Advocacy, Infrastructure
Survey Link: https://engage.calgary.ca/stephenavenue The City of Calgary is looking for your input on the Stephen Avenue corridor, which includes 8 Ave South from Olympic Plaza (Macleod Trail SE) to the Mewata Armoury (11 St. SW). 8 Ave South is one of the most well-used cycling routes in the downtown core, and is also a popular destination for both Calgarians and visitors. This project is a great opportunity to improve the experience of people who bike and walk, and could include extending the shared space/vehicle free area further west, towards 11 St. SW. Show Your Support For the 42 Avenue SE Complete Streets Project

Advocacy, Infrastructure
The City has just finished gathering input to improve accessibility and connectivity along 42 Avenue S.E. for people who bike, walk and take transit. For cyclists, the project should greatly improve what currently is a classic "black-hole" in cycling infrastructure. Now we need to make sure this project goes ahead. For people that are not familiar with the area, the 42 Avenue SE corridor is probably the only logical east-west connection between the Inglewood area and Heritage drive.  The road is an old-fashioned car-truck oriented design that is not inviting to ride on.  Having said that, it has the potential to from excellent connections between areas like Stanley Park, Mission Road SW and the Mission area, Spiller Road SE/Stampede Park, the cycling infrastructure on 11 Street SE, the Bow River pathway system…

12 Ave SW Improvements

12 Ave SW Improvements

Advocacy, Infrastructure
The City of Calgary is planning to make some improvements of 12 Ave SW over this and next summer. By the end of summer 2019 we'll see the extension of the 12 Ave cycle track to 16 St SW. In 2020, the cycle track will be extended further West to 19 St SW and the Bow River pathway. More information can be found on the city's site: https://calgary.ca/12ave Summer 2019 cycle track extension to 16 St SW Summer 2020 cycle track extension to Bow River Pathway The rest of the project is a little less exciting for people who primarily bike in the area, but will see the elimination of the infamous "lane jog" for cars on 12 Ave SW. This means the route will provide two vehicle lanes that…

Bike Calgary’s letter to the City re: 2019-2022 Budget

Bike Calgary’s letter to the City re: 2019-2022 Budget

Advocacy, Infrastructure
Bike Calgary has just submitted its letter to the City of Calgary in regards to budget deliberations. The new budget includes amounts for Complete Streets and Main Streets, which both include considerations for cycling infrastructure. The budget is not specific as to the amount of those bigger buckets that will go specifically to cycling, so we wanted to make sure our Councillors and Mayor understood the value of improved cycling infrastructure in the city, and encourage them to specify amounts to support this. Click here to see the copy of our letter. And it's not too late for you to contact your Councillor to remind them of the importance of supporting cycling and providing adequate funding!

Provide feedback on Calgary’s cycling infrastructure

Provide feedback on Calgary’s cycling infrastructure

Infrastructure
One of the challenges that cities face in planning and developing cycling infrastructure is knowing about current best practices, what other cities are spending on infrastructure, and what sort of increase in cycling can be expected for certain investments. To help provide this sort of information to city planners, Places For Bikes is gathering information about what is being done in various cities and how cyclists respond to those improvements and ranking participating cities. Places For Bikes gathers different types of information (e.g. amount of different types of infrastructure in each city, official mode share surveys in each city), and one type of information they want is feedback from cyclists across North America (“Community Survey”). Please take a few minutes to complete the Place For Bikes Community Survey. You will…

2nd St SW Complete Street Engagement Opportunities

Advocacy, Infrastructure
The City of Calgary is seeking feedback on a proposed complete street (including cycle track!) along 2nd St SW through Mission and the Beltline. Now is the time to get involved and let the City know what you think! The Project Initially, the City had planned a painted bike lane along 2nd St, but thanks to feedback received, the City went back to the drawing board and created this updated plan for a physically separated cycle track on 2nd St all the way from the Elbow River to 10th Ave SW. This change in design means the project will create a critical All Ages & Abilities cycling link through this important area. The plan includes a poured concrete barrier, dashed green pavement at potential conflict zones, bicycle signals at signalized…
