Calgary's 2023-2026 proposed budget has been released and it has very little funding for supporting active transportation. For more information, please check out our previous post. The good thing is the budget has not been approved and there is still time to change it. There are councillors that support active transportation and that want you to speak out. Bike Calgary’s Response to the 2023-2026 Budget

The City of Calgary's proposed 2023-2026 budget allocates just $1.4 million to building active modes of infrastructure. This is less than 0.5% of the total Streets budget and is less than what it would cost to build the few blocks of the 7th Street Cycle tracks today. Read Project Calgary's excellent breakdown of the Streets budget here. Bike Calgary's letter to city council and administration addressing the lack of active transportation funding is below. We encourage everyone to speak or submit a written submission about why they support active transportation on Nov 22, when Council will be hearing public submissions. Bike Calgary is pleased to announce the re-election of Molli Bennett (President) to the Board of Directors, and to welcome three new board members: Volker Mendritzki, Brad Randall, and Leithan Slade. Molli’s continued leadership, and the addition of three new members to an expanded board, creates an incredible opportunity for Bike Calgary to build on its past work and grow in new directions. The 2022 Annual General Meeting saw members vote to increase the number of directors from seven to nine. This grew out of the need for Bike Calgary to have more consistent operational support. On December 20, the City of Calgary announced that the Alberta Ability Network and Bike Calgary were the recipients of the City’s Transportation Opportunities Award. The award recognized Alberta Ability Network and Bike Calgary’s “Safe and Accessible Pathways” initiative. Here is a video that the City put together interviewing the award recipients.
