TCR Sport Lab as a new members to our Friends of Bike Calgary scheme. Based on 10th Ave SW, the team at TCR are able to help you on training, provide assessments, coaching and classes as well as being a bike supplier and service center. TCR is a locally owned and operated business for the last 15 years starting in 2006. They have steadily grown as company expanding their fitness and bike services with each new location. In 2015, they moved to Sunalta from Kensington with a new space offering more fitness services and bikes. Today, TCR is a fully equipped bike shop servicing Road, Gravel, Triathlon and Mountain bikes. They also have Canada's only Altitude chamber for people to improve their fitness as well as metabolism. …

Attention Bike Calgary members and YYC cyclists. Are you ready for your 5 minutes of fame? The City of Calgary is coordinating a video and photo shoot for the Eau Claire improvement program on Wednesday, September 23 from 10 am to 12 pm. They are looking for our help to have cyclists of all descriptions to participate to help show the importance of separated speeds for people travelling through the Eau Claire area. It would be great to see cargo bikes and adapted bikes there, along with commute and recreational bikes too, if you can spare the time. Ward Lead and Ward Representative Openings

Volunteering

Ward representatives are Bike Calgary’s vital links to Calgary’s communities. They serve as points of contact for cyclists in Calgary’s neighborhoods, and also alert the Bike Calgary’s Task groups and Board of Directors to cycling-related issues in their areas. Ward reps can also be Bike Calgary’s representatives at organization such as large employers or one of Calgary’s colleges or universities. This role represents the heart of the community, with passion and local knowledge about the issue both daily and in planning for events, community associations and local business. The Ward Representatives are supported by the Bike Calgary Task Groups and the Board, providing advocacy, support, resource and connections to councilors to highlight and help resolve issues, and to improve cycling in Calgary’s communities. Lime Partners with Bike Calgary to Create Safer Streets

#SharedStreets – Open Letter to the Mayor and Councillors

As part of our ongoing #SharedStreets campaign, Bike Calgary has issued the following letter to the elected officials of the City of Calgary. As well as providing some relevant data, some of which is provided by the City itself, we are asking for a pause in releasing back the adaptive roadways and to engage with stakeholder groups to work together and focus in the right areas, where we can help our local businesses recover and generate community income by change as well as providing safe usable cycling spaces.
