Update on Alberta Bike Swap 2020

Uncategorized
We've just received an update from the organizers of the Alberta Bike Swap events. Here is their media release with the latest information. Alberta Bike Swap 2020 Hey Alberta! Bike Swap is NOT GOING AWAY, we’re just postponing our events until it’s safe to gather again for bikey goodness.  Calgary Bike Swap would have been May 2 at City Centre Parkade, Edmonton Bike Swap would have been May 9, and Lethbridge Bike Swap would have been April 25 at Exhibition Hall.  We have over 50 conversations a day about where to buy, sell, or donate a bike, and we know that everyone will miss the bike swaps this Spring.   Most of our conversations are when our events are happening and where to buy a good used bike.  First answer; we…

Cyclists support for Social Distancing

Uncategorized
As part of our public and civil duty we are all to adhere to the current requirements and recommendations of the Governments and their agents. Not following these actually put you, your loved ones and those in the communities risk. Social distancing is a required to reduce the risk of spreading the virus to others. But for the cyclists of Calgary what does that mean? Firstly well done to the City of Calgary for widening certain recognized popular routes by shutting down vehicle lanes and deliberately not publishing them as this will just attract more people. This really helps but remember that its not the intent to allow more cyclist to use these routes, just to help those whom need to use them maintain social distancing. Some Provinces have issued…

Bike Calgary changing to “Scooter Calgary”

Bike Calgary changing to “Scooter Calgary”

Uncategorized
Effective today, Bike Calgary is adapting to changing preferences in active transportation, and rebranding itself as "Scooter Calgary". "We have always supported active transportation in every form, and with the data from last year around the overwhelming enthusiasm for scooters, we have recognized we need to change with the times," explains Scooter Calgary president Gary Millard. "Thankfully, all the great work we have done on the multi-use pathways and network of downtown scooter tracks is still relevant to this growing mode of transportation." Scooter Calgary will continue to advocate with the City of Calgary for safe and effective infrastructure for all active transportation users. And yes, we still support cyclists, even as they become the marginal users of our wonderful network of scootering infrastructure. Please consider volunteering for Scooter Calgary…

Bike Calgary Ward and Community Reps Volunteer Orientation – March 21st

Uncategorized
Ward reps are Bike Calgary’s vital links to Calgary’s communities. They serve as points of contact for cyclists in Calgary’s neighborhoods, and alert the Bike Calgary’s Board of Directors or Infrastructure Task Group to cycling-related issues in their areas. Ward and community reps can also be Bike Calgary’s representatives at organization such as large employers or one of Calgary’s colleges or universities. They work with the Board, the city, community associations, and councillors to resolve issues and to improve cycling in Calgary’s communities. Is your community a gold mine of bike infrastructure but you aren't sure how to let your neighbours know? Are you struggling to bike because there is a lack of bike options? Does your community have a Bike Calgary representative? If this sounds like the volunteer opportunity…

WHAT’S IN A CALGARY CYCLIST’S CHRISTMAS STOCKING?

Uncategorized
What do Calgary’s cyclists really need for Christmas? Most people will get the usual pair of socks (cyclist related of course!) or sometimes the persistent hint appears under the tree, but is there something the Calgary cyclist actually needs to endure the cycling season in our beautiful City? We’ve all flicked through the glossy magazines and seen all those nice to have items screaming out to make it on your Christmas list, but the Calgary cyclist endures more…….the cold! So is there a real problem we can't really solve? OK so the Summer months we can discount and that’s debatable as to even when that will actually appear, but for the rest of the year our altitude and wonderful climate brings a 6 am chill, which even to the hardiest…
