Starting on April 1st, the City of Calgary will be working on the Sunnyside Flood Barrier project. From April 1st - April 20th, there will be various closures of portions of the bike/shared path on the north side of the Bow River between Centre Street and 10th Street NW as the city collects data with respect to groundwater, ground conditions, and the current condition of the existing barriers. Bike Calgary is working to set up consistent, ongoing funding so that we can afford to complete more advocacy work and education for cyclists in Calgary. Ultimately, we’d like sufficient ongoing, reliable funding so that we can hire a part-time Executive Director to really represent Calgary’s cycling community. We have two volunteer activities to help us reach this goal - one or two people to coordinate our annual fund raising event and YYC Bike Awards for September 2019, and a few volunteers to help with our corporate donations work including organizing advertising for our sponsors. We've had a few inquiries lately about bike theft prevention and how to go about reporting a lost or stolen bike. The following information and more can be found in the FAQ's section of our website. While bicycle theft numbers are down in Calgary, there were still over 3600 reported bike thefts in 2017. Here’s a nice simple list to follow to help prevent bike theft, as well as how to report a theft. For more details on locking your bike, see below. Like it or not, we cyclists tend to get painted with the same brush, so it behooves all of us to remain courteous on the pathways, cycle tracks, and roadways. As ridership numbers continue to increase in Calgary, year-round, more and more drivers, pedestrians, and other cyclists are encountering bike riders. I like to think that Bike Calgary members are the most courteous riders out there, so there is decent chance that this post won’t reach the people it should, but I’m going to try to get this message out anyway. Feel free to share this message (politely) with other cyclist. Please remember your fellow road and pathway users when you are out and about, and take a few small steps to make their experience with you a little nicer.…
