Bike Calgary’s Response to the 2023-2026 Budget

Uncategorized
The City of Calgary's proposed 2023-2026 budget allocates just $1.4 million to building active modes of infrastructure. This is less than 0.5% of the total Streets budget and is less than what it would cost to build the few blocks of the 7th Street Cycle tracks today. Read Project Calgary's excellent breakdown of the Streets budget here. Bike Calgary's letter to city council and administration addressing the lack of active transportation funding is below. We encourage everyone to speak or submit a written submission about why they support active transportation on Nov 22, when Council will be hearing public submissions. We also support Calgary Climate Hub in asking the City of Calgary to commit to funding at least 100km of the Always Available for All Ages and Abilities (5A) network…

New Board Directors

Uncategorized
Bike Calgary is pleased to announce the re-election of Molli Bennett (President) to the Board of Directors, and to welcome three new board members: Volker Mendritzki, Brad Randall, and Leithan Slade. Molli’s continued leadership, and the addition of three new members to an expanded board, creates an incredible opportunity for Bike Calgary to build on its past work and grow in new directions. The 2022 Annual General Meeting saw members vote to increase the number of directors from seven to nine. This grew out of the need for Bike Calgary to have more consistent operational support. You can read all about the new board members here. Here are a few highlights on our new and re-elected members: Molli Bennett (she/her) is a lifelong Calgarian, year-round bike rider, and bicycle-focused educator…

Kensington Area Improvements Online Engagement

The final phase of public engagement is now open for the Kensington Area Improvements project located in the northwest communities of West Hillhurst and Hillhurst/Sunnyside. Check out the design concepts and fill out your feedback here: https://engage.calgary.ca/kensingtonarea Active transportation users will be particularly interested in the first three projects on the website: 19 Street NW between 5 Avenue and Kensington Road NW: Separated on-street wheeling lanes on each side of the roadway, which also provides better separation for sidewalk users from the roadway lanes. The improvements include raised islands and curb extensions to shorten the crossing distance for pedestrians and to improve their visibility to drivers. Advocacy, Infrastructure, Uncategorized
As 2021 comes to a close, we want to reflect on some of the progress that has been made in Calgary towards safer and more convenient cycling routes. This will be somewhat of a longer blog post, so here is a brief outline: Policy and/or administrative changes implemented in the past yearAdaptive Roadways programMulti-use pathway / Off-street pathway projectsProtected Wheeling LanesLooking ahead to 2022 POLICY CHANGES One of City Council's most impactful actions towards safer active transportation in 2021 was the adoption of 40 km/h residential speed limits, for all residential streets (streets with no painted centreline), and some collector streets (busier neighbourhood streets, often with bus routes).
