And Another Interesting Article:
Well, seems like I’ve learned to live with them. Some observations – 1) I haven’t had to deal with any jackasses since that incident, 2) I’ve followed some and it seems that their top speed is more like 25 kmh, and 3) most of my non-cyclist friends REALLY REALLY hate them, especially when they have to deal with them on the sidewalk!

If you remember the Hextall bridge being used, you probably remember the old Shouldice house on the hill by the east entrance to Bowmont? That was my uncle’s uncle’s house, but I always get a creepy feeling when I ride by that spot knowing that it served as a crematorium for years……
The parking lot by that spot will be closed tomorrow for some event, but I can’t find anything on google?
About that ANNOYING gravel detour –
It is ANNOYING, just like when the Flames got knocked out of the playoffs IN THE FIRST ROUND, and the Raptors lost Game 5 BY A SINGLE POINT, ANNND just as annoying as that little muddy spot on the pathway on the south side of the river that I now have to deal with ‘cuz that gravel detour is DUMB!
RANT OFF! But BTW, does anybody know the name of that bridge over the river in Edworthy just west of the detour?
Maybe the intent is to push commuters back onto the roads. That would be OK if the cycle track network was expanded accordingly AND properly cleared in the winter.
Never thought I’d NEVER, EVER be contemplating putting a radar detector on my bike! My handlebars are pretty full with a computer, iPhone mount, 2 headlights and a bell. Not to mention that by bike doesn’t have a 12V power supply! But FYI, you can buy one at Visions for $70-$80 on sale right now.

Sean Chu, Joe Magliocca and Shane Keating voted against this, Magliocca even brought up the old threat of bike licensing (reeeeally?).
So, going forward, it looks like the City will be working with the Province to change the laws as required. I hope they can move this forward. Somewhere there’s probably a joke to be made here about the “slow wheels of progress…”
About the traffic control issue – I don’t really think it is an issue. The bike lane is segregated and I wouldn’t really care if a car is going 45 or 50 kmhr anyways. If they really wanted to slow things down, they could put some 40 kmhr zones in …..
What about 11th Ave? I don’t think they ever put any traffic calming in place there?
Yeah, I rode through there last night and it was all clean of ice, but there was still quite a few muddy spots…..
Probably one of the most unsuccessful bike lane installations is getting the fix it needs! Good Job since it is in the top 5 for amount of use. I drive the length of it when I go watch Flames games and the stupid little jog in the lanes is really annoying. Now they promise 3 lanes of uninterrupted traffic. The pumphouse pathway connection is pretty sweet as well! Double Good Job!
I think the only time CP goes in there is to maintain the integrity of the rip-rap along the river or clear out the culvert with the prime concern being “Keep the rolling stock on the tracks and outta’ the river.” [Especially those cars full of oil!!] IMO, nobody has really completed a satisfactory amount of repair since the last time they ripped up the path with a bunch of tracked vehicles and the teeth off a heavy loader. I often wonder what type of agreement they have with the City for access to sections like that?
I rode through there last week and there was just over 100 feet of “slush on the pack-ice” in the usual spot. Just barely rideable, lots of upper body workout keeping the bike going straight, but no mini crevasses to jump or otherwise deal with. I doubt that it would even get any attention from the City because it should be cleared by itself by now due to the (slightly) warmer weather we’ve been having. Still expect water, however!
